My dad is letting me use some of my savings bonds to get a new comp for IMSA. The thing is though, I want to build my own, but I don't know too much about parts.

I want it to be around 2k, so that I can have 1k left to upgrade to next generation stuff (DX10/Core 2 Duo/AM2)

Newly manufactured versions of this motherboard supports Core 2 Duo.

Finally, is it possible to have this case in it? :D

wtf??? $645.00 for case with lcd screen???

i wouldnt buy that, unless u are using it for a special purpose.

i would go for a AMD mobo and cpu.

If you cashing out your family's precious savings bond, why in the hell (For crying out loud) would you spend it for piece of crap like that?

If you gaming on this;

Mobos you got: Asus, DFI and Abit.
CPUs you got: AMD and nothing else (Socket 939) (Sandiego Core).
Video Card you got: Nvidia and ATI.
Rams: You got: Mushkin, Kingston, Corsair and few others.
Case get full size and not micro or a barebone like that.
PSU get minimum 500W

That's about it. Let me know if I left out something.

If you are a serious gamer you could consider getting a soundcard with it (creative X-Fi Xtreme music) and a gaming keyboard (Logitech G15).

Prices are in euro €. Taken from komplett.nl.

I like the case because it has the high-res touch screen on it, and it functions as a backup monitor, but then again, It probably is a waste of money if I didn't have a monitor but 5 hard drives.

I like The Brick's list; I'm probably gonna wait until the new AM2 motherboards come out so that I can use AMD's 65nm processors next year.

Should I get two hard drives? Like a WD Caviar and WD new Raptor?

For memory I'd recommend G.SKILL 2x512 (UTT-BH5) or OCZ El Platinum Rev. 2 2x512 (TCC5). Model numbers are F1-3200BWU2-1GBGH for G.SKILL and OCZ4001024ELDCPER2-K for the OCZ RAM. I have the El Platinum Rev. 2 and it performs gorgeously. They both can sustain good amounts of voltage if you ever want to OC with them.

I personally would just get one of the 74GB WD Raptors. If you aren't going to be using that much that much space then go with the 36GB one. I mean honestly, you don't need that much space unless you're dealing with uncompressed video alot or something similar.

I'd get a fast WD raptor (36gb) for windows and program files, so it loads pretty fast. With that, another 250gb SATA hdd for storage, games and downloads and stuff.

I need to get this comp before school starts in the fall, and it kind of puts me in the awkward position of needing to buy an AM2 processor. (My dad doesn't like upgrades very much, especially after the purchase of a new computer). I heard somewhere that the only processor available for this summer for AM2 would be the FX-60. Is this true? Would it be cheaper? More expensive? If not, what would be the other models available?

Because Intel is shit?

I posted the link to a Core 2 Duo ready motherboard in my first post, but everyone kept on saying I should buy an AMD processor.

I laugh at that case for two reasons.

1.) Them for actually making it thinking that people might buy it.
2.) People actually buying it.

That thing looks like a ****ing microwave oven. What is that screen? Is it a screen?

Those are some exellent choices. There are only things I don't agree with;

-The monitor. The screen you chose has a native resolution of 1680x1050, which sucks for games. I suggest a higher quality 19" monitor (I have this one and it's truly awesome², I recommend it)

-The keyboard/mouse. I suggest a separate keyboard (the Logitech G15 is awesome, but wired) and mouse (Logitech g5 [wired] and g7 [wireless] are the best choices).

As for the speakers, if you already have a good 5.1 surround set and you're happy with it, stick with it. But if you need a new one and really want the best of the best, Gigaworks s750 7.1 is the way to go.

Note that all products I mentioned are clickable.

I'd suggest you to wait until Conroe is released later this year. I'll kick AMD's butt.

You can't wait forever. There are always new technologies coming up.

- I'll probably get that monitor

- I was just being lazy with the keyboard and mouse, I just thought the feature set was cool. I was going to get a G15 with a G5 mouse anyway if my dad thought I didn't need that set.

- I'll mostly be using this computer in a dorm, so most of the time I'll be wasting the potential for the speakers. I was kind of thinking about buying a good headset with the headphone sorround sound attachment from a company I forgot (Panasonic? Sony?). Plus that would put my budget around $3k and I said to my dad I would keep everything around $2.5k.

I have a bad gut feeling about Core 2 Duo for some reason...plus AM2 gives me the upgrade path to AMD's K8L architecture next year that will hopefully be a good response to Core 2.

You mean the Benq you chose or the Hyundai I picked [best choice]?

Speed-link? Zalman? They both have 5.1 headsets. I personally have the Speed-link Medusa 5.1. It's pretty good. The sound quality isn't really good for music, but good for games. The surround works, but needs some getting used to before you really hear exactly where everything's coming from. It doesn't feel as 'surround' as a surround speaker system. Also, it doesn't go really loud.

Edit:

What is that thing :| You don't need that. First of all, you need to buy a headset with it. Secondly, there's already a '5.1 surround through a stereo headphone' feature in the X-Fi soundcards.

You mean graphics cards don't you. A new CPU will last 3-4 years and if you buy some Conroe Core Duo 2 it'll last long.

- I meant the hyundai one, I'm just kind of concerned over its lack of widescreen.

-Thanks for pointing out the surround sound headsets thing, I guess that converter is meant only for portable devices.

if your looking for widescreen id sudjest the viewsonic vx2025(i think thats it)
great monitor, viewsonic will do replacment/repair for full dead pixels, but the downside is that it only does widescreen, if you have any other resoluion it streches it.

but most modern games support widescreen mode(which also gives you great fov) and if you have older games, there are a few websites that will make the resolution open to you.
