too bad its material less than a gram over a distance of 0.5 meters.

LONDON (Oct. 4) - Beaming people in Star Trek fashion is still in the realms of science fiction but physicists in Denmark have teleported information from light to matter bringing quantum communication and computing closer to reality.

The experiment involved for the first time a macroscopic atomic object containing thousands of billions of atoms. They also teleported the information a distance of half a meter but believe it can be extended further.

"Teleportation between two single atoms had been done two years ago by two teams but this was done at a distance of a fraction of a millimetre," Polzik, of the Danish National Research Foundation Center for Quantum Optics, explained.

"Our method allows teleportation to be taken over longer distances because it involves light as the carrier of entanglement," he added.

Although teleportation is associated with the science-fiction series Star Trek, no one is likely to be beamed anywhere soon.

So basically it involves using photons to entangle two particles and cause their quantum states to change, thus switching their locations. In practical terms, this technology could be used to create quantum computers, that switch cubits instantly, without any real travel time or heat. It could also mean transporting tiny bits of mater over optic cables, and eventually, as the teleportation gets more and more advanced, moving large macroscopic items over large distances.

It was only a MATTER of time..

Ahh, my puns suck. :(

But yeah, recently we are hitting great strides in science. We have this test in teleportation, then we have the machine next year to create black holes *am I right that it is black holes?*...It's too bad that by the time we figure everything awesome out, I'll be long overdue for 6 feet under..

haha, chin up cyber, it wasn't that bad.

Try using italics instead of caps, might be more effective!

Anyways....teleportation is good...

yea, that's all I have to say about that.

Simply amazing. The mention of quantum computing makes me giddy as a schoolgirl. I see this technology progressing quickly. I'll probably be dead by the time they dcan teleport small objects across a room, but it's still an exciting idea.

I read about this stuff at least 2 years ago.

I remember they teleported a section of classical music though a metal (think lead maybe) about 4 inches thick a while ago.

Yeah. Better though is the force fields around tanks now. Radars detect incoming threats and fling a mass of debris at the target to blow it up before it hits the tank...

Just think of the military implications for this!

Thats exactly what i'm worried about.

George Bush/Kim Jong Il/Osama Bin Laden + Teleport device + Nuke = Bad

D: D: D:

But, wait, I just thought up the implications for SPACE TRAVEL! :D :D :D

I guess famine wouldnt be a problem. People starving in Africa? Send them a burger with the power of SCIENCE!

Overpopulation? Send them to Africa, Austrailia, or even Anartica! :D

Wait.......

Bad idea.

No...Good idea. Give me those people, a special effects team, a film crew, and send 'em to Antarctica and I'll have you the best ****ing movie ever made. Plus population control. D:

I hear some of those kangaroos are deadly.

no u wont they'll cure old age and cancer, and maybe the common cold before they figure this stuff out

Oh right, so you know? I didn't know we'd invented the time machine already.

You better believe it!

Look at those cold dead eyes, those are a killers eyes...

Why?
If you know what you are doing with amino acids, growth hormones, enzymes, nutrients, sleep patterns, stress levels, toxins and mental techniques you can push the human body to live for many times longer than that of an average person.

I'm actually getting physically younger at the mo.

You can stay young for a long time.

Teleportation isn't a good ide. "The Fly"

I've visited an Open University teleportation laboritery a few years ago. They got a few atoms, fired lasers at them from all directions, and then used the laser to push them around the room.
Remember, using that or the method mentioned in the article could never actually 'teleport' anything meaningful.

How about replication? Need more RAM? Replicate it :D

Is your hair growing back?

I would think, that if we ever built REAL spaceships...like Battlestar Galactica/Star Trek style frigates etc...

To be able to navigate and control the ships systems etc...it would need to be a quantum computer.

The one thing that always bothered me about teleportation, what happens to the air molecules you teleport into? I imagine having your entire body suddenly full of air could cause trouble.

What would happen if the machine doing the teleporting turned off when you were half way between the two points? Where would you be?

I'll believe you when you're 150

the atoms switch positions, so the air molecules are in the exact same place you once were, and you occupy the space in which the air molecules used to exist.

Otherwise, teleportation would violate the law of conservation of mass.

These black holes are like quantum sized and last several millionths of a second long. But essentially they are black holes. I think the machine you're referring to is the Large Hadron Collider. I don't know when it's schedualed to be finished..I think sometime in 2008? Correct me if I'm wrong though.

Ohh n000es, teleportation!!! If we take a sample of material from another dimention & experiment on it will cause a resonance cascade!!!!!!!111one1111eleven111
