Team Fortress 2 Trailer

A lot of people are complaining about how this could just be TFC:Source. A much worse case scenario is if they break this tried and tested formula. Then again, with a track record of DeathMatchClassic (Quake DM clone), CS:S (Counter-Strike + pretties) and DoD:S (Day of Defeat + pretties and a few key changes), I can't see them veering too far from the gameplay that has worked in the past.

Answer Pi's question.

Teaser trailer was very cool, I got a new desktop thanks to smash. :)

I mean if it takes the name team fortress it has to bare some semblance of the franchise ...

That said they've had plenty of time to throw in some new ideas ... i tend to think games are made or broken on the simple things like balance rather than earth shattering great new ideas ... both of which are very difficult to nail down in meaningful ways.

Allot of the scepticism i feel is unfounded, i still think all the stuff valve has done, CS:S, DOD:S and so on still top notch games.

One thought that just occured to me...

...is volumetric flame for the Pyro's flamethrower still on the cards?

Because I always thought that'd rock. Rock like a big rocky rock rocking on an all night rock-fest.

I wouldn't expect to see everything in game.

For instance, (and perhaps this is obvious for most) I wouldn't expect to see the sniper class grimace as he squeezes the trigger *in-game*, I wouldn't expect to see the medic snap back his rubber gloves before administering a shot *in-game*, I wouldn't expect to see the scout hold his hand to his ear when he gets radio messages *in-game* and I wouldn't expect to see the engineer idly pat his wrench in the palm of his hand *in-game*.

One of the big things that annoy me in Source games: in HL2 single player, they use the facial animation system so often, and it looks fantastic.

But when it comes to multiplayer ... name one valve mod where player models actually change facial expression when firing a gun. You'd think they'd bite their teeth a little harder when firing a bloody rocket, but noooo. Just glazing into infinity, all the time. Machine gunners in DoD, the recoil is so hard, but they don't seem to feel it, ...

grr.

Do you want something else to be added to what your cpu needs to handle besides the physics when playing online? I don't.

I never claimed that they have to introduce the full facial animation system. A few basic things would do.

I cant see mp games having any value for facial animations, not only for performance reasons but how often do you look at another players mouth or your enemies in the middle of a firefight. Just would not make sense to do it.

Bundling extra games in with your primary games shows a lack of confidence in the salability of each product if sold separately. It shows they aren't that confident barebones episodes that their usual customers will buy Ep2 on its own. Imo Valve are testing the waters with Portal and TF2 and if either is a success I would expect to see them sold separately on Steam for $10-15.

I think it's a smart move on Valve's part. It allows them to jump start the TF2 player base from people who would have bought Ep2 anyway. It'll also drive up the Ep2 sales, as I'm sure there are many TF fans who didn't buy Ep1 but will definitely be handing over their money for Ep2 now.

You could very well be right that Valve will charge for a stand alone TF2 down the track... after a decent player base has built up.

I didn't buy Ep1, I'm not a single player kind of guy. The port of HL1 to source wasn't enough to interest me. I'll be buying Ep2 though, purely for Portal and TF2.

I must say this game looks good, I'd like to test the gameplay before I buy this but. I've been ripped off before and I don't want to be ripped off again.

Can't wait for FF as well. Good time to be a fortress player indeed.

I will go ahead and say what I feel will happen. It is safe to say many, Many, MANY, people first saw or heard of Half-Life because they saw someone playing TF. HL was just a bonus.

TF2:S will be the next game that brings many of you back to the root of the game you first played. Yes it will be a different look and feel but deep down we all will have fun and can go back to play the old school game if need be.

Will we be able to conc jump? Soilder jump? Some tricky questions I cant wait to find out. I honestly feel this is the game that will make other dev teams sit back and think about what they put out. Portal is just a bonus!

I seriously doubt that. If you'd used 'Counter-Strike', allright ...

Hohoho.

Ask a person on a street about HL and ask him/her about TF.

God there are some retarded people on the internet.

GET OFF THE INTERNETS

I have played hl1, hl2, hl2 epi2, cs, etc but never team fortress so did watch they trailer and this look very cool.

Was a very fun vid they have put toughter.

I never really gave a rats ass about Team Fortress. Class based multiplayer is a losing formula for me. That's all changed now! :D The only thing that I never really liked about Source is how you can just tell right away if something's made in Source. It's the textures. Almost all Source games have that... you know... Sourcey texture set. Whatev'. This looks interesting.

The only thing I care about, will it have bots?

You don't care about class based multiplayer, unless it's with bots ? :stare:

Well, CS:S had bots, but Day of Defeat:S didn't, and I imagine writing a bot for TF would be very difficult. (Every class has its role, you see).

having watched the new trailer and got in the mood for TF2, i just downloaded TFC through steam and ive got a say its kinda pissed on the parade for me, i dont think its very good tbh...i cant think of the word to describe it, im tempted to say too arcadey but its not, anyway, im not keen. I dont really like TFC it appears, i hope i get on better with TF2

Again i said many you are a small few who disagree with me. Doesnt mean i am stupid or a leroy. This new version of the game will be something new and fresh. If you dont like what you see so far CS:S is just for you.

I for one got to know about Half-Life because I read about TFC in a magazine, who were writing articles about them being in a TFC clan. After I read those articles I just wanted TFC so bad! So I bought the Game of the Year edition of Half-Life with TFC in it. Didn't enjoy it as much as I thought tho, and then I quickly learned about Counter-Strike and got hooked.

I brought half-life after seeing cs. In the end i gave away cs for TFC, SvenCoop, and NS, and for some reason, there is yet to be a Half Life 2 mod that i enjoy, and will bring me over to its evils.

I'm always willing to enjoy a SP Episode, such as Leon's, and Project 22, etc, etc, but i play them, and remove them.

Lets see what TF2:S brings, and it might be that one that converts me.

DOD Source was an enorumous departure and change of direction, actually. It broke down the barrier of point-and-click and made the game accessible to people who are smart, not just the jibbering FPS fiends that 'skill'-based games reward. You need only look at the furore in the DOD community around DODS' release to see just how different the game was.

Bundling extra games in with your primary games shows a lack of confidence in the salability of each product if sold separately.
Evidently you've missed the tidal wave of glee that has overcome every gaming community going about both Portal and TF2. If the sequel to online gaming's first hit and a quasi-casual puzzle game with FPS production values aren't at least as saleable as Ep2, they are certainly giving it a run for its money.

You can't judge TFC from where it's at today, now it's mostly just llamers and a few good honest players and of course the closed clan games. Public servers nowadays is just that a noobfest. Back in the golden days TFC was pure gold. I hope TF2 and more especially Fortress Forever can bring back some of that.

Plus I'm betting TF2 will have teleporters and I hate teleporters unless they've balanced the maps based on them.

I'll keep an eye on this and play it since I'm definently getting Episode 2 but my money's on Fortress Forever.

Yep I sure am retarted cause you dont feel the same way I do. I like the color blue does that mean Im smart?

TFC was out before CS. thus I was saying at the point many people got HL for TFC.... trying to keep it related to the topic.

What prevents you from using edit option.

Again i said many you are a small few who disagree with me.

Anyone remember when Pulp Fiction came out, and how pretty much every film mag/website couldn't stop using it as the reference/yardstick for how good/bad a film was for the next two to three years?

Pretty much the same thing occurred in the gaming community/press when half life was released back in 1998. The game sold 8 million units and won 50 Game of the year awards, and even today, 8 years on from it's release it's still considered the 3rd best game ever released on the PC (www.gamerankings.com). Only GTA:Vice City and Halflife 2 (surprise, surprise) are rated higher.

Halflife sold because it was the must play game of it's time, not because it incorporated TFC multiplayer (most people were pissing around with dial up back in 1998).

I've found a problem in the... teaser trailer.

The Demoman throws a dynamite stick which is obviously used to blow stuff up despite having the also obvious problem of it being not lighted.

Just a thought.
Can't we wait until the game is out before finding bugs? :p

For the last three this is possible as an idle first-person animation, but to put that much detail into the third-person anims is a lot of extra detail for what will undoubtedly result in a lot of extra chug and a lot fewer players.

One other thing that I don't think anyone has mentioned.
I don't agree that putting more detail into third person anims is going to create more "chug" - they already have 3rd person anims, changing them to more complex animations really doesn't add that much load in the scheme of things. Could always have an option to turn them down if it does.

I never thought about the bundling before - I always figured they're just giving us good value for money but it does smell a bit like those DVD bundles you get - you know, the 3 good films + one crap film box sets they have in Woolies and stuff. I'd agree on them not having such saleability on their own - Portal will probably be quite a small game, more suited to an indie price, TF2 will be a small MP-only game, and Episode 2 will be a short single player game. I don't think these are bad things - maybe that's just because I have a short attention span, but I think it's a good business model and I like the products :)

Seems though they've updated the engine majorly, does this mean that when TF2 and Portal are released we can expect updates to CSS and such?

I can't wait to play TF2. I want some damn gameplay shown :(
They made noises about updating Half-Life 2 and Episode 1 :)

Quote for great justice - aaaages ago there were rumours that when you spoke in game, your characters face would synch to your speech, but it never surfaced as a feature :(

Yep I sure am retarted cause you dont feel the same way I do. I like the color blue does that mean Im smart?
No, but the fact that you can't spell, don't know how to use punctuation and are failing to grasp the most basic points of forum etiquette like, say, don't double (or in fact triple) post isn't helping your "Im nt stupid lolz" argument.

I have offically changed my mind about this - it does look rather cool. The one thing I really want is for the classes to stand like they did in that video, for example, the spy with his pistol pointing in the air and held in one hand, etc...

Guys, are you capable of having a debate that's not personal?

I respectfully disagree with BlueWolf but it's his opinion and I'm not going to call him an idiot for it... it's not like he's defending creationism or anything

Sorry I was only defending my point of view. So many people double post and do not put comma(')s were they belong. So when I saw that I was called a leroy and lame for my point of view that TFC and TF2 are different and could bethe future of HL2 and was the future for HL. Again CS came after TFC so dont bash me again.

ps: Boxwars for HL was one of the best mods to be made. Ya I said it.

This site is known to allow people to express points of views. I will just keep them to myself going forward. Sorry for causing all the spell checkers and opinion haters to STAND UP.

I saw the trailer today and it looks really cool. I just want to know what those characatures look like when ragdolled!
