The combine scanners, could of been capable of defending themselves.

I was just reading that half life 2 book that came with the collecters edition again.
Anyway, i was looking at concept art of the scanner. (page 92)
The concept artist made notes like this.
"Iris shrinks when pissed"

There is also a line poining to the little spikes on the side saying "pops out on borth sides, spokes expand fires from this"

I like the scanners not attacking though anyway. :dozey:

Just another thing that was cut. :p

[Edit]

Still looking through the book, i was just wondering why the concept art of the combine alien creatures were holding things like spears, axes, shields, whips and bows?

I think it should have at least zapped you with electric prongs. Should have had same effect as the stun baton.

Theres animation and code for it to shoot guns and perform a suicide dive when its nearly dead, I dont think it fully made it in though.

Whats the point of taking your picture with a flash?

Wouldn't something real high tech use digital video or something? Or infrared.. nightvision.. etc.. or zoom in from far as hell and take a picture..

it would've been nice for them to have some sort of defensive/offensive mechanism to do harm to gordon, but the flash is a nice subtle way of disorienting and blinding you ESPECIALLY in the heat of battle (like when you gotta destroy that strider and the scanners keep buggin you).

Thought the camera flash was typical of a camera and even of a digital camera. The blinding is just a consequence, have any of you ever had a picture taken before? It blinds you momentarily.

You can use a camera without a flash, but that requires longer exposure times, and results in blurry vision when someone is on the run. Nightvision, well that's only in low colour and is distorted I believe.
I think the combine want clear pictures when they catalogue their suspects, and they want police to be able to respond immediately when a scanner takes a picture.

But they have other high tech stuff... like flying metallic robots (scanners, manhack) so why their camera has to be original?...

maybe the flash is used as something 'familiar' letting us know WTF the scanner is actually doing.

Yeah I agree. And to test out their new camera flash feature in the source engine :borg:

Imagine if it had a piercingly loud alarm to go with that annoying flash. It would blind and stun you then set off an alarm that draws near by cps.

Anyone have any answers?
Maybe i should make a new thread...

Well, they are only scanners... that scans the area for intruders or if something is going on. They're not made for fighting!
