The events of tonight discussion

I'm glad I wasn't around hehe, I would really hate to have the game spoiled so close to release =)

Hence my withdrawl from this community for a few days, effective, now.

I fail to see the logic behind that decision, but whatever makes you happy.

Anyone can go into IRC and claim that the spoiler link is a gold announcement or release date confirmation, and people start clicking frantically without realising.

i don't know how much IRC means to pple here...especially in particular, the HL2 channel.. but as soon as heard about these scripts spreading through IRC, i just stopped using IRC.

i mean for me its not a huge sacrifice because i don't use it perhaps as much as some of u here do but its a sacrifice im willing to make...at least until HL2 is released.. and who knows after that? perhaps i'll be occupied playing HL2 and not visit this place as much.

but anyway...this a solution tho i dunno if its something some of u would consider.

Luckily, I don't even go into the hl2.net IRC channel. I don't like it in there much anyway, too crowded.

I don't know if this has much to do with this attack, but I got an attack on my firewall last night, here are the details...

MSSQL_Null_Packet_DoS Attack

Intruder: www.halflife2.net(69.28.175.116)(http(80))

OrigID: LLNW
Cust Name: Limelight Networks, LLC
Street: 2220 W. 14th Street
City: Tempe
State: Arizona
Country: US

If the hijacking script is a php one, there's no way to get to it. If it's javascript I suppose it's possible, but you'd still have to access the page first.

Anyway, are the spoilers only posted in the HL2 discussion forum, or are the other ones affected as well?

I looked at Norton and it says it can block scripts, so I'm guessing none of you have virus protection... or... it doesn't work. :)

Doesn't VBulletin have a word filter that the Admin' can set up? You could put all the bad links in there and they wouldn't show up, thus stopping the same known script happening again. :)

I don't think Norton blocks these kinds of scripts. They don't attack your pc either, they simply read info from a cookie which I don't think is reason enough for antivirus apps to block it.

There is a word filter, and as far as I know the spoiler links do get added to it, but the real problem is on IRC. Any lamer can just drop in and paste a link, telling people it's a game or whatever. Even if you make some sort of black/whitelist system so anyone pasting certain sites gets immediately kicked, the link would still be on screen for all 150-250 people in the channel. Quite a sizeable chance someone with a hl2.net account still clicks it.

Haven't the Champions stopped this crap yet? Surely we can sue their asses.
It wasn't them, they don't even know how to write things like this, their plan involved getting individual people to sign up here and start posting spoiler threads before they get banned.
