What do you guys think about tax?
Is it something that should be accepted or resisted?
When is a tax too high - is 42% income tax as it is in ireland too high or just right

the real queation is how to make taxation less of a burden or more useful

I have no clue about taxes, all I know is that stuff I buy has GST. other than that, no clue.

It's more than 50% of your income tax here in Belgium...

We actually pay the most taxes in the whole world.

As countries claim to do that. We pay 40% tax, plus more in social fees. Employers pay close to 60% tax I think.

Us Brits complain about being taxed, yet want good public services requiring taxation.

Paradoxical eh?

Everything is taxed.

You work and get paid - taxed
Pay into a pension fund - taxed
Buy food - taxed
Buy a house - taxed
Save money in bank - taxed
Pay insurance - taxed
Buy a car - taxed
Fuel car - taxed
Give money away - taxed
Die - taxed

In short, all the money you earn goes back to the government. Unless you die rich, and donate the money to running a house with 34 cats.

we do the same in the U.S.

As the saying goes, there's two things in life you can count on...Death and taxes.

i think personally tax is a good thing, but l8ely were being taxed too heavily for shit that we shouldn't be taxed for. Then on top of that the tax dollars are being spent towards futile things like the iraq war and not on things like our education or health. I think if we concetrated a little more on our own country things would even out but at the current time it's horrendous.

ya I have to agree with my man shadow here a fellow new yorker like he said the tax dollars should go to better things...

I have an accountant for a father, but still have no idea about taxes...
Good old GST!

wtf is VAT

Value Added Tax. You may have seen something advertised as say £10.99 ex VAT. In teh end you will have to pay that price + an extra 17.5% of the price so you end up paying ~£12.91

I have seen something similar in america, you would see something on a shelf in a shop for say $4.99 and you would end up having to pay more.

It's the same thing with GST (General Service Tax) it's something close to 10% for small goods

Nobody likes taxes, but they are necessary.

No. A portion of all the money you earn goes to the government.

Think 'big picture'. Eventually, it all goes back. Everything. Its inescapable, unless you actually physically chuck the money on a bonfire - and chances are some greenies will arrest you, and you'll be taxed for polluting the atmosphere......

I think the main complaint is that we pay away such large amounts of our salaries, yet see little of it in return. Although I guess it beats living somewhere where it's every man for himself, guns in arms, etc.

Like in my nation, see sig for details of how to join.

I think it's 25% tax in the UK, until you earn £33k (maybe) then it's 40%. Which is quite high when you're struggling to pay mortgages, running a car, etc etc.

In the U.S. we call it sales tax, not all states have it though. For example, here in California, its 8.250%, so yes something listed as $4.99 actually costs $5.40, but certain items are exempt.

And as for money spent on school instead of war...
schools are for a vast majority suported by STATE taxes, while the military is entirley federal.

As for what's best... hard to say. Sweden has HUGE taxes, but tons of stuff is free/subsidized. Tax exempt countries (there are many islands esp. in the Carribean with no tax) rely on completely other means and... well... I can't say how well their governments are doing...
And the U.S. and Canada have very complicated taxing methods and laws... so its really just a big mess
