Aloha,
I'm thinking of doing a map for Left 4 Dead. And because im gonna make it for you guys, i thought it would be cool to let you say what you would like to play.

Here's the plan, you post the following;

-The specific locations where you want the level to take place, eg. a town, then a research facility, ending in a deserted laboratory.

-A very short reason why for instance the 4 survivors would need to go to the zombie infested research facility in the first place, eg. because the apc is parked behind it the deserted laboratory.

-The overall theme and atmosphere of the map, think of the time of day, the wearther (raining, snowing, sunny) etc.

-And some examples of cool gameplay you would want in the map.

It doesnt have to be a long story or so, any suggestions are welcome !

I like the idea of the research facility set in someplace snowy like the Arctic.

Where?
A tore-down shopping mall. Everything is broken except for the sound system, forever doomed to play Muzak.

Why?
A car crash.

Theme?
Extremely dark and dusty. The overall feeling should be "Hell, is someone watching me from up there?"

Gameplay?
Getting trapped in the bar, having to block the entrance with physics props and escaping through the back door.
Kicking down store shelves to crush zombies.

Good thread.
Where?
A farm with the survivors as a family.

Why?
Because these farmers have no civilization around them, they were relatively safe from the outbreak.

Theme?
At night time with a full moon, slightly foggy. Environments should be a corn field, barn, horse silo, and a grain silo.

Gameplay?
The zombies should first attack the house. Then the family moves out of the house into the horse barn where there are a few human zombies and zombie horses. Then the family moves into the cornfield. A secret area in the cornfield could be a crop circle. A few scarecrows in the cornfield. Stalks of corn shake when zombies move through them. Then finally there should be the grain silo where a helicopter rescues them at the top.

*Oh yeah the mall idea should include an underground parking lot lol.

I was thinking of a deserted dusty village like in the trailer of Biohazard (Resident Evil 5). The environment shown in the trailer looked visually very interesting and detailed. Also the trailer was set in a daytime instead of nighttime which most zombie infested levels are made in.

I like the idea of blocking entrances with props etc. First time I saw it in the Hl2 trailer when he blocked the stair case with stuff I really hoped HL2 would have more of that, which it didn't.

Keep the ideas coming. There very helpful.

For a where...

- A Hospital
- Inside a Boat
- A residential neighborhood
- High Floors of a skyscraper and you can look out windows and see far distance
- A mine or tunnels underground
- A Combine vs. Rebel Omaha Beach

IDK, just thoughts...

- High Floors of a skyscraper and you can look out windows and see far distance

It would be a bitch to make, but rifle-butting zombies out of the 56th floor would be very cool !!

I've always wanted a classic american style suburbia map, dunno how well it'd work though.

Have you played the WTC map for HL2DM? All it has is like a sattelite pic for the ground and some 3d rectangles for buildings, and it accualy looks pretty good. If you just add some better looking distant buildings it would look pretty good.

The "sattelite pic" is the City 17 texture from HL2. :naughty:

Mix all of the ideas above together and we'll get a great map.

That's another good one dodo. I Really like the sky scraper idea, I'm new to mapping but I think i'm going to give it a go in my new map. A school would be cool. (just don't get cought by the police, remember that kid that got expelled and arrested for mapping his school in hammer)

I'll map whatever i want :). But yeah, go for it ! Just keep in mind a school would be small for a L4D map.
You'd need to maybe stick an extra environment nexto the school so the player doesnt run through the map/school in 5 minutes.
