The trailer makes it look shitty ;(
 
I was really excited when I saw this first announced a few months ago. I saw the trailer during the super bowl and it was disappointing, but I'll wait for a better look at it before I go judging.

I desperately want it to be awesome though.

I will watch the first episode with an open heart...hoping to be blown away. Although I know I will forget about this, so could someone remind me?
 
Has anyone ever managed to make a TV show featuring dinosaurs that wasn't shit?
 
Dinosaur related movies, TV shows and games seem to be cursed for some reason. Jurassic Park is one of the only cool things ever to come out of the genre.
 
I'm actually surprised we haven't seen anything dinosaur related in the last few years.

However, the thing that I feel made Jurassic Park successful was the cast. I mean, come on, characters like Ian Malcolm and Grant and Ludlow. I'm not familiar with any of the actors in this movie, nor the writers/creator, so it's hard to gauge if it can achieve that level. If it's just people you don't give a shit about fighting dinosaurs, even the "awesome" of that is going to rub off after a while.
 
The cast was fantastic in JP, and the returning cast is the saving grace of the second two. But the way they handled the dinosaurs themselves is what sold me on all three. They werent treated as monsters that the people had to fight, they were just animals. Both in the way the people treated them, and the way they behaved. In this trailer, its hard to get a sense of this aspect, but we see a shitty CG shot of a huge dino biting at the camera while running like 120 miles an hour, so I don't have much hope.
 
I want dinosaurs to be the new zombies.

Steven Spielberg is working on it so I have a little faith.
Even though that trailer was one big pile of meh.
 
Stephen Spielberg is all over the place in terms of making good movies. Hes been a part of some really god awful stuff and some really fantastic stuff, so I can't really say it makes me feel better that he working on it.

Spielberg has made a good film in the last decade? He's all over the place in terms of quality, and he's got his names on the ****ing Transformers franchise for god's sake. Not that I'm shouting at you. I am just shouting.
 
I'm well aware that he's gone off the reservation quite a bit in the past few years but I'd say the good outweighs the bad in his case.

If someone like Michael Bay or Roland Emmerich were producing this then I'd say you have a pretty big reason to worry.

Clearly you haven't watched Jurassic Park enough if you still think dinosaurs have more in common with lizards than present day birds.
 
Edit: Goddamn it, didn't see 'enough'.

For my post, it didn't really matter. Plus, they're quite clearly reptiles, so it's sort of hard to argue that point.

Look at the half-moon shaped bones in the wrist. Its a wonder they didn't learn how to fly. *laughter* No seriously. Alright, well maybe Dinosaurs had more in common with the present day birds than they do with reptiles. Look at the pubic bone, turned backward just like a bird. And the vertebrae, hollow, just like a bird. And even the word "Raptor" means bird of prey.
 
If the dinos in this TV show have feathers I will be a very sad panda...

Actually you're wrong. All modern birds are direct descendants of dinosaurs, and in fact dinosaurs are not technically extinct because all modern birds are technically dinosaurs, if not in the colloquial sense. They aren't "quite clearly reptiles", far from it. It is theorized that they were on the whole warm-blooded. Their bone structure is far more related to avians than to reptiles, and they had feathers over their skin in many, many cases (if not most or all). The fact that the popular conception of dinosaurs doesn't include feathers is because it is a relatively newly discovered fact. Feathers are very very rare to find in fossilized form, only in the most optimal conditions are they preserved.

Just this past year, preserved dinosaur feather DNA was analyzed and compared to modern feathers to determine precisely what color the feathers were. A model shows the first ever reconstructed dinosaur complete with accurate feathers and color:

This is the most current update of what the T-Rex supposedly looked like. Can't quite imagine the color scheme. Also, the T-Rex was much more of a scavenger than a fighter, they could not run as fast as usually depicted because their thighs were so big.

 
Hah! Forgot about that one. Well, they managed to make one decent animatronic Flintstones-style comedy featuring dinosaurs, I guess that's something.

Wow that t-rex image is really messing with my childhood perceptions.
 
You guys know that it's possible to be both a reptile and the ancestor to modern birds, right?

And T-Rex probably didn't have feathers.
 
Feathered Dinos are sweet. I used to hate them as a kid, but as I get older I realize that feathered Dinosaurs probably looked way ****ing sweeter than featherless ones; they probably had sweet colors and some were probably long and exaggerated for attracting mates, which probably makes them look more badass.

It's laughable when you go to the natural history musuem and see how small they were compared to Jurassic Park. T-Rex is about half the size depicted in the film. Still massive, awesome animals though.
 
I seriously hate how they look with feathers, but in the end it doesn't really matter. The real dinos might've had featers or been smaller than depicted in movies, but if I ever draw a t-rex it would be similar to Jurrassic Park, realism can kiss my ass.
 
ITT everyone in here takes a long time listing and explaining thing I already knew and understood, with the exception of the fact that dinosaurs may actually be considered technically birds.

Think what you want, but everybody knows dinosaurs are descended from birds. Like Knnry says, it's mentioned in the first ****ing scene of J.P. It's pretty well known that many dinosaurs have feathers as well. I didn't realize they were actually considered birds, though.

No, birds are descended from dinosaurs, not the other way around. You can call dinosaurs reptiles but you can't call them birds, unless you are talking about a specific sub-group like maniraptora. Dinosauria is a big ****ing group, and many of them aren't direct forefathers to birds.
