The greates games...

What are your, perhaps not so greatest games?

I know this has been done before, but there are more people now...

I downloaded Desert Combat for BF1942 the toher day. I have to say it is shocking how good that game is. I would play that any day of the week over most fo the games i have.

I Got the demo for Max Payne 2...Thats amazing and i will soon be buying the full game.

I also got the demo for Halo and i have to say up until a couple of weeks ago when i found out more about the story, i thought Halo was just going to be poor, buts its really fun and has a good story. I want to get the full game now.

Other favourites are Avp2, Medieval Total War, Half-Life, Natural Selection, Sven Co-Op, Homeworld 2, C&C Generals/Zero Hour, and various other Hl mods...

Greatest games ever eh? Deep breath...

Half-Life, Deus Ex, Battlefield 1942, Max Payne, Halo, Jedi Knight I,II and Academy, Call of Duty, Medal of Honour: Allied Assault, Black and White, Mario 64, Goldeneye, Tribes 2, Metriod Fusion, Metroid Prime, Tomb Raider II, Soul Caliber II, Unreal Tournament 2003, Medieval Total War
Quick, we're running out of games!

Oooh I forgot Call Of Duty..Iw ant that as well. Black and White was fun, but i want the second one :(

It depends on what one mean greatest game... Many (99.9%) games have flaws, that make them very excellent games, but not great games. I dont really think I have seen a 'great' game yet. And even if there where one, I probably havent played it.

Example with RPGs:

Take Baldurs Gate. Great? It is awesome!!! But it (and BG2) suffers from something as simple as detachment from the main character (sure, you level up, but where is the soul of your character). This is not a very good flaw in an RPG, is it? Not to mention, it had very static enviroment.

On the other end, Gothic (and II) does everything BG (and II) doesnt do for its character. Perfect then, THE great game? Hardly. Sure, Gothic II (cant speak for I, havent played it) offers a VERY alive world, much better than any RPG I have ever seen, but it isnt a true RPG. Its an RPAG. Meaning, you cant truly roleplay in it (although you can do stuff like sit in chairs, smoke weed (yes, literally ;)) and such).

Now look at Morrowind. It has good character interactiviy (clothes and junk) AND pretty enviroments AND true roleplay! But its an awfull adventure in the end. Actually, you live so much in your character and is given so much freedom the world becomes detached instead. Vvardenfell is a very dull place.

Excellent games, none of them the 'greatest' :)

Planescape Torment was good. So were all the BG and Fallout games. NWN was kinda boring, but the downloadable campaigns make up for that. DX was awesome. HL goes without mention, of course(first modern PC game I played that I actually liked). Frontier and FFE were a couple of the coolest games I've ever played. X was almost as good, and Freelancer was good but too short. Quake II was good for a blast, and Serious Sam was great in a shallow kind of way.

Sam 'n Max Hit the Road rules most of them, though.:E

LOL

To my mind I guess you should have instead 'gamings greatest moments', after all it's the incidents that make games memorable.

One of the greatest moments in a game for me was in MoH:AA. After the Normandy invasion you have orders to meet some dudes at a farm house, but when you get there suddenly your contact get's sniped in the head and you and your squadmates come under assault from a platoon of german stormtroopers.

At the time as I watched in dismay as the germans emerged from orchard behind the farmhouse I distinctly remember thinking 'Jesus ****ing Christ....the AI is actually attacking!! WTF!!!' as the adrenalin kicked in. Now we take this stuff for granted, but at the time it was quite revolutionary.

Personally I thought the Halo demo was particularly unimpressive. Meh...

Anyhoo <Deep breath also> : Half Life (inc. Op4), Deus Ex, Grim Fandango, Sam & Max, Monkey Island games, Day of the Tentacle, Tekken Tag Tournament, The GTA series (especially Vice City, natch), Theme Hospital, Max Payne (hnnngh, sorta), No One Lives Forever (the original), Giants (EVERYONE should have this game), Tomb Raider II (at the time), Splinter Cell (sorta), The Thing (but mainly because I was pleasantly surprised at how far it exceeded my expectations), Midtown Madness (the game that, along with Bullit, made me desperately crave an old Mustang)

With that in mind, I can definetly say Gothic II!

Your enemy (unknown) has just wrecked a vital artifact, defiled it. You take your priest of the three major gods to repair it, in ceremony of fireworks and praying, all within a deep forrest and a stonehenge style rock formation.
But you cant do it of course. You walk around in full metal plate armor and a badass axe on your back and pick flowers. Nothing more... You just walk around... And pick flowers in the forrest... :E

Well, that's all I can remember right now.

Many have been too recent for me to tell yet.

(edit: Honorable mention for Neverwinter Nights's editor)

I like to keep my "greatest games" list to games that I think are great, not every game I've played, like some others have done...

Doom
Myst
Half-Life
Morrowind
Starcraft
Alpha Centauri

Total Annihilation - 7-8 nearly simultaneuos nuclear strikes on the enemy base. Several missiles are intercepted by the anti missile system detonating midway through the map and destroying an outpost and an aircraft on patrol in the area. The map shakes as the other missiles reach their target. But there is no victory screen. The commander has escaped again and the base is already being rebuilt. I love this game :cheese:

Battlezone - the enemy attack has failed, only one tank is left and it is retreating. It must be the commander. You give chase, but your bomber is no match for his faster scout. Your last hope is to fire off the two missiles, which speed toward his vehicle. The guy ejects, and now the hunt begins ...

Red Alert - build 50 nuclear trucks and park them side by side for one hell of a chain reaction.

GTA: Vice City - 4 Mexicans on dirk bikes are sent to kill you. You get out of the car, take out your minigun and let the fun begin.

ufo: Enemy unknown
- the no.1 strategy-game. Oh, if someone would remake this true classic(ufo:a-m sucked imo)
quake2
- It was a blast. Loved the music.
Terranova
- many of you might have missed this game. One of the first(?) Squad based fps-game set in future. Still one of the best games i know. Oh damn.. should i install it again...
half-life
- Well, yup
mechwarrior2
- Critical hit. The first game i bought. Marauder \o/ (too bad they stopped making BT:3025 :/)

All Ultima games
Daggerfall
Wolfenstein
Civilization II
Alpha Centuari
Quake
Mule
Halflife
Thief
BurgerTime
Qbert
DukeNukem
Unreal
Red Neck Rampage

I forgot to mention Virus. Never could hit anything for shit, but it was one of the best games I've ever played. I can still remember the noises the different alien ships made.

*NnrrrrrrrrrRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrRRRRRRRRR*
*Weebleweebleweebleweebleweebleweeble*
*Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhpishtpishtpisht*

:E

No lunar love on here(didnt see anyone mention it if you did nvm)?? Eh thats my fav game..theres others but im too lazy to type them up lol.

I've played hundreds more games than the ones I listed, but honestly, those are the greatest games I've ever played.. they'll always be my favorite games and in my book.. the best ones :)

shuzer, did you ever play landstalker for the genesis? that game was awesome (along with ps, probably the only good rpg on genesis).

Can't say that I did.. I rented ALOT more SNES games than Genesis games.. but, still, rented alot on both systems

you should rom it if you can find it. afaik, sega has no beef with genesis roms, which is cool. i wonder if nintendo is still tight about that..

Considering Nintendo is recycling all of their old games and not really turning out alot of new classics for GBA, they probably do =(

FF7
FF3 - Or FF6..I always forget which is the US version...
FFX (Completely kicked that game's ass. Everyone went around the whole sphere grid. Killed the 10million life guy)
GTA Series
Halo (Both Versions) - Not used to PC controls quite yet because I've been playing it for a few years on Xbox
MGS1
MGS2 - Can't wait for Snake Eater
Devil May Cry 1 - (DMC 2 sucked hardcore)
Conker's Bad Fur Day
Smash Bros.
Smash Bros. Melee
Worms series
Chrono Trigger
Battletoads vs Double Dragon
KIRBY'S ADVENTURE (BEST NINTENDO GAME EVER!!)
Kirby's Dream Course
BF1942 & DC
HL1 & CS
Warcraft 3
Starcraft
Carmageddon 1 & 2
Cannon Fodder 1 & 2
Soul Calibur 1 (haven't played 2 yet)
NHL 93 (Played so many seasons on that game)
Mario Bros. Series (Especially Mario 64)
Contra
Sonic games
X-Wing and other Star Wars flight games
Tribes 2
Zelda: Link to the Past and Link's Awakening
Guardian Heroes (Sega Saturn) - Not many have played this one I bet. I had a blast with it though.
That's all I can think of right now. I know there's a ton I'm forgetting.

EDIT: I didn't like Zelda 64 or its sequel Majora's mask. Didn't like Morrowind - Too much freedom and no story for me. Call of Duty was awesome to begin with. Russian campaign wasn't fun for me. Splinter Cell was ok. I got annoyed when someone would see me in the dark when I wasn't moving.. then I'd shoot them before they made any noise and somehow the entire floor knew exactly where I was. Perfect Dark was just overrated in my mind.
