How does it work? Is it 100 extra health points? Or does it take off a fraction of damage?

At 100 suit energy just about anything short of a grenade will be totally ablated by suit energy. As it lowers, so too does the amount of damage it takes for you. At 21 suit energy, it will take a minority of the damage thrown at you. You will never die before running out of suit energy, though. I've never died before the suit energy runs out. In essence, yes, it's extra health. Only running out won't kill you.

I always thought that if it has 100 energy it absorbs 100 per cent of damage done by any given attack, ie grenade. As it goes down it absorbs correspondingly less damage, ie half the damage at 50 energy, one-tenth at 10 energy etc etc.

But then in the citadel it could absorb 200 per cent of the damage and that would be impossible. Maybe they capped it at 100 per cent or something.

It takes a portion of damage for bigger attacks like grenades, but absorbs all the damage from bullets at 100. If its not at 100, then things like bullets take off both health and suit power.

I thought it was possible to die with suit health, it's just an unlikely scenario to come up (especially in Half-Life 2 which doles out health regularly and will always prioritise giving you health over energy if you're low). If you have single digit health and you top up your energy, I'm pretty sure you'll die with some power still left in the tank.

Oh well, I guess it's a bonus for the next guy, once he's dragged your dead ass out of there.
