I've been thinking how games have started to be less fun lately in general and I've found one of the reasons why.
Games that have been released lately don't have co-op. Games back in the day for SNES, Genesis and whatnot pretty much all had co-op. Playing side-by-side with your friends is something that games have really lacked lately.
I miss going through Rock n Roll Racing with friends where we each buy our upgrades and get new vehicles ourselves, racing along-side each other but still rivals.
I miss playing cooperative beat 'em ups always striving to get to that next level.
I miss playing Secret of Mana with friends (coolest co-op rpg ever) going through the story, fighting over who gets to be who
I miss playing all these classic games because there were so many great memories tied to them from playing with friends.
Now games seem to always have team-based combat or squad-based teamplay multiplayer etc. But they're not the same. I don't play much of these games because I don't know who I'm playing with. It just feels like I'm running through the battlefield alone playing against a bunch of smart bots. Everybody knows playing these games with a friend is 10x better because joining forces with people you know is MUCH better than playing along side randoms.
I just think more games need co-op. Take Halo 1 & 2 for example (not a popular one on these forums obviously but still), they have co-op. They're alright games when you play by yourself, but I'll be damned if I haven't had a blast playing through with a friend over and over again. I can't even remember how many times I've played Halo 1's campaign with a friend.
Bottom line: Co-op elevates any game's fun factor by like 10x and damnit I want more of it on consoles and PC.
