Here's what we know so far.

  1. Valve are still 'finalising' prices. Doesn't mean it won't be free.
  2. CS2 is not CS:S.
  3. CS:S will be 'free' with a Steam subscription.

And here are the possibilities.

  1. CS:S and other Source ports will be free to owners of HL platinum and HL2.
  2. CS:S will only be avaliable through Steam.
  3. CS:S will come in the HL2 collector's editon (HL2CE).
  4. CS:S will be released at budget price.

There you have it. Discuss/criticize away.

I thought they just weren't calling CS:S CS:2. Dunno. I should watch that vid again.

I thought CS source would be like $20, but im extremely happy to hear that it will be free.

and it will be called CS:Source not CS2

This is what my friends and I have gathered:

CS: Source will be CS running on the Source engine. It will have same gameplay and controls, just better graphics and animations. It's like one of those custom graphics packs you can get (ie GamesFusion) but 100x better - every texture, model, etc is better. CS:S will probably be backwards compatible with the original CS; you can play against people using the old CS when you have CS:S, and the only difference between you is what you see. It's the same principle as when you play CS against people with CS custom packs... get what I'm saying?

Counter-Strike 2 will be a completely new game, NOT compatible with CS. It will feature new levels with greater strategy, more realism, new guns, etc. It will completely change the way CS is played.

Personally, I would really love to play CS2 at the very beginning, when no one knows how to do everything and there's no 1337 h4x0rz.

Have to disagree about CS:Source and CS being compatitable. The physics(barrels hitting people) and the difference in environment(its a bit different, the maps wont line up) wont allow that. Also, I dont think valve would make you buy each CS/DoD:Source title seperately, I would imagine all these games would come in one box. The source updated games that is. Like the HL Platinum Pack, cept different stuff this time around. So...

(1) Source Platinum Box = HL1:Source, CS:Source, DoD:Source, OpForce:Source, TFC:Source...

See what I mean? This is just what I think though. I refuse to buy each one of those seperately. :)

I don't think it will be backwards compatible because in the demo you see barrels explode and stuff like that, you cant really do that if it will be backwards compatible...

HL1 and HL2 netcodes are completely different. They could feasibly be compatible, but I would be very suprised if they were. E-mail Gabe about it. :)

You just said that gameplay would be exactly the same. :p

So... has it been officially announced that CS:2 is going to be released after CS:S? If so, does anyone have any idea when it will be released?

but people say CSS is the mp part of HL² , if this is true and buy HL² bu t if we need to buy the mp seppertly ... , this isn't good , then you will spent 70 $ on 1 game if you put it this way ...

Uh, surely CS: Source is a MOD not a game in it's own right, just like original CS, so you could buy it on it's own, but I'm sure they won't charge to dl it (or at least not very much at all)

Aah! As has already been stated in this thread, they're just not calling CS:Source CS2! Oh and it'll be out around the same time as HL2 ...

Multiplayer is still shrouded in secrecy...There have been rumours that CS:Source is the Hl2 multiplayer, but its all speculation.

However, you will not need to buy multiplayer seperately. It just wouldn't make sense for Valve to do that...I tihnk they have also said they wouldn't do that.

I also remember something about there not being a CS2...But i can't remember if i saw that in an email or just some post.

if there isn't going to be an officially released CS2,then you know the community will release "Anti-Terrorist 2" featuring all the weapons and characters from CS, only better!

Um, so what's CS: Source then? A piece of cheese?

I was anwering this I also remember something about there not being a CS2, even if CS2 is not released officially, we will get a few clone mods, and CS:Source is not a sequel, it is a port with updated graphics, and of course, Source physics

Oh, and of course a mod like "Anti-Terrorist 2" will feature the CS characters and weapons, but with new models, and of course all new maps incorporating phsysics into them.

it should be free if you own HL2, and Hl1 and the mod already... otherwise theres nothing stopping me from porting it my damn self.

Apart from the lack of code, need of conversion tools, exported .map files...

CS: Source and CS2 are different products.

Well done ... however, who says that CS2 exists? It has been discussed so many times, it just gets boring ....

What stopped the people with the illegal leak to port both CS and HL1 to the HL2 engine? nothing, because it was done, and it was fairly simple (don't want to get into the specifics, I didn't do it myself, as I never d/l the leak, but it just involved moving files). However, it was just a "barebones" port, with the HL2 water, shadows, and the models, where they could be applied.

If you can do it yourself when HL2 comes out, it will just be "barebones" and not as nice looking as CS:Source, or possibly HL:Source

Gooseman has made posts about it in the various forums. In one of the many E32k4 shakey recording, someone asks if they are being shown CS2 and the answer is no.

someone asks if they are being shown CS2 and the answer is no.

How does that prove it exists? I may be starting to believe that it may exist, but someone saying 'no' means nothing! As someone else said earlier, say CS2=Cat, CS:Source=Dog. You are watching Dog...
"Is this cat?"
"No"
How does that prove Cat exists?? :rolling:

Actually it was more along the lines of "Is this Cat?" "We're not calling it Cat." Daft either way... but the Gamereactor interview implies that CS2 does exist and is in the works.

I'm sure they did it deliberately to cause mass speculation and chaos: YOU'RE PLAYING RIGHT INTO THEIR HANDS!! We'll all be dead by Tuesday.

One thing for sure.

If CS:S is not free i wont be playing it.

simple as that, IMO if you are stupid enough to buy a redone game with better graphics and absolutely nill change to gameplay then you need to be shot.

Man, makes me wonder why so many people bought Quake 3 or UT2003 without getting executed.

Actually, I remember Goose himself saying that he is working on CS2 "full-steam ahead". And that was a couple of years ago. If the VALVE team alone is simply porting it to the new Source engine, then what has Gooseman been working on all of this time? A very fancy cake with elaborate decorations? I am willing to bet $300 (no joke, if anyone wants to make this with me I am absolutely serious.) that CS:Source is entirely different from CS2, and that CS2 will come out probably later, but definately come out of Valve and worked on by Gooseman himself.

Just to try to clear a few things up.

Gabe and Doug lombardi did an interview that was posted today on the forums that said cs2 will be made but they have yet to start dev on it and would have a holiday first. What part Gooseman will play in it has not been stated that i know of.

CS:source will not be compatible with cs. It's not a possibility with the physics, netcode, weapon calculations etc. Also ook at the unfairness issues over different sized crosshairsin cs, can you imagine the arguments about entireley different games.

CS:Source probably will cost money and I'm happy to pay it. I paid £10 for half-life 2 or 3 years ago. In that time I played hl through 3 times and played cs a minimum of 30 hours a week for 2 years.

I havn't seen anything anywhere say that cs:source will be free and if you are expecting that then you are probably going to be dissapointed. CS is one of the most popular games ever and because of it's mod routes valve made very little from it compared to a full game. Charging for cs:source will be a way for them to get the money from the franchise that they bought.

CS:S = CS1.6 with better gfx, physics, ragdoll etc.
CS2 = a new CS!!! not another map, weapon, bots (CZ..lol), update.. - A NEW CS!!!

OT: I think CS:S gonna be free only for HL2 users, as for CS2, u'll have 2 pay :\

I get the feeling you played neither game. :p

Nope, you must just disagree with me on my deeply held belief that all deathmatch games may as well be identical :p

Like an idiot I purchased both, without making the connection; but hell, I don't like CS much and I still play the damn thing. I AM A CONSUMER WHORE!

Every Quake, even the latest one to some extent, likes brown, a lot; I actually prefer Q2 over 3, but then again I'm wierd. UT2003 really didn't differ all that much for me from the original UT; although I'll admit that 2004 was slightly more impressive; as some people argued it was what 2003 should've been.

Anyway. I wouldn't play CS:S simply because I lack the connection capable of running that kind of game... besides, I'd probably be absorbed in what (we all hope to god) will be alternate MP modes for HL2/Source.

I'm a big cs fan but I'm not gonna pay for cs:s if I can buy cs2 on the same day.

para, cs:source iss hipping the same day as hl2. CS2 won't start being deveolped or even planned till after hl2 ships. They are not going to ship on the same day.

Makes sense, that way I'll have to buy both :(

Yeah and I think the guys at Valve might like to enjoy a vacation after a few years of developing the game..

Aye, and I'll be buying both of 'em. CS:S will be lke mana from heaven as the game has cried out for a new engine for YEARS.

-I think- there will be like a single player only pack where you only get HL2 . Then also the collectors pack or whatever which also includes CS:S . And then CS2 is a separate game.

If CS:S is not free , ill not buy it , i prefer to play other mods and wait for CS2.

If CS2 comes before TF2, I outright refuse to purchase another Valve product again.
