In an attempt to lowe the amount of benchmark topics and the scrambling of info about the benchmark I've decided to dedicated this topic to the Benchmark for HL2.

When is it supposed to be released anyway?

I kind of doubt its coming out. its like the guys over at valve suddenly realised they forogt something huge, like gravity, or textures. I dunno what the deal is, but I bet it involves the french.

I think that it is supposed to be released to day to the public, that's what Newell said.
It seems rather odd though, I used to ask people at Valve, be it either via email or Steam, various questions and I would always get a response... jsut as long as it wasn't about the initial release of HL2.
Now they are unusually quiet, they won't even answer simple questions.
I'm either thinking they're planning something sneaky for today or they just won't release anything....

*Posts an image of a bench with a scribble on it*

Gabe Newell: ... How are we supposed to let people download my bench? I can only mark so many.

I just wanna hit stuff with a crowbar. I'll take sneakiness if it lets me hit stuff with a crowbar. Oh....and blow stuff up, etc.

Why does every HL2 pun (like the CROWbar) SOMEHOW involve the Simpsons?

It is so typical Valve to do shit like this, I think they will release the benchmark like a week before the game is released.

Wow... so Valve can't even hold to their benchmark date.... surprise surprise. :dozey:

I don't think it'll make it out today. Funny that we've heard anything about it since the ATi Shader Day event.

If worst comes to worst, we'll get the Half Life 1 delay fiasco again. OH NO... :flame:

Well if it makes anyone feel better you can allways watch the final fantasy 11 benchmark!.....*sighs*

laff you dorks we all new it probably wouldnt come out today. it really isnt much of anything anyway,. its just going to tell you you need to upgrade and youll flame valve for forcing you to buy new stuff

even if they HAD released it today, it would only have been released to the press and not to... us.
or at least that's what i think.

but it would most likely be leaked.

this is getting ridiculous... i mean, Valve can't seem to get a release day right, no matter what.

They have already released the benchmark, right? Anandtech and others have already run the benchmark on their own systems, so it does exist. All they have to do is make it available.

No, Spiffae! So many people got that wrong, you wouldn't believe it. It wasn't their own machines!

I WANT THE BENCHMARK TOO! BASTARDS! :flame:

Hello Gabe, there has been a large amount of confusion about the HL2 benchmark. I recall you stating that it would be released on the 30th of September. It is September 30, 8:29 PM Pacific Western Time here in the US as I am typing this e-mail message, and yet we have no benchmark. When you do release it, will it be available to the public or only to the press? And do you have a set release date if you're not going to release it today? Thanks.

/me awaits a reply... sigh

are you sure? each site gets some different numbers, they talk about their systems, and test different cards. for example, the official Valve Shader Days numbers excluded the ATI 9700 Pro. Well, Anandtech included it. There were a lot of limits to what the sites could do, but i'm 99 percent sure that they got the benchmark to use.

How would they release the benchmark through Steam? It doesn't seem likely.

Fileplanet seems like the best starting point as its the largest and most notorious downloading place.

The chance of it or ANYTHING new showing up at www.valvesoftware.com is very very small.

Vivendi won't host it....just too wierd...

So what will happen?

got proof from anandtech:

"We had to recap the issues here for those who haven't been keeping up with the situation as it unfolded over the past 24 hours, but now that you've seen what Valve has shown us, it's time to dig a bit deeper and answer some very important questions (and of course, get to our own benchmarks under Half-Life 2). "

read that carefully, and you'll see that they had the benchmark.

yes we're sure, the only benchmarks done by sites were done at the ATi shader days event, they were all done using hardware provided by ati/valve.

Each site had 90 minutes to perform tests. They could bring their own graphics cards and decide what settings they wanted to use for each test, but that was it. They never got to touch the keyboard.

nope, they dont have it, they got to run their own benchmarks at the event, they didnt get given the benchmark.

some of the sites talk about the ati provided hardware not providing much variety to test on and such also.

no, they didnt bring their own videocards, all the hardware was provided at the event, they had two pc's with nvidia cards and two with ati cards.

Due to time constraints, ATI limited reviewers to 90-minute benchmarking sessions with Half-Life 2. Each benchmarking run at a given resolution consisted of three separate demos, techdemo, bugbait, and e3_c17_02, so one run could take 20 minutes or more on slower hardware. Because of this, we teamed up with Dave Baumann of Beyond3D, Lars of Tom’s Hardware, and Bob Colayco from GameSpot, pooling all of our numbers together so we could bring you results at multiple resolutions, rendering modes, and with eye candy features such as AA enabled.

You're wrong:

Since we also brought a GeForce FX 5600 Ultra (Flipchip) card with us, we are also able to show performance numbers with that card.
At least one other site reported that they had performed tests on their own card too.
