Hiroo Onoda (小野田 寛郎 Onoda Hirō; born March 19, 1922) is a former Japanese army intelligence officer who fought in World War II, and did not surrender until 1974.

Onoda was trained by the Nakano School who was stationed on Lubang Island in the Philippines. He was there when it was reclaimed by the Allies in February 1945, towards the conclusion of World War II. Most of the Japanese troops were killed or captured by Allied forces. Onoda, and several other men, hid in the jungle.

Onoda continued his campaign, initially living in the mountains with three fellow soldiers (Yuichi Akatsu, Siochi Shimada and Kinshichi Kozuka). One of his comrades, Akatsu, eventually surrendered to Filipino forces in 1950 and confirmed that Onoda and the other two were alive. Shimada was killed in a gun battle with local forces in 1954, and Kozuka was killed in 1972, leaving Onoda alone in the mountains. For 29 years, he refused to surrender, dismissing as a ruse every attempt to convince him that the war was over. In 1959, Onoda was declared legally dead in Japan.

Found by a Japanese student, Norio Suzuki, Onoda still refused to accept that the war was over unless he received orders to lay down his arms from his superior officer. Suzuki offered his help, and returned to Japan with photographs of himself and Onoda as proof of their encounter. In 1974 the Japanese government located Onoda's commanding officer, Major Taniguchi, who had since become a bookseller. He flew to Lubang and informed Onoda of the defeat of Japan in WWII and ordered him to lay down his arms. Lieutenant Onoda emerged from the jungle 29 years after the end of World War II, and accepted the commanding officer's order of surrender in his uniform and sword, with his Arisaka Type 99 rifle still in operating condition, 500 rounds of ammunition and several hand grenades.

they even have to contact its former officer to told him the war was over

thats like dam

Thats awesome. I remember watching about him on discovery. And his officer speaking to him on a megaphone.

He beats the Tf2 soldier by a mile.

Seriously, Al-Qaeda doesn't have shit on this.

What a silly statement.

I heard about this guy awhile ago. Hes pretty devoted, sad to see his life was pretty much wasted though.

That is awesome.

Words cannot describe the hardcoreness of that, and although he may have been an enemy of my country (or the goverment-in-exile), this guy gets my utmost respect.

Indeed, I commend anyone who is will actually go to this extent willingly.

As for my previous statement, Al Qaeda is loyal to the point that they'll usually suicide bomb the enemy, while this guy hunkers down practically isolated from the outside world (with the exception of the enemy) for thirty years.

Don't get me wrong, it takes quite a man to die for anything, but it takes even more of a man to stay alive for something in the right context.

That would be horrifying, to find some crazy old dude on your hike who is armed with military weapons and believes the war is still going on.

My question is, do you think he would have come down for a........... Klondike Bar?

Hardcore.

And I can't believe no one has said it yet, Japan: Superior

I'm expecting a movie out of this anytime soon.

Japanese hicks?

Reminds me of the stories I've heard of former Confederate soldiers after the U.S. Civil War refusing to accept surrender for several decades. (i.e. "The South will rise again!")
Similar story in an earlier time, different place, and a different culture.

So yeah, I guess one could say he was a Japanese hick. :D

If I were him, I would. 29 years-old in a jungle alone without a Klondike bar? ... KLONDIKE BAR.

*what would you do for a klondike bar?* lol

I remember watching a documentary about him on BBC, a Timewatch episode, really interesting.

****ing chicken, he should have chopped his head off and impaled himself on some coral. People like him do not deserve to be immortalized because of his stupidity. I hope he finds a new direcion in life, such as wiping my ass after a sevre case of food poisoning.

I thought the Japanese were taught to never surrender. Never means never ever, not wait 30 years, then surrender. He's doing it wrong.

Becuase you at your ****ing PC typing away probably never having stood up for a cause in your life are so much better than a man who fought for a cause he believed in who upheld the oath he swore for 30 years after his comrades were killed and deserted him. He alone stood firm and resolute, a man of unshakeable integrity and commitment.

I say he's one of the finest human specimens ever to have lived.

I say he is a nutcase. Yeh I believe in standing up for a cause and have an undieing commitment for something but all he gone and done is thrown his life away, because he couldnt contemplate the fact that the war had ended yonks ago and the world had changed, he held on to his weapons when there were no enemies to fight anymore.

In this case there is a fine line between disapline of war and duty, and downright common sense.

He certainly had far more integrity and honor than is the norm. Whether you'd call that nuts or not...
