I know! How could they ever jam more info into an article?

As long as my shoutcast Opie & Anthony station works, I don't care.

"A RUSSIAN computer security expert has predicted that a large chunk of the Internet will be shut down by terrorists tomorrow."

thats so amazingly believable.

Incidently, I just ran into this on TeamXbox forums:

Those terrorists are trying to delay the Half-Life 2 preload! Damn them!

Hey don't knock the inquirer too much. They provide a lot of real information before anybody else gets it.

You can usually pick out the false stuff (like this) from a mile away.

hehe, those terrorist newbs were already foiled by Valve. :p

Kill the internet and you'd have a global army of geeks hacking the terrorists' lives away.

And me, beating terrorists' lives away with my bare knuckles.

Did they say what terrorists they are? It better not be them pesky islamic extremists again, else i'll be helluva mad.

How would you destroy a massive chunk of the internet anyway? It's decentralized. It was made that way so an event like this would be impossible.

If it does happen it will only last for a couple hours.Everything will be slow tho, but other than that not much to worry about.

Correct. the internet is hundreds of thousands of interconnected computers, many connected directly to more than one other.

Just a quick example
inet101.gif

Given that any given isp has multiple indirect connections to any other isp or web server, you would have to either shut down every web server and router on the planet (Tens of thousands of high security computers) or every ISP (Thousands of extremley high security companys, each with 10s or even 100s of machines that would have to be shut down to stop them working)

The only possible way to destroy the internet would be a tactical nuclear strike, and you would have to destroy most of Europe and America to do it.

Rest easy folks, terrorists are good at killing a few people every couple of years, not at doing somthing intelligent, like hacking a computer to shut it down, or even shutting down thier own PC come to that.
