You know boeing said "oooo..look at us..we make Antigravity..HAHAHA!!!"..Ya, well...I can buy Antigravity from my local hardware store....You know what it is?? A MAGNET!!! Antigravity is a magnet because it counteracts the force of gravity and defeats it..That's why you can lift a paper clip off the table when you put a magnet next to it. Antigravity simply means to defeat the force of gravity, where gravity doesn't mean anything anymore. Boeing however wants to use it for some sort of vehical, which means a lot of power is needed, and money will be wasted. If you ask me Antigravity will never be achieved for vehicals until a new power source is found....and right now..it's a waste of money.
 
Umm, doesn't a magnet just use magnetic powers, and not 'Antigravity'? Although it does have that cool ring to it :p

A magnet doesn't counteracts the force of gravity... A x object being attract by a magnet still interacts with the effects of the gravity. The electromagnetic force is just stronger than the gravity's, which is not eliminated because it's still there.

Like Beerdude26 said, a person being lift in the air by someone else is experiencing the effects of "antigravity"?

Antigravity is defined if it implies atomic interactions which opposes to gravity's atomic interactions. I believe that, like Anti-matter, antigravity would be the opposite of gravity. If gravity interacts with environment by its subatomic elements, here called Graviton, antigravity would imply the presence of an anti-graviton.
 
If it did counteract gravity, you could pick any metal object up from any height using just a magnet.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I was lead to believe that gravity was caused by the spinning of the earth in orbit, whereby magnetic fields were cause by the continual shifting of the earths metallic core, but hey maybe I'm wrong

Following the General relativity, any mass and energy of the universe would warp spacetime in some manner yet to be determined. Objects such as aples or planets would try to move in straight lines through spacetime, but their paths would appear to be bent by a gravitional field because spacetime is curved.

This theory was confirmed in a fashion when a British observed a slight bending of light from a star passing near the sun during an eclipse. It was direct evidence.

Electromagnetic and Gravitational forces are two different things. Sorry.
 
you know gravity is the weakest of all the forces. Thats why a simple magnet is able to lift a paperclip even though the entire world is pulling the paper clip down. Nuclear forces are the strongest, then magnetic, then gravitational. The only thing gravity has over the other 2 is range. Correct me if im wrong, but the force of gravity is proportional to the inverse of its distance squared.

The funny thing is that since gravity acts over such vast distances, i can say that Tr0n and I are physically attracted to each other :D

Actually, i think its the same
I know the force between charged particles is q1*q2/r^2
Its just we see gravitational force on a large scale (e.g. planets..) more often

Indeed, gravitional force is the only one that affects everything in the Universe, from subatomic elements to planets.

And at the atomic level gravity is pretty much negligable
So i'd say the strong and weak force are the ones that effect everything

I was pointing out the link to clarify for you how gravity is generated...

And that may not be entirely true...
After all, how much time did einstein spend trying to find a way to relate the two subjects with one law?
He obviously thought there was a blatant connection
And if you buy the string theory.. it kind of brings them into one

I've read somewhere that the Strong and the Weak forces are indeed very powerfull, but their rages don't affect a type of matter. I'll try to find the reference.

EDIT: I don't think the light is affected by those forces. However, gravity does have an effect on it.

If you provide one single theory that directly links magnetism to gravity I will gladly accept it.
There is no blatant connection between these two forces and I certainly don't buy the string theory.

I was mostly referring to electro-magnetic forces though when i mentioned distance
(Which is why i gave the elctric charge formula)
That has the same range as the gravitational force

In reply to the thread starter, because i havent read all the thread, you are incorrect. Something which goes against gravity isn't antigravity, its just resisting it. If newton threw that apple back up back in the air, it wouldn't be anti gravity, with a magnet its just keeping things up/ away as the magnetic field is repelling the object.

As far as im aware, antigravity is present in blackholes where its extremely strong, and everything works in reverse. e.g. weight, ageing and time. (That last bit is just one theory i read a year ago, very interesting though!)

Gravity is caused by an object's mass. Even if the universe was empty and you and I were standing billions of kilometers away (not spinning), we would still have gravity.
