I dont know about you younger guys, but the first game I played was DOOM. I remember thinking to myself, this was the best game ever made and technology is really coming along, i cant wait until next year to see whats comin out.

My point is that in just a short period of time, like 10 years, gaming has out done itself. Picture the kind of games that will be out in another 10 years. Its almost funny to think that someday you might be playing a game and wont be able to tell the difference between the game or lets say tv or something.

I dont know where im going with this thread, haha, but I just thought that was kinda cool...

your thoughts?

I think to myself 'you cant get any better than this, what else is there they can do?'

Well they constantly get better, and i like being proved wrong. It's a nice thing really :D

not sure where it's heading now but i don't like it.

I know how you feel. You should download the Unreal3 video, because that's the next generation. Coming out in 2006, but the video will make you want to hump your monitor. Just when you thought it couldn't get any better...

I don't think I want 100% photorealistic and 100% lifelike opponents....

HAH! The First game I ever played was Pitfall on the old atari 2600! And GOD how games have changed since then. In all truthfullness, Half Life 2 is the first game in so long I cannot even remember to make me repeatedly STARE at the screen, and think -- they cannot possibly have done this, the technology does not exist yet! I have had my Jaw dropped, and my expectations raised by this game so many times I lost count. It will be a long time (HL3 perhaps) before another game manages to amaze me this much.

Me too. I showed off a screenshot to someone and then said, that's in a game. They just said, "Wow..." No other game really compared graphically. I still don't know why some people think doom 3 had good graphics, it wasn't realistic looking in the least. The heads were pointy, the textures were bland, and the lighting system sucked. I've seen better graphics on older games. HL2 was just jaw-dropping. I highly recommend the unreal3 video to you.

Tell me if i am wrong, but farcry, medal of honor and especially chrome had graphics like that before...

its kinda strange to me, and i dont mind but, arent video games basicly a break from reality? but in truth we are constantly trying to make it more LIKE reality... :)

Not really... we're only trying to make it seem more like it could be reality.

If we were trying to make it more like reality HL2 would feature chapters where you sit around on your sofa watching tv... spend all day at work... get a little gassy from that pizza you just had a while ago...

it's the realism that this will all be remembered by.. the term video game is really just a pre-cursor to virtual-reality or the holodeck..
i'm 31, grew up with Atari 2600, but i wouldn't still be playing games if they hadn't evolved to this point.. more and more adults will be drawn in as the realism impresses the senses..
the FPS is the thing pushing virtual reality, because it's as if you're looking out your own eyes, but because it's so fun, people are pushing it's capabilities beyong anything yet seen..
and some people would rather experience being in a spaceship or even experiencing what it's like to be an eagle, say, then running around shooting people.. but it's the realism that makes all this work..

a lot is going to happen in 10 years!

I agree, I don't want to feel like I'm killing people... and realistic gore is a bit much, don't want to see stuff like in Saving Private Ryan, thanks.

I envision one of these days, there won't be preset animations of models. There will be bones and muscles in the models (figuratively speaking, of course) and the physics. The models will interact with the enviroment by moving their joints different ways to get from one point to another. A thin, strong model will be able to do tight somersaults, and run fast and lightly, whereas a large, bulky model will just be able to move slowly. Wouldn't that just be the shit? I get tingly thinking about it...

especially Chrome

I looked it up and I am wondering why I haven't heard mention of it earlier. With graphics like that it should've gotten more publicity, even though the company is small.
On another note: Woo! Go eastern Europe!

I know exactly how you feel. I think in about 3-5 years games will look perfect maybe even feel perfect.

that would be awesome, although interaction/control of the complex model may be the biggest challenge.. you could have like a tracball that controls balance or something.. pressure sensitive controls are also very important in the future!

Its mind blowing.

Think of something like quake - doom - etc. Now think about how short of time it took to get from there to the kind of games we have now. 20 - 10 - 5 years from now we will get even BETTER with these things. I also think the rate of which games will improve will go up as well.

Maybe but they can't even use realistic grass and land yet...Thats the thing I want most indiviudal blades of grass!

I'm not so sure gaming is going in the right direction. At this rate, PC gaming will be dead in a few years, gaming becomes some mass product like movies (which generally, suck ass) and huge companies like EA take all over the smaller creative studios to make them all pump out sequels every year. Individual companies are struggling, and many very creative developers either died or got taking over.
I wonder how many years developers like Valve, Lionhead and Blizzard will be able to survive.

Gaming is like a tumor, sure it's growing like hell, but is that a good thing? :(

Not all big release movies are grap, and not all small release ones are great (Look how good Lord Of The Rings series was -- those movies did for my view of movies, what half life series has done for my view of games). And not all big release video games are crap (HL2, Far Cry, etc were very good/innovative -- Doom3 was NOT). And consider that you compare video games to movies, and say that games are dying, but look at movies -- no one would argue that they are dying. Gaming will change, but as long as there shall be geeks in the world to play em, there will still be games around to play.

I think I would like the technology to get to that point. But I think I'd rather shoot aliens in photorealism than people. I don't want to desensitize myself that much...

Of course, people of the past dealt with violence daily in REAL LIFE, so we really don't come close to that with video games, no matter how gorey.

I can blow you away in photorealism, but you won't really be dead.

this is my theory... we play games to experience what we can't experience in reality. Once gaming achieves perfect mimicry of reality, like VR, sensory feedback, and all that, we will have no more use for the real world, bc the virtual world will be able to do everything better. When that happens, all innovation will stop, and the human race will stagnate forever, or die of hunger.

The costs of making a game will only increase, the amount of people in the company, the technology, everything becomes more expensive. Developers usually can't afford that, so they step up to a publisher who funds the development. But a publisher only does this if they are guaranteed to make money on it, and usually play save and use a concept that worked. Innovation is being killed.

And movies aren't even that bad, I agree, music on the other hand is the peak of mass produced shit. Sure, there's as much good music as there's bad, but what the mass sees is almost only the bad music. But developers can't afford being in the background, since the costs of making a game are a lot higher, and they won't get any money with an innovative revolutionary concept from the major publishers.

But honestly, look at the biggest publisher, EA, and at the games it brings out, absolute rubbish, and tell me that the future of gaming is bright with those guys? But it will only get bigger, producing the same quality of crap but expanding on the quantity.

I wonder how Steam will affect this, they bypass the publisher, but the developer using it won't have advertising or funding.

Actually I don't really like where the gaming market is going either. I'm all for the next generation of technology, but I'm not sure I'm going to like all of the money exploiting.

There is such a demand for video games, I dont see it dying anytime soon. Hardware comes out almost monthly for computers, I got the top of the line video card a few years ago, and recently bought an ATI 9600 and now even that is out of date.
With the introduction of better A.I. I feel making games may become less of a hassle in that regard. However, making reliastic maps seems very tough. I cant even make one now, so its hard to imgaine someone making ones that encapsulates minor dents or attributes.

Anyways, I enjoyed hearing what you guys think, keep em coming
:)

i dont find games entertaining anomore..
developers will be... and are trying to create the "ULTIMATE" engine.. and concentrating on that instead of gameplay / story and interactivity..(yes.. you read my mind.. DOOM III.. and in some ways, HL2 as well)

not to forget DESIGN.. (thank you metroid echoes)
but that game is on GOD FORBIDDEN GameCube.. OH NOES!

and soon the AWESOME UNREAL III ENGINE will arrive..
and soon.. mario will be able to pick up small rocks and other stuff..

why dont ""THEY"" create the ONE and ONLY .. ULTIMATE GAME ENGINE.. ( For all types of genres ).. and sell it to ALL developers..

and yesterday.. my uncle gave me soba and chili ramen.. oh, and wrong forum.. :|

Hopefully it will be easier for developers to make games as the games becomes more and more complex so will the tools, and what if some smart companies start to develop great tools? What if some group of geeks release a completly free game engine which is completly up to date and everything (kinda lika linux)?

Hopefully all the graphic glory thingy will die when it reaches its peak and innovation is destroyed, I think publishers will then start to focus a bit more on innovation when they relize that the freeware 2d 1993 graphics game is being played more then their 3d top of the line game costing 50 million dollars in just the graphics engine.

We can only hope.

And hopefully, Microsoft's XNA will deliver those handy tools for making games. But even then, game making will only get more expensive.

Yeah, I remember when I first played DOOM, Wolfenstein, and that NASCAR Racing game on my friend's 386 computer when I was about 9 years old, I thought it was the coolest thing ever. Kinda amazing how far games have progressed in just over a decade.

pretty soon we arent going to need a keyboard....

maybe we can get rid of cheats finally...

Never...there will always be people who need cheats...and when all video games are controlled completely through brainwave interpretation, there will be an increased need for them, because let's face it, there are some dumb people out there.

Please don't bash my favourite console. Or any console.

Anyway, I think computer gaming will keep going for quite a while; just as long as there's a new idea, new gameplay tidbit, and I doubt we'll run out any time soon.

i think we'll be just as amazed in 10 years at what we have,

than we are now at the advance that has happened in the last 10.

and it will continue like this for time yet.
