Thanks for spilling the beans on the location of Prince Harry in Afghanistan, thus ending his time on the front lines.

Thank you, Drudge Report. Damn pricks.

Kudos to the Biritish press for actually possessing a spine, and not printing the story.

Also, a big two-finger salute to the German and Australian leaks of the story which didn't gain the attention of the public but were still potentially damaging.

/ End rant.

Thoughts, anyone?

Damnit, does this mean there's less chance of a Royal getting shot by paramilitaries now?

I mean, ok, not MY paramilitaries but still.

whoops, I typed Iraq by mistake. Got too used to it being the definitive conflict in the middle east right now. Corrected :p

It was moronic to leak the story, as the knowledge a British royal was in Afghanistan created an increased risk to British troops.

I agree. Now Harry is getting pulled out because of Drudge Report or whatever the shit thing was. Should be ****ing shut down.

Drudge Report isn't a news reporting site, it just links to sites that have the articles themselves. And your British media? They agreed not to publish a story so long as they were bribed with photos, videos, and text of Prince Harry's day to day activities.

An Australian Web site got wind of something in January, but not enough to make it stick.

German newspaper Bild ran a gossip item on Wednesday, but again the Ministry of Defence hoped the chatter would quickly die down. Until the U.S. Drudge Report blog picked it up.

"Once Drudge had it, it went global and the agreement was basically over," the Ministry of Defence said on Friday.

In the end, it was Bild who leaked the information and broke the news embargo. Drudge broke it, too, I guess, so they're both to blame.

I'm aware of that. The fact is that they picked up the story and plastered it on their page.

Also, that would seem a tad contradictory. A site that links to news articles is still a news resporting site.

Not really. Drudge doesn't do any major stories himself.

Bill Clinton got a what-job? We didn't need to know that thanks!

Also, it's really funny how the British media has this whole holier-than-thou attitude.

I thought it was foreign media (not America) who leaked where he was?

Harry ought to join a mercenary ops if he really wants to fight. Can one resign as the Prince?

I reckon he should fight on the side of the enemy. That'd confuse everyone.

Well, this was silly.

I knew we should never have let you have your independence. You never liked our [strike]mam[/strike] monarchy!

Since most of the journalist's function is simply reporting things to the public, anyone who relays and embiggerises* things to the world can surely be classified as some kind of news source. I guess the story's out; it's irrelevant.

* that's right bitch making up words

The difference between the Drudge Report and online news sites are that news sites employ, or commission writers and/or journalists and are probably recognized legally by news licenses.

The Drudge Report, as far as I know, is just a guy linking to other stories. He can be considered a news source, but he's not bound to any lawful news embargos.

True enough! However, I would argue he is morally beholden to similar standards that journalists are - at least when it comes to what and what not to publish. And I think if he had rigorously applied the public good test which you use to establish whether a story is worth publishing, then he would not have broken this. It's pretty much useless to everyone, except it harms the guy. And look, this is ME, defending a royal. I hate royalty. I have a big poster of Oliver Cromwell over my bed and it's covered in little love hearts.

Whilst we're having a go at the yanks right now i may aswell as this... :D

I wonder how many US senators and congressmen have sons or daughter in Afghanistan or Iraq right now?

The biggest issue is increased risk of his capture; because a target like that would be huge for the cause of the enemy.

Journalists will print any story at any cost, including stories that are likely to put people's lives at stake. They'll print where a stalker victim was last seen, our military plans & actions, anything.

Oh boo hoo lama. The whole thing was obviously a PR stunt.

I for one wouldn't shed a tear if our 'hero' prince was KIA'd.

If he wanted to be a soldier, he should be on the front line, make the taliban aware of where he is too draw them out into a great battle. His troops would be inspired by a fierce 'st crispins' day speech. He would lead the charge like Henry V at Agincourt.

Alas, he is just a little girl.

...but ..Harry is in Air traffic control

Prince Harry: "Essentially I'm going to be 'TACP' which is Tactical Air Control Party which is linked in with the RAF and fast jets and supply drops and all these bits and pieces I've still yet to find out all the details of what I'll actually be doing."

Interviewer: Is that like Air Traffic Control?

"It is...

and didnt this interview "out" Harry?

If the Taliban knew he was here then everyone in his squad would be in danger.

Alas, he is just a little girl.

Why aren't you fighting then? I mean, your clearly not a "little girl" yet I fail to see you in afgahnistan kicking ass?

..to another air traffic control tower? ...really, does anyone believe an heir to the throne is any kind of danger?

He was on the front line, and he wasn't an air traffic controller, he was the officer in charge of air support for the front lines. He did a far tougher job than anyone here as ever done, so you can't call him a girl for it.

the interview is with Harry ..unless I'm missing something he himself says he was in air traffic control ..read the link. And who's calling him a "girl" ...in any event, he's not in danger, at least not like the typical grunt ..that would be stupid to put an heir to the throne in harms way

What he said was

"Essentially I'm going to be 'TACP' which is Tactical Air Control Party which is linked in with the RAF and fast jets and supply drops and all these bits and pieces I've still yet to find out all the details of what I'll actually be doing."

He said this before he went and he even said he wasn't entirely sure what he would be doing. His job was on the front lines co-ordinating air support and commanding a squad.

Solaris called him a girl, yet I doubt Solaris has ever done anything remotely as dangerous.

but you dont think he was in any real danger do you?

It's doubtful military brass would put him anywhere near the frontline for fear of public outlash if something happened to him. Generals have to answer to those leading the nation, and leaders have to answer to the public.

The area of Afghanistan under British control is quite dangerous at the moment and he was fighting there. So yes he was, if he was in a quiet place he would not have been withdrawn.

It's doubtful military brass would put him anywhere near the frontline for fear of public outlash if something happened to him. Generals have to answer to those leading the nation, and leaders have to answer to the public.

Yet the reports from journalists that visited him there and interviews of soldiers there contradict that view.
