TF2 - will it actually sell?

Most people who remember Team Fortress from back in the old Quake Days know that it was THE mod to be playing. TFC also ruled the roost for the first couple of years after HL was released, in the multiplayer arena anyway.

However, do the mass public at large even know what Team Fortress is? Probably not. Furthermore, are they likely to buy a sequel to a game they have never heard of? Even more unlikely. From Valve's point of view, if Team Fortress is even in the same GENRE as it used to be, they should consider dropping the '2' from the title. Oh, and the lame 'Brotherhood of Arms' part. Just call it 'Valve's Team Fortress' or simply 'Team Fortress'.

Can anyone else think of some decent names for this supposedly standalone Valve game?

Well I don't know about anyone else but I'LL be buying it for sure! TFC is one of my top 3 favorite online games of all time. I'd pick TF2 over Hl2 if it came down to it.

Also, about the "Brotherhood of Arms" name, well it's been what 5 years now? They may have already changed the name by now.

Omg..you can't know until it's released. Stop making bs threads pls ;p

Most games that are sold are unknown until people hear about them...That shounds likea dumb comment but lets look at this. TF2 is probably more well known now, than most games coming out in 6-12 months time. Added to the the publicity it will get after Hl2 comes out. It could potentially be at E3 and perhaps even ECTS. Then there will undoubtedly be countless previews and reviews. The fact that its a sequal doesnt matter because of the hype that will be generated by magazines and the internet fanbase that already exists. As for the name, well i dunno about that. I never thought it was that bad. They may have changed it...since we dont know the "story" behind the game its difficult to say what it will be called.

i guess what i was trying to get at is the point that there was NO original game ever commercially released....so whats the point in numbering this commercial release a la a sequel

Some of the most fun I ever had online was playing TFC matches with a clan I joined. We had a hell of a time, and I was a fine engineer and pyro. If I could remember the crazy grenade switching / throwing script I wrote, I would probably go out and play again. :)

what?

Of course it will sell! Considering its age, the game still has a relativly large player base... Including myself! Add to that a lot more people to will discover and re-discover this great game!

True, and maybe they will have taken that into consideration. In fact calling it TF2 might spur people on to find the original...Although they will of course not be able to play it without hl :D

There's simply way too litlle info on TFII to make any kind of discussion regarding it's gameplay let alone even it's sales.

i dont even know what its about now. they probly changed so much and tbh it will probly be amazing with all these talented people now working at valve (dod people and cs people) they know how to make a good multiplayer game :)

TFC and CS never really caught my eye. Both games, imo, were damaging to online gameplay. All of the sudden team play was the norm and that was pretty annoying. I certainly will not be buying TF2 or CS2. =D

Damaging? I dont think so....Perhaps people got locked in the idea of 16 vs 16 team play but im not sure if i would say its damaging. Some interesting mods are floating about that dont give off much info, but you can tell they are something different in the way they play out.

That's some pretty messed up logic.

This thread might convince me to buy it.

EDIT: No it wont.

And with the STEAM subscription thing that'll be out with HL2, it'll be free, so people will probably get it anyway.

you can get tfc for free over steam w/o hl...same with dod and cs. and ricochet :D

I agree, we know nothing of TF2 right now so there is no possible way of knowing how well the game would sell.

People buy and play games based on how fun they are, and since we have no possible way of knowing how fun the game could be how could we even discuss its potential sales.

however I also like to analyze and make predictions so...

My bet is that it will have good sales simply because it is well known, and if the game ends up being really fun (which it most likely will be) then it will have very high sales.

Not really. Alot of crappy games are high sellers simply because of their license.

True but usually what seperates a best seller from a game that merely sells "well" is not the license. That was what I was trying to get at.

You just failed computer gaming history 101....

TF was a mod for QuakeWorld.

Why are people saying we don't have enough info on TF2 to make a decision about it? Never read a preview about it before? There's at least twenty on the net, and it was the talk of a lot of magazines for a long while before all the info stopped. Matter of fact, I've got a ton of magazines I own that I bought just for even the smallest snippet of TF2 info.

TFC was the first mod I really got into, the first one I ever wanted to learn all the nuances of and become a better player in. It's very dear to me. :p So even though TF2 isn't going to be the same type of game, I eagerly look forward to it.

You know why I still have an enthusiasm for the game after all the years it's been in development? There was a comment made once by Valve about how, originally, they weren't going to keep the pyro in there, but they decided to after all. The pyro kinda looks like a fireman from the concept art, but he's got two very large gas canisters on his back.
You can shoot these canisters. They will explode. He will catch fire. His friends in the proximity will catch fire. Everything will catch fire! I always picture sniping one of those poor bastards while I'm lying prone on a rock somewhere, watching his whole squad burst into flames. Then a medic will try to run in and revive them, but he/she will know that I'm watching, so they'll be weary about leaping out in the open to help.

And this was before they'd even developed the Source engine that they were talking about it. Think of it now... :E
