The future is here!

Its prolly really expensive :/
And the image doesnt look very good
And will prolly take thirty years to become usefull in everyday life

Still looks neat though.

I dont see how the image would ever be that clear or sharp- you NEED a physical surface bouncing off more light than it passes to get a clear image.

Did you guys read it all?

Heliodisplays are available in projecting image sizes from 22 to 42 inches (diagonal), and is available with interactive features. IO2 Technology's website (http://www.io2technology.com), which has Heliodisplay(TM) units available for direct purchase, demonstrates how a user can move the image of a watch in mid-air with their finger. Instead of a mouse, a viewer uses their hand (no special glove needed) to move an image, or a finger to move the cursor.
That's insane.

That's awesome.

[shells out $3000 for it, only to be turned down by friends]

If it's not capable of this i'm not imperssed.

Oh shit....companies are going to take this and pollute the skies with ads...**** **** ****!!!
NOoooOOOOoOOOOOOOO!!!!

Sky-ads must be made illegal! :sniper:

Anyway...this is kinda useless until it turns into full 3D picture filling up your whole living room :D

No more shoddy 2D projections of Gail Porter's arse on the Houses of Parliament! :O

Help me, Obi-wan Kenobi, you're my only hope.

Wow a hologram machine. I'm not impressed. My friend's cousin has a hologram machine that you can put any object into it and it creates a 3D display of it above it.

Wow, Took them long enough.
Like all new technology, they have the technology for 50 years, and put it on the market when they feel they have fine-tuned it. But seriously, it would be pointless without the surroundings being dark, otherwise you can see the things in the background

I heard about them. I think they're only small (About the size of a strawberry)
Correct me if I'm wrong though.

So you can have a jolly good time watching that object sitting there doing nothing. Unless of course you have a miniature cast of your favourite tv programme to place in it? :p

It only fits things about the size of a loaf of bread or smaller. They usualy have a rubber duck in it.

That's a very disturbing thought. Because you know it will happen.

But then again, games developers and Hollywood would get use out of this. A 3D camera recording of a bomb or grenade blowing up, then add it to the game or film in real-time :)

The problem with this is that if the view of the cameras got blocked by anything (very likly IMO) then you would have an imperfect picture.

Well actually the way this works is that the device itself projects the image upwards from the floor/device into a column of essentially steam thus creating the image in midair. so... the only way to block the image is if you wave your hand around between the device and the image. you can walk around it completely without disrupting the image. however gusts of wind can somewhat distort the image, from perhaps a person moving too fast next to it.

and clearly it can only be small scale. i would like to see you build a billboard sized one of this, unfeasible at the very best.
