After nine prototypes Martin Aircraft have an accurate expectation for how much a jetpack will cost, and suggest that at $86,000 it is pitched at the level of a high-end car. As sales and production volume increase they expect this to drop to the price of a mid-range car. A 10% deposit buys you a production slot for 12 months hence; progress payments are made during manufacture with final payment due on delivery.

And when will I be able drive it to work? Again it's a waiting game as currently air traffic control technology is not yet advanced enough to cope with jetpacks, but the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is developing "highways in the sky" technology - 3D highways based on GPS tracks.

oh god flying to work would be so awesome!!! I'm starting a jetpack collection jar

Its a helicopter not a jetpack, it uses rotor blades for lift. Still pretty cool.

Looks like a Hunter-Killer.

tell that to the manufacturer: Martin Jetpack

haha it seems someone already brought this up:

Martin Jetpack website said:
So why call our device a "Jetpack"

Well, by both common usage and science it is a jet. We already have jet ski and jet boat. I do not believe that an aviation engineer will be able to convince all those owners to start calling their devices a "water pump propelled boat".

In the end we found that 95% plus of people call it a jetpack when they see it, so why fight that ?

If you have a very narrow view of what a "true jetpack" is (i.e. that it is a pure jet) then none have ever been built. The closest would have been the Bell jet belt, but again this was not a "true jet", it was bypass ratio gas turbine powered. In fact I cannot think of any "true jets" in the GA industry, most are Fanjets.

Perhaps now you see that the "correct answer" is far more complicated and debatable, so much so that normally it is not worth even starting the discussion, because the "correct" answer relates to opinion not fact.

How I've longed for this day!

Probably should have started saving up for one earlier...

Except that when a car bumps you on the road you get a few paint scratches, do that 500 feet in the air and you end up a red spot on the pavement.

With any luck you won't be a red spot on the pavement. All of your fuel will ignite and you'll be a black spot.

That gizmondo article confused me, it actually uses turbofans, so it's more like a giant leaf blower than a helicopter. So it is technically a jet.

There is always risk associated with flying so Martin Aircraft has been careful to equip the pack with redundant systems that will take over in the event that the main system goes down. If a crash-landing is required, a pilot-operated toggle will rapidly fire a small amount of propellant deploying a ballistic parachute (similar to a car airbag) which will allow the pilot and jetpack to descend together. It also has an impact-absorbing carriage, patented fan jet technology and 100 hours engine TBO (Time Between Overhaul). Small vertical take-off and landing aircraft (VTOL) are not subject to the same limitations as other helicopters and fixed wing aircrafts but Martin Aircraft have built it to comply with ultralight regulations and therefore suggest it as at least as safe to operate,

I'm not saying it's safe but they wouldnt go commercial unless they've covered their asses against liability claims

I just know that as soon as Joe public can afford them I'll be stuck in jetpack jams on the way to work. And there is no way I'm paying 'air tax' Mr Brown.

Jetpack Jams...

Jetpack Jams...

First ever jetpack concert!

jetpack porn, make it happen

That is so cool! I will need to change my pants the first time I'm driving along and see one of those flying by.

Very cool. Hope you can download different engine tones, i'm not into electro mood synth concerto no.9 like that guy had.

PS - why the flaming heck didn't they build a full on pilot shell instead of leaving the idiot hanging by his pants like some clip on attachment? bloody half assed designers

Is it ironic that we were all supposed to be flying jet packs in the first decade of the 2000's and this comes out in 2010?

It's beautiful. It's just so beautiful.

$86k isn't a lot of money for a jetpack. In fact it's ridiculously affordable...

Ok, I've decided. All my extra income goes toward a jetpack. See you in the sky in a couple years, bros.

I'll wait for the second version. 30 Min's of direct flight is better than most I suppose but still it's not perfect.

This scares the hell out of me...the vast majority of people with cars can barely operate 2 dimensions of travel...with 3 dimensions, there will be a massive reduction in population once this becomes mainstream...

Who wants to play Sky paintball with me??

also I do like solid ground but we were born to fly

Quittich. Finally we can play Quittich.

Jetpack is quite cool, i'd still prefer a flying car though... that can travel back in time as well. Is that too much to ask? It is the year 2010 after all.

wow, if i could travel over water with this...it'll totally be practical..

Really? You could just get an inflatable raft for $5. Or just grab a log and kick.

As a matter of fact, you can just swim.

I think the only people interested in this will be police forces.
