Completed Half Life 2 months ago and had this annoying problem all the way through that forced me to keep restarting. Been getting into it again and some of the mods and dont fancy having to put up with this again.

Every so often the textures will start to go all rainbow colours like little blocks. As I continue in the game it will get progressively worse. Even when I save a game the little thumbnail it produces will have the glitching on it. Reset the game or Laptop and its gone for sometimes a lengthy time but it always seems to re appear at some point. Sometimes it will appear within minutes of starting the game other times it could be hours.

I also found the same problem with fear. I have updated the video drivers so many times thinking each update will solve the problem. I use the omega drivers as having an advent laptop i find it hard to get the normal ati drivers updated as I dont think Advent do them.

My steup is AMD 64 3000 with 512meg ram, ati mobility 9600 with 64 meg ram.

I have played loads of other games with no problems, but HL2 and as I said fear have this problem.

Anyone else had this and found a solution ? Or does anyone know where I could get the official ATI update for my card as when you go to the ATI site it just refers you to the manufacturer and Advent isnt even listed.

GUTTED !!

Help would be very much appreciated.

I get that occasionally, I've got a 9800. I think it's just the card running a bit too hot and corrupting, but I can't back that up with facts.

Well, either you have "artifacting" which means that either the card is indeed running too hot, or your card is simply getting old (in terms of lifespan, not technology).

It could also be your RAM, though. If you have two sticks of RAM, try running the game with only one stick of RAM. If the problem persists, use the other stick of RAM. If the problem still persists, try changing your video card and if that doesn't work, try changing your RAM (Make sure you have the correct settings (FSB, type of RAM) ) !

Laptop so cant change the graphics card. Should be the right kind of ram also being a laptop.

Dont know. Strange about the overheating as sometimes it happens immidiately at start of play.

Aah! Laptop.
Even though I never played a major game like HL2 on laptops, physics tell me that the thing was never meant to be with The Big Guys.

the rainbow stuff is usually caused by overheating did you try underclocking

How would I underclock the card ? The top of the laptop where the fan is does get very hot and you can hear the fan kicking in constantly.

also umm where are you using the laptop if its on a thick surface with no airflow then it will overheat so i recommend raising it or something and you can use atitool to underclock

But underclocking too much could damage his card...

Do you have a guide that shows reliable underclocking speeds (that won't fry his card) ?

Always have a piece of wood on my lap from an old tv unit so there is a gap underneath the laptop.

Unless the card is actually faulty im at a loss. Bit of a bummer really.
