Wow. I don't know why I never heard about this during the time it happened... but it would have been great if I had during those sad times.

Anyways... a news story from a while ago. I thought it was pretty remarkable.

Be sure to check out the pdf too that I have linked. You don't have to read the text, but you should look at all the pictures in it(quite alot). VERY cute. I can't help but smile when I see things like this. :)

By the way, if this has been posted before(which I doubt), direct me to that thread please.

They're so cute! It kinda sucks that they'll be relocating the hippo to live with other hippos though :(.

That hampster is pretty damn adorable too. And snakes are the shit. All slithery, and scaly, and slick... I love 'em. I had two when I was younger :D

My guess is the snake likes the warmth from the hamster (they enjoy basking on dark rocks in the sun etc)
And the hamster likes the snake for the same reason the runt of a class "likes" the bully.........it dosn't wanna piss it off, otherwise "chomp"

As for the hippo, well thats gonna be a more complex relationship that mammals can develop....the tortise prob dosn't give 2 ****s.

NO THAT'S NOT TRUE. THE TORTOISE LOVES THE HIPPO! THEY'RE BEST FRIENDS n_n

thats pretty cute! we should get our own tortoise...the HL2 TORTIOSE!

I hope the hippo gets big and steps on the tortoise.

>: (

Yeah. I love it when I read things about predator and prey going against their natural instincts to tear the crap out of each other.

Things like cats and dogs... or cat and mice... cat and bird friendships. Just so damn cute :)

The other awesome thing about this hippo story, which noone commented about. Is how it survived the tsunami after it got drug out into the ocean. Pretty amazing, huh?

You unappreciative bastard!

It's be more amazing if it weren't for the fact that HIPPOS CAN SWIM!

Adult hippos are not bouyant. They cannot swim effectively. Its the young hippos that can.

From wikipedia:

Adult hippos are not generally buoyant. When in deep water, they usually propel themselves by leaps, pushing off from the bottom. They have been observed to move at 8km/h in water. Young hippos are buoyant and more often move by swimming, propelling themselves with kicks of their back legs. One hippo calf survived after being pushed out to sea during the tsunami generated by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and was rescued on a nearby island. [3]

Baby hippos are born underwater at a weight between 60 to 110 pounds and must swim to the surface in order to take their first breath. The young often rest on their mothers' backs when in water that is too deep for them, and swim underwater in order to suckle.

Adult hippos typically resurface to breathe every 3-5 minutes. The young have to breathe every 2-3 minutes. The process of surfacing and breathing is automatic, and even a hippo sleeping underwater will rise and breathe without waking. Hippos have been documented staying submerged for up to 30 minutes [4]. A hippo closes its nostrils when it submerges.

And the hippo in question was a young hippo, no?

Yes but it was a freaking tsunami man. People who got dragged out to sea like that didn't survive, and they can swim.

It was still an amazing thing that happened, that the baby hippo managed to survive.

Well hippos can hold their breathe for longer than us. And seeing as the younger ones are bouyant then it probably had a good chance of surviving.

Poor thing, lost all its family. =[
