1 large rabbit is plenty.

(braised and cooked with potatoes and herbs, mmmmmm)

What commonly used herb can be used to ward of ticks and makes a powerful antibiotic?

Actually... in a true survival situation, since most civilised people nowadays have such a high fat content diet, you couldn't survive on rabbit without supplementing your diet with some kind of fat. Some of the early explorers died with stomachs full of rabbit because it was not high enough in fat content to sustain them.

To avoid protien poisoning from a rabbit diet, you would need to eat the organs (including brains and eyes) as well as bones to get the fat needed to survive.

If you're going to answer these questions seriously, then at least get your facts straight ;)

And I'm wondering how the hell did you end up knowing that.

Fat is supposed to be a really good fuel... our bodies just aren't efficient enough to deal with it. Your efficiency goes up with better muscles, the muscles can use the fat more quickly if they are bigger/stronger/whatever.

But yes, fat is an essential part of the diet. I'm not even sure that it's fat that makes you 'fat'.

jabber, here is a SIT UP guide for all

get something comfy to lie on

1) Lie down, put knees up so they are bent @ approz 90 degree angle, feet flat on floor,

2) you can make this ahrder by having hands touching your temples, otherwise hands over knees

3) lift sholdersand head off of floor 1 go back down 2

3){ repeat 20 times
4) lift shoulers up , 1 lift shoulde3rs furhter ,2,

5) start in same position ( /\__|o )

5) put one leg on top of other knee so its like ssitting crosslegged but ont he floor

6){ lift (1) then touch opposing elbow to opposing leg e.g. right elbow to left knee

7) doing 1 up, 2 touching 3 back to up position 4 down on ground ( rest)

8_} hands on temples put legs straight up in the air, up , hold , down hold

9) side plank >---¬o the aim of this is to work obliques, to make it harder you can rasie your leg so its liek a star jump but holding oneslef in that position

10) also the re is a normal plank, into pressup position but with elbows on the floor, keep back straight, and hold body in aplank liek position for as long as possible, tip, if you are doing this right you shold be shaking remember to breath

11) after doing any ab excersices, lkie on your back arms ver your head, breath in and stretch out to legnthen abs.

DON'T do situps, do crunches. IT's dangerous for your back.

Exactly. Once your muscles begin to grow, not only will they replace the lipidic tissues, they will also consume even more energy gained (fat, sugar). The fat only sits there in your body.

ZOMG, you don't know? :O

Karl Marx invented them as a successor to the sit-up! :|
OMG Im a failure at socialism :*(

Woo at my location!

alright im fine with abdominal strength, and legs (its the breathing that gets me) but i got little twiggy arms and is the pushup teally the most efficent way to build up your arms? just do like 2 sets of 20 a day or something?

Yes! Thanks to joims i can realise my dream of winning Mr. Universe...

I understood the basic sit up parts, but kind of hazy on the other, more complex, bits. Don't quite get the crosslegged position one.

Edit: What exacly is the difference between a situp and a crunch?

This is awesome. Now we all have survival skills for when the internet breaks down and Short Recoil can't bask us in his radiant glow.

Here's a survival skill: realize that you're living in a freaking city, walk to the mall and buy a low-fat sandwich.

WIN.

situps go up further if i am not mistaken while crunches you just raise yourself up past your shoulders a little bit, but thats from gym class so.. who knows

that doesnt help with getting in shape, i can't walk to a mall they all need to be accesed by freeways/highways, and im not fat anyway, i am a twiggy mofo i just need to gain a tinch of muscle, thus the thred. DO NOT MOCK WHAT YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND !

I wish I could just have a montage and then be ripped

Pushups actually work the chest muscles more than the arms. If you want arm strength then try various dumbell exercises. Still do pushups though since they are an all around good exercise and will still do a lot of good for the arms.

ech, by abdominal i meant like the stomach region, above that an 8 year old girl could rape me in a fight

If you have a weak chest as well then push ups and chin ups will do wonders for you.

lol the most chin ups i've done in my life is 2 and one was from the momentum of juping up to the bar and i basically cheated the second one

Thats why I use them as an indication for how strong my chest is. The number of pushups you can do in one sitting often varies from day to day. The number of chin ups you can do however seems (at least for me) to increase at a very constant rate depending on how strong my chest is becomming. The most I was ever able to do was 10.

dude, last year when i had to take gym class, one of my friends got up there and did 20 and believe me, doing like 2 cheating ones then seeing somebody do 20 is like, "omg wtf", lol

uhh i dont think you use your chest for pullups, or chinups. pullups = biceps, chinups = back/shoulders. maybe i'm wrong i dont know - those are just the parts that get tired for me.

best exercises w/o equipment are probably pushups, pullups, crunches, and running. ive gone from 2 pullups to 14 this year and its pretty cool to watch. im still scrawney as hell!

how are protein drinks?

Survival Skill #2:

If you see a bear, do not try to eat the bear.
Even the brown bears are not chocolate.

Survival Skill #3:

Tree branches can be used to build a makeshift shelter or "tree hole".
Proudly announce that you're going to lube up and crawl into your "tree-hole".
(Lube optional.)

Survival Skill #4:

If you have a robot, make sure that your robot is compatible for all-terrain maneuverability.
If your robot is not compatible, try "downloading" a "patch" from the "internet".

Survival Skill $5:

You'd be surprised what you can do with bendy straws and twine.
Make sure to load up with both before you travel outside.

Survival Skill #6:

Comb your hair, you look terrible.

Survival Skill #7:

Before you go, do the proper research. Maybe Tom Clancy wrote an action-packed novel about nuclear terrorists hiding out in your vacation destination, and only one man could stop them.

Survival Skill #9:

Experienced Woodsmen (Spanglers) call human urine "nature's cure-all", because it can literally do anything.
When in doubt, coat the object in a steady stream.

Survival Skill #10:

Oh no aliens look out they are heading for your campsite and they don't look like the great gazoo if you know what I mean I mean they look mad because I think this not an ordinary clearing it is an alien crop circle and you are disrupting their grass-based message and they can trace that like with *69 so they know that you're involved and the are heading down to crack skulls I don't think they are really allergic to water but maybe urine will do the trick at the very least they'll be startled also if you have any weapons pull them out of your tree-hole and start just using them oh yeah Survival Skill #11 is to bring a weapon in case of aliens but I guess it is too late now haha better late than never oh lucky you that bear got one of the aliens in a BEAR TRAP very convenient that they learned to use those oh dear but he's melted now because of the sun's RAYS he was the only chocolate bear in the entire world how tragic lucky again that the other alien got his foot wrapped in twine so that chocobears sacrifice was not in vain hey I guess they are allergic to twine maybe because the last alien tripped on it an landed on a bendy straw BOOM HEADSHOT terrorists win now where'd I put that robot?

well yeah the benchpress is designed to work your pectorals and upper chest. but i think dumbbell fly's or whatever (you sit on an inclined seat and bring weight from your shoulders to above your head) work as well :D

Cool thread. Short recoil, I need some advice on good back and lats exercises I can do freely at home without some kind of pulling string.

Also, is it best to do cardio before or after working out?

I'm wondering how important it is to get weights that make your muscles fail after a session. My dumbbells aren't that seriously heavy nowadays, but my brother says I should stick with those and I should still keep developing my triceps and biceps, but lots of sites I read say you should always update your bells so they'll be heavy as hell.

Best exercise for lats have to be wide grip pull ups.
Grip facing away from you, arms extended outwards so when you pull yourself up your chest touches the bar (hands usually about 70cm apart)

Try and keep cardio to seperate days to weight sessions, your body needs energy to build muscle, doing cardio will blast all hope of this.
I tend to have my weekly rest day after the cardio day, so sat would be cardio sunday day of rest.....

As for "getting your muscles to fail" don't quite go that far each time, not good, prob means you are doing too many reps.

For muscle gain 6 to 8 reps of very heavy weight (8 will HURT), do one set lighter weight 1st and then heavier either once or twice, depending which you feel compfortable doing.

For toning 10-15 reps of "moderate hard" weight (you'll be puffing slightly at each set) do a solid 3 sets, same weight.

you do have a fair point there, my diet is generally about 3-4% fat, most westerners have 8 or more, my body has become used to metabolising proteins fast.
Like you say, most people should have a bit of fat, particularly when in a cold environment, when i go on survival practice i like to take a little pouch with sunflower seeds or nuts in so if i can't find food i won't die.
Nuts are wonderfully good survival food, IF you know how to find them. (i'll go into this more when i don't need to go to sleep)

I probably just missed previous posts by you short recoil describing what kind of survival/outdoors experience you have, but I would like to know. Very helpful in knowing what I can ask.

Also I would just like to add that if you are fairly lazy and not very fit right now that swimming is in my experience one of the best forms of exercise you could possibly find. You don't even have to do boring laps, just make sure you are moving most of the time without any floatation devices. It is very fun and will work out just about every muscle in the body including ones that normally don't recieve any work out at all. Personally I love going under water and swimming, I just feel so free when I have three degrees of movement, and since I enjoy it so much it also pushes the maximum amount of time I can hold my breath much higher. When I still couldn't hold my breath for very long one of the proudest things I could do was swim one length of a pool completely submerged.

This thread is rather interesting. A lot of good info here.

As an eagle scout I can contribute where need be. Finding food out doors is one of the things people should know if they want any hope of surviving outside. There are many edible plants if you can't trap any animals. A good rule of thumb for plants is if it's not bitter it is safe to eat. Also check and see what animals like deer are eating, because then it will also be good for you to eat, and that deer too.

I will also throw a few winter survival tips in here. Many people will complain about their hands being cold even when they have gloves on...so they try to warm their hands up some how when in fact their hands aren't under exposed at all. The problem is their body isn't warm enough so the first things to feel the cold will be your ectremeties...feet and hands and nose. When those are cold warm yourself up, add another layer to warm your body up. Some of the best ways to warm up is walking/movement and eating. Make sure you eat a high calorie diet when your out in the cold as you will burn a lot more calories trying to stay warm.

When your going to sleep out doors make sure you have a mat or you will freeze to death. Also make sure you aren't breathing on your sleeping bag or you will get it wet and it will freeze. That has happened to me and it isn't fun when your in the middle of no where. When you go to sleep strip all of your clothes off that you wore. They will make you colder because their retain moisture from sweat. Take everything off, I usually sleep in my boxers and am plenty warm. If you find you are still cold boil some water and put it in your nalgene(best water bottles) and cover it with a shirt or something and stick it in your sleeping bag. It will warm you up...a lot. If you start sweating take it out and let it cool off some. You might want to sleep on your clothes...or at least the tops of your boots so it won't freeze shut. Getting up in the morning will be a lot of fun...if you like freezing your ass off. Best bet is to put your freezing clothes on as fast as you can and get outside and walk a mile or so to warm up.

I need combat training. Conscription is 5 years away.

I would just like to add that you should never follow the "if it's not bitter it is safe to eat" rule when it comes to fungi and especially mushrooms. Never even think of eating any kind of mushroom unless you actually are some sort of expert when it comes to mushrooms. I have seen even people who are more or less experts at wilderness survival eat the wrong kind of mushroom and have to be air lifted to a hospital.

I'm not going to get into any hand to hand or martial arts stuff. I'm just going to get my concealed carry eventually, and I'll be all set.

What is a crunch???
Crunch is a type of candybar. If you eat a hundred every day you will have a 6 pack in no time.

I don't really believe much in doing weights. The health benefits are pretty minimal compared to exercise (aka cardiovascular work). And well my muscles are good enough for doing what I need them to do. During most of my days I would be hard pressed (heh) to find a situation where I need to bench 150 lbs or exert an equivalent force with my pectorals. So why train your muscles for that motion?? Also I'm not one to wear tight shirts and walk around with my arms sticking out out because they physically can't hang straight either. I used to lift weights a lot when I was competing at high level rowing, but that's just because having stronger muscles helps a lot in races. Still not as much as aerobic capability, but you need every edge you can get.

Good way to build up strength and endurance with calisthenics, nothing out of the way like going to a gym or anything?

Weight training is absolutely awesome. If you are educated enough, you can get incredibly strong in a few months to maybe a year. Dedication and intelligence in the gym will get just about anyone jacked.
