What do you like and dislike about the steam movies. please post your thoughts

The sauce. It was a little too spicy for me. Other than that it was a great meal.

On topic, please.

Personally, the fact that they're the proper-size shows how bad that version of the game looked without AA, and the textures were pretty bland too. But hey, it'll all be different come retail!

I think the Steam movies in general are a fantastic and innovative system, unique to the industry so far - a download client created directly by the manufacturer to obtain movies that aren't blurry, poor quality AVIs but actual, crystal in-game footage. It would be great to see more companies taking up this approach, really lets you have a look at what the game will be like without releasing a full on demo.

Noticing AA is anal retentiveness. IMO the only games that truly benefit from this feature are the older games.

Then I'm anally retentitive. I don't like jagged edges in games, thank you very much.

Tiny Tiny jagged edges.

If your gonna shit your pants because of a few jaggies in your game you have a serious problem... you barely notice them because of whats going on on the screen

I don't really mind a little jaggies. I run most of my games with AA off and rarely notice it.

I think the best thing about these videos is the size and quality, along with the kickass engine.

The only bad thing is they are from an older build.

:borg: Wow, new smilie

*ahem* Yeah, AA is pretty useless in alot of games. I could barely notice the difference in Max Payne and it took away from the performance. Just remember Half Life 2 is being designed to run on low end machines, it won't look so crappy when they release it. Wait a minute... it looks absolutely awesome as is... Bah! Humbug!

I like the fact it keeps me thinking about HL2 coming out and I can sit around and plan the first map I'll be making for the game.

Did I say was "shitting my pants"? No, I was just pointing something minor out. Stop jumping to huge conclusions.

I've got a geforce4 TI4600, and personally I don't give a hoot if there's going to be no FSAA - besides, without it, the performance gain should be enough to up the resolution a notch from what you would have had it on with FSAA, so you get more detail anyway. I used to always use FSAA, but I've found that playing on a higher res with a better framerate can be much more satisfying.

AA really would make the game look a LOT better.

In Console games yes, because they have a resolution of maximum 640x480.
In PC games you can have 1024x768 so it makes the jaggies tiny.

TV screens have a habit of antialiasing the picture on them anyway which is why console games don't tend to look jaggy as much.

The AA won't be a prob if you can up the resolution a notch or 3 and get away with it on a high end card. I do play with AA on on most games though, kind of got used to it.

And those who say jaggies make no diference to a game looks on screen go and play burnout 2 on the ps2 and then go back and play burnout 1. Then come back here and honestly tell me jaggies make no difference.

Well... anyone know what resolution is used for the videos?

Or why not go play Ridge Racer IV? Must be the game that has more jaggies than any other game.
