Something was said in another thread about how physical objects could trigger actions in other physical objects and that got me thinking...It would be very cool to see this (http://194.29.64.17/thecog/movie.html) Honda Accord ad simulated in Source...obviously, there are some parts that would have to be scripted, but I think that a lot of it could just be physically simulated and it would be an awesome way to show off the engine...just a cool idea...Does anyone else have any thoughts about this? Do you think it's possible?

PS - For those of you who haven't seen this, it was created by Honda UK and is 100% real, no camera tricks, CGI, or anything. It took 600+ takes to get it to work right. A lot of people claim it's fake because the tires roll up hill, but they were actually weighted so that they can go up the ramp a little (if you look closely, you'll see them slow down a bit). If you search for "Honda Accord cog", you can probably find some articles about it. Try this site (http://www.muppetclan.com/honda.html)

Well common, if bits are gonna be scripted then you could do it in hl1 engine if you like. I beleive a question like this was mentioned to gabe in a question about the physics engine, cant remember what he said.

I wanna see it done with 0 scripting:)

I'm thinking it's bullshit, but I dont know. I wasnt there when it was made and I'm no physics major.

Well, the only stuff I'm thinking would need to be scripted are the things with liquid (the oil can spilling and the spray on the windshields which activates the wipers) and sound (the speakers making the windshield vibrate). Other than that, I'm pretty sure that everything could be physically simulated...

EDIT: hey nsxownzme, read this article , it describes the whole process they went through to make it.

yeah, thsoe bits would need to be. Maybe not the sound, never know what source is capable of:p Maybe just a slightly edited version of it which is a bit different could be done. Would be mad to see.:)

Yeah, I'm thinking it might be something I'll take on myself...I haven't done a ton of modding though, so it could be pretty tricky...

But for now, it's off to bed for me, so maybe I'll ponder it tomorrow!

yeah the honda can be done in theory without too much difficulty. As for the tires, there is a heavy weight inside them, just at the top of the tyre, so it only takes a small tap to get them rolling with a fair bit of force. The muffler looks crazy, but its almost round, you can see that sort of behaviour from plenty of objects shaped like that. If you wanted to show of sources physics, there would be much cooler demos you could come up with than that.

Yeah iton the "only valve info" thread but I dont feel like reading through it again just to find the email for u I dont think it was Gabe though ...

They said this could be done be disabling the one random number generator at the begining, so you can always get the same result.

I think the reference in the 'valve info' thread was something along the lines of dropping a weight onto the end of a see-saw and would it react the same way due to physics. The answer was something around what Fuzzy said.

Most likely the situation would also apply to multiple elements and not just one thing.

We've been over this, Someone from Valve said, that essentially, it wouldnt work. Something about a random function in the physics engine would cause things to carry out diferntly almost every time. It was in the Valve info thread back before the server change, dunno if its still there.

There is in fact some CGI in the commercial when that pipe rolls across the floor. The studio was not big enough, so they had to shoot two scenes and then merge them together with the aid of CGI.

But anyhow, there are a few things in there which I seriously doubt Source could model, like wind and turbulence for example (the part with the windshield IIRC).

I think there is wind, at the end of the baricade demo the flying thing moves the powerlines with its big fan.

Yeah, and there was mention of a simulated tornado using the source engine. It would actually move objects and the player around.

Yeah but that's most likely scripted. Calculating the turbulence created by some flat object moving through the air is too complicated in comparison to the visual results to be justified. If you do things like that with any accuracy in real time you would need super computers. :p

Hey, my high school physics teacher showed us the film two times during class and she was like, see how much awesome stuff you can do with physics? Then she picked up a laser pointer and was shining it on stuff and she patted the erasers on the chalkboard and had the laser go through the chalk and said, whoa im a navy SEAL.
Finally she pointed the laser pointer at a pane of glass and literally said, "Do lasers go through glass?" Remember this is a physics teacher, obviously a graduate of DeVry.

gabe said that all of it could be done...but not directly...i needed a little bit of coding i think
