Just to let you know, a lot of people think its just the single player game, but right on the box it says "Full Version includes single and multiplayer modes"

The coupon card has a scratch thing on the back for the CD key, i didnt scratch it yet though.

You get a 9600 or a 9800 and how much do you like the new card?

the 9800.

Its a really nice card and looks wicked cool with the new fan design.

no problems so far, and runs games perfect.

Even I think ATi/Valve owes the buyers of the XT's some clear info on the releasedate. Don't think that info will come today though.
But that coupon is useless when it does come out in april.
I was planning to buy a 9600XT, but I got a great deal for a 9700 pro.

I still can't decide on a 9800xt or 9800pro. I mean, their relativly the same thing aren't they? Only the xt has something regarding overclocking or something. the 9800pro is cheaper too, and being as i don't overclock anything I'm not fussed at missing extra stuff to do with that.

Anyone able to explain clearly the actual differences between the two? I get bogged down with technobabble on review sites :(

ok i dont understand on thing... why ati added a cuopon that you can get hl2 free but you will have to wait untill april 2004?

Well you cant blame ATI for this. They had a product that was going to "partner" with another product to hopefully be out at the same time. One of the partners could not come through. So instead of delaying their product ATI decided to do the next best thing. Get theirs out and give a "rain check" for the game....

What made you buy the 9800XT and not wait a couple of more months and get the R420?

You should buy the AIW Pro. Great card, with the most awesome features I've seen. Go here > http://ati.com/products/radeon9800/aiw9800pro/features.html

Transparency is really, really cool.

I will only consider ATI products if their Linux support ever gets up to snuff. For now, nVidia is the clear leader in this area, so I'll stick with them.

hm but i still dont understand why people should wait so long for the game... i think that the game will be out soon

i begin to wonder how much valve told ATI, especially about the release date. i doubt ati would make a deal with valve if they knew hl2 was comming out in april or even 04. makes me a little suspecious when people say things like "omg hl2 was never supposed to come out in 03"

ahhh now I think I understand your question. Correct me if I am wrong. You are thinking if the game comes out 01/04 the ATI users will still have to wait till 04/04? I believe when the game is "ready" you can get it then taking into consideration the shipping. (4 weeks?) Also if that is a "product key" behind that "scratch" surface you may be able to DL it via Steam but do not quote me.

i just want to tell that the game will be out soon and the ATI users will be able to get the game FREE :) because if the game should be released at 2004 ati should never wanted to make a deal with valve heh

Essentially, the 9800XT is an overclocked 9800Pro. ATi reworked the 9800Pro's core for a more efficient heat transfer which let it run higher clock speeds at around the same temperature.

The 9800XT also has a feature called "Overdrive", which lets laymen users overclock their cards without risk of damaging it. Overdrive is a combination of the superior stock cooling, a built in temperature probe, and software included in the Cat 3.8s. It overclocks the cards core and memory dynamically till it hits a certain temperature. Once it hits that temperature, it throttles back the clock speeds to cool the chip. Basically, the better your computer case's cooling, the higher speeds you'll get.

The difference in framerate between the XT and the Pro is around 5-10fps (with Overdrive enabled). Both cards overclock to the same point on custom cooling. I've got my 9800pro running 460/370, which is well above the cut off of the XT's Overdrive.

Personally, I think the XT is an extreme waste of money, even with the coupon. But I'm an overclocker, so I'm a little biast.

youll get HL2 free whenever the game is released. if HL2 comes out in novemeber youll get it free then, same with december. and also with april of 2004.

poeple with the free voucher dont have to wait untilapril 04 regardless of when it comes out

Yeah.. I like my little card. I can type on this Forum, as I am now, while watching Sleepy Hollow - in Transparency, officially called "THRUVIEW," mode. I also enjoy recording my Anime to my HDD, which I can then burn to a VCD. And if I really wanted to, I could do that while I watched something else...thanks to being able to record one channel, while watching another. Cool, eh?

it'll be more than a "couple" of months, heh heh, also if you live life waiting for the next best card then you're going to be waiting forever, there is always something coming down the line that you can say "hey why dont i wait for xx to come out" but then when "xx" comes out theres "xxx"..and it goes on and on.

You only used that analogy so you could say XXX, without looking pervish, didn't you? J/K -I agree, you shouldn't wait for the next best thing. Grab on to what's the best, right now, and push it to the limits. I know lots of people that say "Well, this will be out soon...," but they never follow through, or they keep upgrading when every new thing comes out - which takes a big bite out of their wallet.

We all know the story of the next best thing. I was actually more interested what card the 9800xt would be replacing and why. As it looks now the r420 will be around when HL2 will be released. Also I'm just a curious person that's waiting for the r420 :cheese:

ASUS Roadmap

I just got done reading some of the, Info from valve only thread, and an email on there says that the voucher gives you and id so that you may d/l hl2 via steam. Now with that being said I am on 56k b/c nothing else is provided here, so I was planning on getting a 9600XT but now that i see this info i dont want to have to try and d/l HL2 it'll take years. Id liek to get HL2 b4 HL 3 comes out.... ya know?

yeah I used to watch TV via the TV tuner on the old AIWpro card, the one with a massive....... 8mb ;) ATI never released working drivers for those features for OS' past win95, so ended up just buying a bigger TV that I've got sat here now, with monty python on.. oh dear :)

looking forward to getting an ATI card now, I'll see how things may change but I just might go for the 9800pro, don't see much of a reason not to really, sure can't live with my GF4 anymore thats for sure :D

Go to review sites.

Skip technobabble.

Look at graphs of performance, particularly in games you care about.

Read the conclusion if you feel like it.

Basically, I'll save you the effort: 9800xt is max 10% better than 9800pro, and that is in somewhat rare occasions.

The price difference is $200, so unless your system costs $2000+... it's in theory not worth getting until the price comes down (maybe a good price in 4+ months).

Um yeah in conclusion I wouldn't touch it with a fourty foot pole for 4 months. But if money is no object ... ^_^

Is he joking? I hope he's joking, if not, some people's stupidity never ceases to amaze me.

Just for those that don't know (and I wasn't sure if Ghost was saying otherwise) but you don't need the All In Wonder 9800 for Thruview, it's on all recent ATI cards, like my 9700 Pro, great little feature. I so want an AIW 9800 Pro for the all the multimedia capabilities though.. My old AIW Radeon 32 meg card was top notch, heh. Poor outdated little thing.

you think yours is outdated? Im struggling along on my poor little GeForce 2... :(
