There's a difference between 'hating' nVidia and 'not liking' nVidia. And since my GFX card is a GeForce and it runs fine, I've got nothing against them.

Finnally! i'm running a 5800 Ultra, ( the elephant in the washing machine) but its playing stuff good, and i've got no probs. Noise isnt really that bad anyway...

Here is my system if you need a good idea.

It's not the top-o-the-line, but it'll run any game, inlcuding Half Life2, at full details with great FPS:

Athlon XP 3000/333 (2.18 ghz)
1 Gigabyte PC2700 DDR-Ram
Ati Radeon 9700 Pro (Catalyst 3.8 Drivers)
MSI KT4V-L MotherBoard, (1.9 BIOS) - onboard 5.1 Realtek Sound, LAN
Antec Performance Plus Tower Case
430 Watt Antec True-Power PSU
LG CD/DVD-Rom 42X
Maxtor 40 GB HDD, 7200 RPM with Indexing
WINDOWS XP

That'll cost you around $600. Cheap for today's retailing standards and a high performance gaming machine

$600??

If I send you $600 will you build me that system?

That's a nice setup, but I think you might need to check the total on your receipts again.

I had read that the Recommended requirements were as follows:

256 RAM (DDR is what you'd want)
1+ Gig processor.
DX 9 compatible card.
4 Gigs HDD space <----This is where I thought I went blind!

That's pretty much it, of course you'd want a nice monitor and be sure you're new Mainboard has the proper slots.
