The Evolution Of Bioshock.

Yeah the actual concept/artwork book is online for download via the main Bioshock site and other hosts. It's a really good book, some really cool concepts in it.

The Splicers and Big Daddies were cool but I was kind of hoping some of the ****ed up creatures you see in the book would of actually made it to the final game. Imagine the Spider Splicers but as deformed, groetesque spider-like mutants.

qft, but tbh i've seen alot af game art and the art is always better than the actual end product in game.

Cool article.

Nah. They certainly could have added a couple more enemy types, but I liked the overall look of them. Whenever I see weird or demonic creatures in horror type games now, my reaction is usually "oh, so that's the spider creature", or "so that's the zombie guy" etc. It's always the same sort of archetypes and it's become kind of cliche. Bioshock was unique because it made human-looking characters scary (or atleast creepy in some cases). I don't think anything more monstrous than the Bid Daddy would have fit with the atmosphere they were trying to get across.

Oh yeah, the Splicers kicked ass as an enemy but after a while were they really much of a threat, or a scare? I didn't find them creepy at all in lit-up places, it was the scenes when they snuck up on me ala Fort Frolic or the Medical Pavillion which really got me.

Some of the Splicers were pretty messed up in the features department, but I think with all this open box science going on around Rapture I would of liked tp have seen things a little more messed up than some lumpy chicken pox on someones face. Perhaps not as monstrous as some of the concepts, but maybe something that did actually look truely repulsive and shocking when it got all up in yo' face.
