I'm fine with dropping it now you know what you did was wrong and you've promised not to do it again.

Insid: I apologies on behalf of myself & crabcakes for that intrusion on your thread, I doubt the "problem" will happen again

Now then, back on topic, have you got any other images like this one that you've done? Be cool to see some others of this style.

1. im not trying to claim it as my own. i just added something i thought would look cool.

2. im making no money with it.....so i can edit as i see fit.....

i can take a coke logo and edit that.......

it would be pretty ovbious i didnt make it.

...and its pretty ovbious i didnt make this.......

i dont need your permission to do anything, and i dont apoligise.

sorry if i sound like a dick.

if i started a new thread saying "hey check this out" .........then you can get pissed at me.

Sorry to dig this up, but reading this really just really made me mad. I don't care if it is legal or not legal, it's just not nice to edit someone elses artwork without permission. People hide behind the law way too much. You know, your not dealing with just some faceless company here or something. This is a real person who has pride in their work and you basically stole it from them in a way. Again I don't care if what you did was illegal, it's just human decency to be considerate of others and ask permission first, which is pretty easy to do.

Now if you had said right away: "oops, sorry about that, didn't realize you would be offended" I would have absolutely no problem with that. We all make mistakes now and then, and it would be no big deal. But you have a real piss poor attitude about the whole thing, which makes you look like a real jerk.

Maybe you were just were having a bad day or something, which is still a poor excuse, but I realize it happens sometimes. But I sincerely hope you have a kinder and more considerate attitude in real life. A kind word and an apology (sincere or not) can go a long way you know. Feel free to bash me, but I truly think you could learn something from this.

And Insid, I apologize for just prolonging this argument, but I just felt I had to write something in response. I know exactly what you mean when you say your art is your "heart and soul".

Participants in such competitions are by definition saying its ok to alter their artwork. Crab didn't bother asking me and that is where the problem came from.

I don't see the original artists giving their consent...

I see Gordon and Alyx at the top of this page... but I don't see where the person who drew them is credited!

hmmm...

At least someone appreciates that. I'm sure all the real artists around here know exactly it means.

Its pretty much a given. You are entering the contest knowing how it works. If there is a violation somewhere then it is up to the artist being violated to bring it to the attention of others. Such as I did.

Once again this isn't about "credit". Crab never took credit for my work.

I wasn't going to reply to this but I need to clear it up

Insid's work was for himself

Freeman and Alyx were for Valve for HL2, the individual artist is working for a company, not for himself, the guy or girl responsible for those images does not own them or their copyright, Valve do, thats how it works.

Also Gabe regularly visits this forum, he knows this site well and if he had a problem with them he would have asked for their removal months ago. It's likely, though I wasn't around at the time, that whoever designed this site would have asked Valve for permission to use the above images in that way.

I hope that clears it up for you.

Now then, back on topic eh? cool :) more pics please Insid! :)

The original artists arn't the ones entering though, so i'm not sure what your point is. Other peoples work is being entered, but with our own forum users editing... similar to how crabcake edited your work. THEY are the ones entering...

So you've never ever photoshopped someone elses work for a laugh? Cause all the photoshop competition competitors certainly have... thats the whole point... photoshopping other peoples images for fun.

He said he was just screwing around, having a laugh... which we've all done. So your only argument would be that he's posted it, but altered it, which you don't agree with. Fair enough if he'd posted it anywhere else... but the fact it was in this thread shows he was just messing around and decided to show people. No harm has come from it... It's not like anyone would think it was ur original as he made it blatently obvious.

Phate-

The "only" argument I have ever been putting forth is that you should ask someone before altering (even just for fun) something they have put their "heart and soul" into. I never claimed or insinuated he was taking any credit or that any real harm was done. Only that he should have asked first and that he was an asshat afterwards for being a dick about it. As far as how the contests work, I mistook them with the pixel wars over at teamphotoshop.com sorry. Still though, if you people are taking other peoples art and altering it without asking them then I would disagree with it to a certain exent, it would depend on what the pieces were. Is it just some random photo from someone else or a piece of work they poured countless hours in to get just as they wanted it? I havent checked out any of the contests here so I dont know and/or really care. Crabcake isnt being graded on a curve here, what other people did with other peoples artwork isn't relevant to the situation. This is my art and my beef with him. There wouldnt have been this big of a prob if he had just not acted like the ****tard he did and just said "oops my bad, wont happen again"

Fenric-

I will post more images when I get them uploaded to my friends server. If you want to see more of my work there are some very old (and compared to what I do now not nearly as good) works of my at this site. I am Marc Nolan.

LOL. Welcome to the world of graphic-arts buddy ;). That's like rule number one, and you got an F on today's lesson.

This thread is fun to read,

Wasn't there a law set that anything put on the internet was instantly copyrighted to the original artist?

Everything you draw automatically gains copyright rights you don't have to mention it anywhere, though it is recommended.

@insid(marc)......... i dont think i did anything wrong.....but that doesnt mean it was or wasnt wrong ......only from my point of view.

I apologize for being a jerk. I should have asked before I posted that edited image.

Ive never had a problem with people taking something i made....and messing around with it....... but again that doesnt make what i did right.

I can see what i did bothers you guys....... so i sincerely apologize and hope there are no hard feelings.

Thank you and there are no hard feelings over here.

I think once you get into art and begin putting more of yourself (and time) into it, you will understand more how personal someones are can be to them and how alteration can be akin to molestation.

I do like the idea of the future city and I am working up another space scene that might have one, if that interest you.

I would want space stations and flying vessels so this would take a lot of time. Of course I would want more asteriods, i love them. Perhaps a mining outpost on a larger one? If everyone wants to wait another half year. :cheese:

Nice response. I'm sure it's much appreciated. Sorry I kind of blasted you. That was a great thing to say, and you seem like a nice guy.

I am thoroughly impressed Insid. :) Show this off at www.Cgtalk.com

I am a professional artist, and I must agree with what the vast majority has said here. It is generally unkosher to alter a person’s work in any way. While this may make little sense to some of you, let me place this in a different context.

Lets say I took a picture of your Mom, or somehow acquired a photograph of your Mom. Now lets say I applied my ‘elite photoshop skills’ and decided to make your mom 60 pounds heavier with pimples and warts all over the place. Hey, the fun isn’t over yet. Now, we modify the picture so your mom is nude. So the picture is pretty disgusting so far, but for an added touch, we add nude Bill Clinton to the photograph.

While that above description may be rather appealing to some perverted sicko somewhere on the planet, but chances are that would be incredibly offensive.

While the case is rarely that extreme, the same standards apply to art. The only time I would actually modify a picture someone else created was if I (1) had permission or (2) the person asked for suggestions. Now if the person asked for suggestions, generally the modifications would merely be colored arrows, curved lines, or circles since being at a distance I cannot point to what I am talking about. To defile someone’s artwork, especially if they have spent months working on the project, is something that you do not touch. To actually modify another person's art work can come across as "Ha, Ha..I improved your art. I'm better than you"

Wow, a forum argument that was actually solved without murder. I think my faith in humanity just increased 1 point. Hurray.
