hey everybody I have just got half life 2 for christmas...I absolutly love it. I have a surround sound system installed on my computer and it works with every other game...I am sad to say it isn't working with half life 2 :-( ...I have been searching around and I have found that there was a fix for surround sound issues but I am unable to find it for myself...if anyone knows how to fix this i would much appreciate it. The problem isn't that my speakers are not working at all...it is when I turn away from a voice coming in front of me..the front speakers die out like they should, but no sound comes from the rear ones to create a surround sound....thank you very much

Hmm..that's happened to people before..how many speakers do you have? Make sure you have them on the right settings.

I have a full 5.1 surround sound system...I checked the sound settings using the software and I also did a speaker test with the same software. Music comes out of the back with music and other games...but no luck yet on HL2

yup I have checked the boxes in both my sound options and in the game...I downloaded the new AC97' drivers...still a no go

Same, if anyone finds a soloution please tell us :D

hahaha
i just begon today to play CSS.....
and i think ^WTF? Sound is Crappi!!!
i just play with earphones...... but in other games i can hear if something is behind mi in left or in right.. etc etc...
in CSS it is Weird.... if u hear something and u turn, it sounds from the wrong direction..... Ant its not a Left - Right channel Problem!!!
its a sound engine problem.....
Too much Bugs in HL2!!!!!

Hi.

I have surround sound problems too using ac97 onboard chip.
I sent RealTek.com.tw tech support an email about the problem, here is the reply I got back after 14 minutes :)
Dear User :

Sorry my reply too late !
Thank you for your assistance , we had found out this issue .
This was design limitation from older driver . It has licence problem .
We will fix this issue in the future .

Thanks
PC-Tech

Also, I read another forum like this one and it seems surround sound works using a3.63 drivers, but the link/ftp no longer hosts that file for download, so I have no clue if this is will fix our problem or not.

Well good job about the drivers.

I like the response lol :D

are all of you using an AC97 codec? im on an Nvidia soundstorm solution and surround works great and never had a problem

Yes it seems to be just a problem with realteks drivers that they are fixing.

the 3.63 drivers fixed the problem for me

just google it, i had to do a bit of digging but it is out there

Could you possibly post a link to that driver? I've googled it to death and noone seems to have that older driver anymore.

hmmm, i have a 6.1 surround system (i think its 6.1 lol, too early in morning for me to be sure of anything), its a audigy 2 platium ex and i have had no trouble what so ever with my sound... infact no problems with any of the game so i guess i lucky...
i find surround helpful in css cause gives me a hint of where the bad guys are from the sounds.

anyway just thought i would say, not boasting or anything just letting u know that its not a problem covering the whole range of surround sound systems

Read earlier, it's already been established that it's a problem with the current AC'97 drivers.

I got it here, its 10megs.

Anyone have the webspace to host it? AIM me espy623 and ill transfer it

EDIT: the reason im askin if anyone has the webspace is because it seems that this could fix the problem for lots of ac97 ppls

Hi.

Realtek released new drivers, version 3.68!

The readme pdf file is outdated since it was last modified for 3.65, so... Give these a try and report the good/bad. I'll post something tomorrow as well when I have the chance for some testing.

Driver Link.

Just one more person adding the fact that it works completely fine on my 6.1 system, tho I am forced to only get 5.1 due to difficulty outputting the sound to my external receiver.

3.68 Does not solve the problem for me.

meltingdude If you email me at [email protected] I can put it up on my MOD's webspace.

No luck with surround sound using 3.68, so I guess we wait.

^Ben,
Let us know when you have the file hosted, because I gave up on google.com :rolling:

meltingdude, ^Ben,

Thanks! I'm downloading them now, I'll let you all know how they turn out.

I have 5.1 speakers and everything works perfect.

But how do I get the back speakers to play when I am just on the desktop? Like listening to WinAmp or something?

But everything works in-game.

Surround sound works for me using 3.63.
Thanks for the driver!

Also, I'll keep everyone posted when Realtek releases a newer driver that works. :hmph:

The new drivers didn't work. I decided to test the ac'97 codec which came with my mobo. that worked :) the version was A3.56.

Can anyone please explain how to install the 3.63 realtek drivers. I downloaded from this page and I unzipped the file. Then I got a little lost I used win rar to unzip some more files (wasnt sure if I needed to do so) I would appreciate if anyone could give me a brief explanation.

download the file,

unzip it to a directory

the directory now contains several rar files, when you extract them all (just double click on any ONE of the rar files, and extract it to some directory), you will have one .exe file. Run this file to install the drivers

Hi.

Tech support sent me this concerning the HL2 problem with surround sound using AC'97. If you are still having problems even with the older driver set v3.63, then give these beta drivers a try.

Dear User :

I'm sorry for my reply too late .
We had fixed half life 2 for multi-channel problem .
The driver D3D engine had been updated .
Please try to download latest beta3 driver .

I haven't had time to check them out, let me know how these work for all of you. I will post my findings later today. Good luck!

Well, good news, everyone. The latest beta drivers (released 1/31/05) do fix the surround sound problem with realtek. Hooray!
(this is also my first post. Double Hooray!!)

I've still got a problem with the new drivers installed. Before I had no audio at all when I wasn't facing the audio source. I now have audio when I am looking away from a sound source but not from my rear speakers. All audio appears on the front speakers only. So I'm only running in 2 channel. This is on an A8N-SLI mobo.

sorry for the bump.

just got a new pc 7800gtx on a a8n sli deluxe mobo.

ive odnt know which drivers to install to fix the surround problem, i run with four speakers an all other games work but hl2 and its mods dont.

is there a fix yet?

please help, im fed up of turning around to see what i can hear and being shot in the back coz i turned the wrong way
