Team Fortress 2 fails to show at E3 (yet again)

Looks like Valve is reneging on the stated promise of TF2 news "in the Spring", or at least at E3. I was really hoping Valve would surprise us with a TF2 blowout at E3, as I've been anticipating this game forever and been disappointed by past E3 no-shows. I'm hoping the "TF news is on the way" means neither a mere TFC-Source conversion nor another year for more delay quotes.

Gamecloud - Is Team Fortress 2 still in some kind of development and if so when can we expect news about the game?

Doug Lombardi - I don't have a specific date to share for when we will be updating folks, but TF news is on the way.

It was never planned to be shown at this E3

I guess the "TF2 news in the Spring" didn't resonate with you. Then again, Spring ends in June...

"TF2 news in the Spring"

I can't recall seeing that from any word from Valve. Link/Source?

the TF news for Spring is: Team Fortress2 isn't ready to be shown yet...

Now we are all up to date! :D

oh man. Valve ive had enough of source conversions already. TELL US SOMETHING NEW.

Give us TF2 :D

DAMN YOU VALLLVVVVEEE!!! Been waiting for this game for.... umm, is it 8 years now?

Valve needs to stop making these promises! its only hurting us!

Well, they didn't actually mention anything about E3. Other than Half-Life 2 on the X-box will be there.

who cares about team fortress?...

OMG, die.

I can't belive TF2's development. I've gotten my hopes up so many times, even after meeting Gabe Newell myself, actually shaking his hand, and having him tell me TF2 info comes right after HL2's release. Blech. My dreams, crushed into so many peices.

From the Valve Report posted about a month ago.

Employees get to choose where how they work, by themselves, with an office-mate, or in 4 person cabals. The first office I stopped into was one of the mappers. She was working on a map for (gasp) Team Fortress 2, the remake of tf_well. She showed us a sheet of images that she was using for inspiration, various pictures from train yards and such. The map was looking very nice, even though it was in the “grey-squares” stage of development, meaning textures, props, skyboxes, and effects still needed to be added. I had talked to Gabe about the map Lincoln and I were working on, along with a few members of our clan and members from PA. Lincoln went onto PA to find a mapper willing to help us, and we got a few builds done before the map was pretty much abandoned. Gabe gave me some advice on that, and so did the mapper, talking about how it was valuable to get the design of the map done before we applied art to it. We had done some of that, taking inspiration from Half-Life 2 and pictures of Eastern Europe. Then we went to a room filled with concept art for the classes in TF2. Gabe did a little test on me, asking which class I thought each concept was. Then we met a couple of guys, who put me on a test with newer concept art from TF2, in the same kind of test. I got 8 out of 9 classes, messing up on the Scout concept, though I got basic gist of his job as a fast in-and-out kind of guy right. I don’t know, I’ve just got this weird preconception of what a scout should look like in my head. The concepts were very different from what the characters looked like in TFC. They are no longer just different sets of weapon load-outs. These concepts added character to the classes. The Medic wore a long WW2 style German trench coat, wielding a large syringe and sporting a pair of round framed glasses. The engineer wore a hardhat, goggles, and overalls, with a wrench in one hand and a welding torch in the other. When asked what I thought about the pictures, I told them that I thought concepts really captured what that particular class did, and they really liked hearing that. I was then taken to some of the animations for the Heavy Weapons Guy. The chain gun he held in his hands was humungous, with a cylindrical ammo carrier twice the size of his head mounted under the main part of the gun. His legs looked like they were struggling with the weight of the chain gun, and while the animation on the upper-body was only still placeholder, it still portrayed the strain carrying the gun was having on his body. All in all, I really like the new concepts for TF2. They’re like something you’d see in a comic book, and that’s the vibe I get from TF, like you’re in this sort of battle where afterwards, the survivors would shrug it off and go at it again, sort of like paintball.

This will take a while...

get this man some onions! :upstare:
hmm..as for TF, i am not expecting much news on it simply because Valve is busy with the lost coast stuff and the HL2 expansion.

these things take time...especially when u consider how good they turn out...it just all doesn't happen over night ya know? :p

Well they are also holding out on info of it because VUG might try and get it to be published under their name, that could happen if they release info before their end date with current publisher.

Yeh im glad that valve took the time to make HL2 as good as it could be. Even If they did make me furious
:afro:<----That always cracks me up

Personally, I think it'll be awhile before we see TF2, soley because of this: http://www.bluesnews.com/screenshots/games/etqw/20050516/edf_base_scramble.jpg

(Enemy Territory + Tribes + Quake II) * (Doom 3 Engine + new technology to render huge outdoors areas + polycounts that don't suck) = Yowza. If Valve wants TF2 to have any longevity, they're going to have to put some major muscle behind the Source engine to compete with that!

Quake Wars isn't being release till next year, so they could get it out, fall/holiday 05 and be fine, TF2 will do fine, not every game survives due to graphics, I mean look at CS 1.6

Some ppl said the same thing about HL2,now its out and ppl are playing it,so why shouldent Valve be able to get TF2 finshed, even if they always miss their promissed timeline they always deliver right???

No, DNF was the next DNF :D

We have to have DNF come out before something can replace it. :D

Then I guess we can safely say it cannot be replaced.

Thats not a compliment.

Remember when Half-Life 2 got that Vapourware award? After it was 3 months late.

Stupid Journalists.

It's a pity TF2 is still not out. Looks like it will be the same as DNF.

I've only recently gotten back into TFC, and am enjoying it as I always used to do. I just didn't bother for a long time because the server browser I used hardly showed any games running, but I have to admit, thanks to Steam I'm enjoying TFC again, even if a lot of the time it's with (albeit very good) bots.

Well if neither appears it's quite clear what's happened.

The Americans have stolen them.

damn right we did!! we used are sk1llz to h4xx0r teh code!!11!

with games like Enemy Territory: Quake wars, Battlefield 2
two new consoles and a slew of next gen games, Valve will have to really dig in deep to make a stand.

however it could be a good, or bad thing that it was not shown.

E3 is a showing for games that won't be out for a while, (in most cases) so that may indicate TF2 may be closer to release than we expect.... or it could mean the exact opposite.

any idea what the "coming soon" above DoD:Source means? it's been there for like a year now.

i guess but Valve isn't known to work that way...at least thats not how i see it.
lets face it, gamers are impatient people for the most part...i mean Feath just pointed out about HL2 getting vapourware award when it was 3 months late

and people are right when they say Valve will need to do serious work to the source engine if its going to compete with the likes of BF2 and Quake Wars and if u take my other points in consideration (The Lost Coast, Aftermath), i just don't see TF2 any time soon and well...just forget about getting any TF2 news and if, by chance a bit of news is released...consider it gravy and one just can't be disappointed with that line of thinking.

Look at how hugely popular star craft was, maybe (probally) more popular then tf2. Still no SC2 yet though. Blizzard would be idiotic not to create a second one, I think the same goes for valve and tf2. Alot of these companies are working on new games you dont even know about, and have other things going on give them time. Im sure tf2 will come, eventually....
