The Crossing; the long awaited new big title in Valve's publishing line up, developed by Arkane Studios - Might and Magic. Many have asked the question what exactly and how exactly will this Crossplayer will work. [br]1UP have released an interview from the coming February Issue of Games for Windows with many of the top notch people from Arkane Studios. The interview, matched with a short video from Arkane Studios clears over the bumps and confusing aspects of this new gaming style; As well as some lovely Eye Candy and a few glimpses of In-Game action.[br]

[br]To quote any section of this interview would leave another equally important section un-covered so please read the article and Interview here and watch the purely Game play Video here but to clear all final confusion watch The Crossing section of the 1UP show.

Wow, that will work really well if the team balancing between the elites and normal players goes well.

Sounds awesome. Can't wait.

When's it out? Next year, sometime, I reckon...

So... how does the story work? What are the characters? Are there setpieces? Is this an MMOFPS? This is confusing.

Read / Watch it about 3 times and it'll make sense...

The crossplayer thing sounds slightly complicated (and I really hope it doesn't destroy some of the atmosphere) - but the setting looks wonderful.

Two realities, influencing each other - before finally crossing...

Man this looks amasing. That trailer reminds me of when I first saw a video with combat in it from Dark Messiah. Cant wait for this!

This game's already moved to my "Definite Watch" list. This crossplay idea is really taking FPS into a new area, a game with a multiplayer narrative. Things Arkane is putting forth like coop, human-controlled NPCs, branching storylines for the two factions, it's really amazing stuff.

It's incredible to think that you're going to be playing a game where the enemies out there aren't just mindless AI running code that tells them what to do, instead you're actually going up against players whose goal is to impede your progress through the story. In the case of IBAT vs. Templars, it sounds like you're actually going to be fighting Elites whose advancement through the story requires them to stop you. And the idea that these people could be friends that you've hooked up with, and the game remembers that and puts you up against them, that's just awesome.

I also like the fact that in that interview from 1UP they were discussing how far they could go with it, making it an RPG and having player hubs and all these things, but it sounded like they're not going to pursue that route and instead will concentrate only on the core mechanics. No sense adding unnecessary complication or functionality to a game when it doesn't need it, and sometimes developers lose sight of that.

Really looking forward to this one. So many good games coming out from Valve and Valve's partners this year.

Oooh... me wants!

Requirements and release date pls :> And MOAR movies. ;]

Damn, looks great... the graphics look amazing for the Source engine.

how come people always release stupid screenshots. not dissing the graphics, but man those screenies suck. well, even the graphics are meh.

companies need to start releasing screenshots like crytek is. making sure theres great angles, they show closeups of the characters etc. those look like mod shots, not shots from a pro developer (strictly talking screenshot composition not content)

screenshots are leet though

Story sounds interesting, so does tabbing a man in the chest just to watch him die.

I've read your post twice now, and I still don't see the logic.

Do you do this on purpose?

So what happens if nobody plays it, maybe a while after release and nobody is playing skirmishes? Will it just somehow use AI instead?

Stealing a comment of mine from me blog-beast - there's an interesting section in the interview from Viktor Antonov.

"The way that's gonna work out is you'll go to church, and when you exit that church, everything will look the same but slightly different. We're going to revisit the same exact areas, twisted."

I've spotted two distant, real-world churches in the trailer. The world closer to ours, Sacre Coeur:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sacre_Coeur

... And in the more distant world, the ~1260 Notre Dame:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Notre_Dame_de_Paris

I'm wondering if the inclusion of these landmarks is deliberate.

Innovation! Finally!

Holy crap this is going to be great. Good to see there are some fine minds out there in the industry working away. (while the rest sleeps)

DOES NOT COMPUTE
YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN -_-

Also Cargo I wouldn't be surprised if they deliberately include architectural landmarks. This is Paris after all, and what'd be the point of naming a city if it didn't feature things that city is known for?

The concept sounds pretty cool and definitely innovative.

I really like the idea of a large MP game taking place where the SP player is thrown into the middle of.

If they do this right, this could be really cool.

The argument behind the gameplay is solid enough that ingame AI has yet to really behave in a challenging manner vs people, so why not use people instead, but whether they can actually successfully implement it is another thing entirely. People do make better opponents without a doubt, but people also make aimbots, wallhacks and speedhacks, exploit map weaknesses, go on team kill rampages, spray Porn tags everywhere, etc etc. Bots are a little more reliable in that respect, plus they aren't likely to crash randomly. Given all of the previous are still common place in most online FPS experiences....:|

And you can script enemies to appear when and where you want to. As well as having AI soldiers to guard an area when they dont know where the player are. I dont see playing guards stand around waiting for the story player to come rape them. But if they can really manage to pull it off it could be tons of fun.

It's a different way to play the game, but is it wanted? Too hard to make a judgment without playing it first, but I can't stop having my doubts.

This sounds like a really cool concept... both coop story and crazy-TDM. Be interesting to see if they pull it off or not.

oops meant the video was leet

I'll never with the special olympics with simple mistakes like that:bounce:

The graphics are awful. And it being from the makers of Dark Messiah, I will definatly pass.

Ill be happy aslong as Kuju arn't hired to balls up another game
