Pasco County substitute teacher's job is on the line, but this time it's because of a magic trick.

The charge from the school district ? Wizardry!

Substitute teacher Jim Piculas does a 30-second magic trick where a toothpick disappears then reappears.

But after performing it in front of a classroom at Rushe Middle School in Land 'O Lakes, Piculas said his job did a disappearing act of its own.

"I get a call the middle of the day from the supervisor of substitute teachers. He says, 'Jim, we have a huge issue. You can't take any more assignments. You need to come in right away,'" he said.

When Piculas went in, he learned his little magic trick cast a spell that went much farther than he'd hoped.

"I said, 'Well Pat, can you explain this to me?' 'You've been accused of wizardry,' [he said]. Wizardry?" he asked.

Tampa Bay's 10 talked to the assistant superintendent with the Pasco County School District who said it wasn't just the wizardry and that Picular had other performance issues, including "not following lesson plans" and allowing students to play on unapproved computers.

Piculas said he knew nothing about the accusations.

"That... I think was embellished after the fact to try to cover what initially what they were saying to me," he said.

After the magic trick, Rushe's principal requested Piculas be dismissed.

I checked a number of times but the url didnt say theonion.com

they should do the dunking in water test to prove he's not a wizard

Poorly written article, I'm not sure if the source is reliable. You got a second source for this, Stern?

The article does seem bad, but I'll just go with it.

That's fkn nuts. I hate people.

Except he wasn't fired, the school district just chose not to call him for any more work, something that they are completely entitled to do seeing as he is an on call worker. He is still a substitute teacher, and can work for other school boards. Among the reasons they cited was that he wasted classroom time with magic tricks instead of teaching. They never used the word wizardry.

you live in florida dontcha?

oh and ..

"After the magic trick, Rushe's principal (the school he was doing magic tricks at) requested Piculas be dismissed."

and further more:

and point out where they say he was wasting time with magic tricks?

I hate it when people defend the indefensible

Well to be fair, just because he lives in Florida, doesn't mean he doesn't also get news from other states.

well to be fair you're assuming that that's what I meant when all I meant was that he was defending his home state

I live in florida too. Wanna fight about it?

nah I'm afraid you might turn me into a toad or cast a scroll of impotence my way

Good. Magic tricks have nothing to do with education, what we need is science.

"hey look a coin was on your ear"

"omg a warlock lets hunt him!"*all kids raise torchs*

Stern's postcount is already looking to succeed mine in a matter of days...

But anyway, if they dismissed him simply for the magic trick, that's not right.

Yes... The prinipal of the school said he would not be assigning the "Substitute teacher Jim Piculas" anymore. He won't be asked to work substitute jobs at the school. He can still substitute at other places.

and further more: <quote>
That was a word the article used.

Assistant Superintendent Renalia DuBose said the word "wizardry" never came up on the school district's end.

it figures you'd nitpick my comments instead of commenting on the story ..because you're like that

anyways:

Now, Piculas believes the incident may have bewitched his ability to get a job anywhere else.

and we're at an impasse because:

Tampa Bay's 10 talked to the assistant superintendent with the Pasco County School District who said it wasn't just the wizardry

magic, socery, wizardry whatever the outcome is the same

and this is ok with you? why wont they ask him back to the school?

It figures you get super defensive whenever someone makes a comment about the accuracy or quality of the article you posted, but I guess you're like that.

Being fired for 'wizardry' is ridiculous, obviously. But we have no idea how proficient of a substitute this guy was, and according the the articles, there is reason to believe he possibly wasn't very good. Rather, he wasted too much time in class.

Some wizardry term might have been used in casual conversation, but it wasn't part of the official statement of why he was fired, according to the article I read. Like the sub said though, all the stuff about wasting time in class could just be an excuse for something as ridiculous as being fired for black magic or whatever.

I was just bringing to your attention some things that you shot down without a second thought. Because you get too defensive whenever someone says something against a news article you post. As if insulting the article is an insult to you. Neither of us know the real truth, so it's no use pretending you do, but we should have all the evidence, right? That's all I was doing.

yadda yadda yadda ..who the **** cares? stop over analysing every goddam little insignificant point and laugh with/at the story ..jebus I keep looking for your sense of humour but turn up nothing

Heh, but you do make me laugh though!

If you can't take the heat don't reply to me in the first place, stern.

I'm not talking about insignificant points. I'm talking about the same points Dan brought up and the same ones we've been talking about.

I love how every time we argue you ALWAYS end up accusing me of taking it too seriously, when it was in fact YOU who got too defensive over 'your' article in the first place.

sigh

vageta: killer of the funny every single time ..really do we need to do this every ****ing time I start a new thread? I know you're young and full of piss and vinegar but give it a rest; you'll enjoy life more ..and I doubt I make you laugh, perhaps twist uncomfortably in your computer chair in impotent rage but not laugh ..anyways I waste far too mcuh time arguing with you when there's much hilarity to discover on the interwebs

You and Dan were arguing before I even entered the thread. Explain how I'm the killer of the funny.

In fact, I usually jump into threads to argue with you to continue an argument someone started with you but were too frustrated with your antics to continue.

Like I said before, stop replying to me then. Let's see if you can do it. I know you can't.

Cpt. Stern and vegeta are like a married couple who have long since gotten fed up with each other, but are too stubborn to get a divorce, and are now forced to live together with a person they hold nothing but contempt for, bickering and arguing over nonissues for all eternity.

You have got to be ****ing kidding me, did you just say that?

You know... ever since Vegeta has taken my place with CptStern... I feel like me and Stern have gotten a divorce...

It feels terrible, absolutely terrible. I don't even get any ****ing alimony.

EDIT: crisis averted.

Veggie - don't be a gloating douche.

So that means you were the man in the relationship? Lol sterns a girl.

I think it's the opposite of what you just said. :O

At least, per historical tradition. :O
