keep recieving error CFileSystem_Steam::Init() failed: failed to find steam interface , using a retail five disk box set (trying to rid my life of steam with offline activation) any suggestions to fix this issue? (Moving out of home, no phone line)

Sorry dude, no internet = no Steam + no HL2. Offline mode will only work for a short while (about 2 weeks I believe) before Steam (and it's creators in their infinite wisdom, and American-like way of taking away your choices) will force you to try to connect to the net to at least check for updates for Steam. Yay.
