I did the same Abs, had a save of me just having put him into the capsule though so I was able to just reload that and close the hatch. Hey presto.

afaik, you have to play through until the credits finish to get the achievement.

I got the archievement by putting the gnome into the rocket and closing the hatch. Achievement Progress screen didn't show up, but when I was checking my achievements from the menu, I saw I had done The Little Rocket Man too.
So I think just closing the hatch with the gnome inside is enough
