I want the ape to actually speak in a upper-class British accent and sip tea.

People can go all "Monkeys are cute" and all that rubbish, but if I ever see one coming at me that mother****er is going down. I'm not going through any Planet of the Apes bullshit

thats not so new.I have see experiments like those before

Then Kanzi took control of the conversation and pressed the symbol for "Surprise!"

Needless to say, I was quite surprised, having never actually spoken to an ape before.

But Kanzi was pointing to a box of candy that I was sitting near. That is the surprise that he wanted.
Shit... not only can they speak, but they want our candy. Our f*cking candy!

Let's kill these hairy little bastards before it gets out of control.

Just don't let them know about our jobs, or our women.

But do they actually understand the language? Or do they just link certain events together like a chicken pressing a button to receive food? The chicken just associates the button with food, but has no greater contextual understanding. So were these apes brought up from their childhood with associating the sound of a person saying 'egg' with pressing a certain button, or do they show a greater understanding of language and do they use the words they know to form completely new sentences?

A thought experiment on that subject is the Chinese Room. Just because you can parse language doesn't mean you understand it.

I admit the video made it seem as if they merely recognised the sound of words and pressed symbols accordingly.

They seem to be able to do it on a grand scale....dealing with thousands of images and materials. The monkey actually noticed that he was suprised and responded accordingly.

Whenever there's a monkey month or week on National Geographic, make sure you watch the documentaries about this kind of thing. In the documentary, the human asks "How are you feeling?" and the ape responds with "I would like to go outside" or "I would like a banana". If asked if she wants something to eat or drink, the ape will reply with "Tea, please" and the like. Once, the human only gave tea but the ape wanted biscuits aswell. The human moved on to another question, but the ape persisted and said "The biscuits too".

Really daft to watch, but absolutely marvellous.

Here are some videos from their site
http://www.greatapetrust.org./media/video-research-savagerumbaugh.php

it appears that they do indeed understand context. And the ape clearly shows distress when she knows she has made a mistake

The toolmaking is especially fascinating. The ape makes a flint knife and uses it to cut through a rope.

EDIT: wow in one of the videos the researcher tricked the ape by placing cabbage in the machine in place of M&Ms.

The ape typed: "Question, you put food in machine?"
He replied : "Yes, food in machine."
The ape went on: "Cabbage in machine. Question? You put cabbage in machine?"
He replied: "Yes, cabbage in machine."
Ape: "Take food out of machine."
and he did so.

Amazing.

That's such a great style of speaking.

Dinner is served?
Yes.
You serve brussel sprouts for dinner?
Yes.
Remove brussel sprouts from plate.

Seeing a chimp chew bubblegum is awesome

We must kill them before it's too late.

Seriously, this is pretty awesome. I wonder what they think about death.
