Would these handle 5.1 surround sound in HL2 and CS:Source?
Earphones!
If not, do I need a Sound Card for my PC to handle 5.1 or can I use my integrated hardware (it only has 1 line out)?
Thanks for yer time!

I'd say no you wouldnt get it, since it doesnt have 3 jacks or three speakers inside them. Theyre virtual and i'd probably wouldnt put my money on them sounding exactly like 5.1, but rather like normal stereo with a little more oomph.

For a real surround sound 5.1 youd need a new soundcard supporting it, it would have 3 or more jacks, Front, Sides, Back.

Ewww don't get those headphones. They're so uncomfortable...they don't fit in your ear properly and just hurt!

For the speakers, get these: http://www.zalmanusa.com/usa/product/view.asp?idx=110&code=023 I've been using them for almost a year, and they're simply FANTASTIC. The front/rear seperation isn't perfect, but it's enough to pinpoint sound locations. Price isn't bad either. I got mine for $80 Canadian

Oh, and you would have to get a sound card specifically designed for 5.1 sound, such as Creative's Audigy 2 line of cards (I currently have a Creative Audigy 2 ZS).

lol, you have the exactly the same headphones/soundcard as I do! :p

Anyway, if you want surround sound headphones, get the Zalman ones, and any soundcard with 5.1 support is no more than $40... if my calculations are correct.

The Zalmans are amazing... I too have an Audigy 2 ZS (Gamer Edition) and they work like a charm. Really cheap too.

I've got the Zalman's too, very satisfied, nice bass too :)
Look incredibly stupid on your head though

(using Nvidia Soundstorm as soundcard, best onboard sound there is)

I have some pretty good 3d sound headphones, forget what theyre called though

That would be sweet if I could get some with the same sound quality as a set of Ety's or Shures. Still, nice to know somebody's trying the concept because I love high-end earbuds. Cant wait til the technology hits that side of the market (or maybe it has already, I've not checked in a while).

-edit-

Wait. Nevermind. It's just that kinda spread-stereo apparently.

You need a 5.1 sound card eh?

Then how come I can use my 5.1's with my 6 channel audio mobo?

Or maybe that is the exception...

Because 6 channel is 5.1? Or do you mean that you should have a PCI separate soundcard? You don't, onboard works fine if it supports 6 channels.

Big Brother, stop spamming the boards with your short and pointless posts.

Grr

Don't mess with the Forum Police, pal.

You dont need to buy a soundcard if you have 6 channel or 5.1 integrated audio. However if you buy a PCI or USB soundcard by creative they have DSP that process audio in most games (not half life or doom) taking the load off of your CPU. Also they can add enviromental effects (like EAX) and allow more speakers to be connected to your computer. Note: you dont have to buy creative they are just well know for their soundcards that have DSP's that help framerates

Hey you guys that own the Zalmans. How are they at noise cancelling or keeping outside sounds outside?

I actually need a soulution that sounds good, gives me positional audio that is superior to stero headphones but still allows me to hear what's going on outside my head.

I have little kids that wake up crying sometimes and if I don't attend to them, the wife get's pissed. If I can't hear them then I'm screwed. :(

Thanks

Is there a version available with a mic built in?
Not a Zalman, but answer's the question

You likely won't hear the kids. They have the big fat earphone padding that blocks out a LOT of external noise. In my university dorm, someone could easily sneak in and take about half my stuff and I would have no clue whatsoever.

Hmm... what school do you go to? ;)

Seriously tho, thanks for the info.

Why not grab yourself one of these and stick the reciver upside down on the top of your monitor? Then if they light up, you will spot it and know the kids are crying.

Good idea, I think I have one of those around the house from when the kids were babies.

Thanks for reminding me.

I have an Audigy 2 ZS and the Gainward "HollyWood" 5.1 headphones. They have 3 plugs and do a good job of simulating a 5.1 setup. Although not better than Good Speakers in a well setup 5.1 set, I think they are better than most cheap 5.1 sets that are not setup properly. I would rate these as Great for gaming, and average compared to other headphones for listing to music/auido. Overall a great deal for gamers, especially at the $30 range.
