See if anyone else has seen this while spying, or even been an offender.

Ok, so a spy. Most powerful class in terms of damage, instakill on anyone, and a cloak to get him in position.

An example that has happened to me countless times -

2fort, i'm running down the sewers, I see a soldier+engy(or some combo) firing down to their stairs. Oh look, demo holding them up. The soldier just kept firing, so I thought hell, cloaked and ran. Of course, since the soldier kept firing, so did the demo and boom I went. Respawned, and went back down. Soldier+engy STILL their, demo still alive. I told him to back off while I deal with the demo, he told me I wouldn't be able to.

The spy in this situation could take the demo with no problem, since the demo is distracted.

Now, scouts. I've been disguised in their base or wherever near them. A scout runs past me, fires at them, and not me. Giveaway or what?! Knowing I can't fire, they should keep away. The spy can do alot more damage than a scout in someone elses base. The scout went and died, luckily I got away with it by jumping around looking like a general pyro.

Then a soldier/medic combo came running down, shot 3 players dead and got murdered by a sentry. Thats while he saw me running around behind the sentry, waiting for the chance to sap the bastard and stab the engy, something I could have easily done given a few more seconds.

TEAMS - LET THE SPIES DO THEIR WORK!!!

Anyone else seen something like this? Is it just me who thinks spies get neglected, and players seem to think they work alone, and not to help the team? Sentries are the bane of many a player, unless they realize spies can help the team tremendously and call for one. Single demos holding choke points, spies can deal with it, but no, players insist on running in and dying. Depresses me sometimes.

I'd say that is about the rant over :sniper:

I get pissed off the most when teammates (usually scouts) run up and hide right next to me while I try and infiltrate the enemy base.

I have seen both amazing teamwork and total bullshit teamwork regarding spies. A really good example would be the incredibly bullshit time we were trapped in the Spawn Point in Dustbowl by 5 Turrets, a couple of demomen and heavies. Eventually 3 people went spy, snuck through the mine zone, came round the side and disabled all of the turrets, yelling "GO GO GO!" into the mic. Then everybody charged in and after like seventeen minutes we had the first control point. :D

It took you seventeen minutes to get the first control point, AFTER you finally disabled their sentry guns?

That's not good teamwork. That's like... casting Firebolt on Jenova SYNTHESIS. Once.

No, I mean it took 17 minutes before we got co-ordinated enough to get enough people playing spy, holding back so enough people were alive, a medic had UBAR, and working together.

And consider that at least 5 of those minutes would have been of suicidal lemming charges before anybody even attempted to get some sembelence of teamwork together.

Now that you mention it, I only pay attention to spies if they call for medic. First, with the needler (because that's a trick often used by enemy spies to get me to help them), then with the health. However, I'm usually paying attention to my host du jour and the surrounding battle and am probably not going to be doing much for/with the spy. As a spy, what do you expect from a medic besides not overcharging your health (although I have had that request before. Whatever.)

I hate it when they do that... a 150%-health player without a nearby same-team Medic looks really suspicious.

Nah, i get to do my job as a spy.

THOUGH AS SAM SAID IM THE WORST SPY ON EARTH :D

Let him explian about dicks and sentries. hahaha.

Though i acctually am a really good spy.

Don't put your dick in the sentry. That is all.

Hahaha, someone died because i was a dick right?

Since Spies are normally out of view from their teammates when they do their work it really is up to the Spy to communicate what they plan to do. A Spy with a mic can be really helpful.

I like playing spy and all but their usefulness is dubious. I've played a fair amount of tf2 and one thing I've noticed that on ctf levels it seems like spys would be perfect for it but I've only ever successfully captured the flag with a scout. I suppose this is because once they have the flag they can't disguise or cloak rendering them about as effective as the ordinary house fly but this is only a point against them.

Personally I believe that if the entire team split evenly into heavy/medic they would be unstoppable.

mmmm that would be awsome.

Spies are often very good at sneaking past and capturing points/flags. I've captured many a point/flag as a spy. Once in Hydro a captured the point within the first 30seconds because their entire team went off to fight and I just cloaked past them.

As for usefulness, sappers at the right time, 2-3 backstabs at a choke point, backstab when an enemy medic is ready for uber, etc can be game changers.

When not playing the spy, if i see a spy on my team i always act as if its an enemy. It really helps the spy rather then running along shouting "here is our teams spy" ;)

That usually works until the enemy works out he is not attacking you back.

Spy should never be visible - disguised or not - anywhere near teammates. If I absolutely have to run along with them, I'll disguise as a different same-team class, cloak when the teammates start assaulting, and re-disguise elsewhere. Otherwise I'll always use a different route.

They sort of notice that you're not taking damage though.

Works better if it's just random potshots from across the map or something.
