I've been thinking how games have started to be less fun lately in general and I've found one of the reasons why.

Games that have been released lately don't have co-op. Games back in the day for SNES, Genesis and whatnot pretty much all had co-op. Playing side-by-side with your friends is something that games have really lacked lately.

I miss going through Rock n Roll Racing with friends where we each buy our upgrades and get new vehicles ourselves, racing along-side each other but still rivals.

I miss playing cooperative beat 'em ups always striving to get to that next level.

I miss playing Secret of Mana with friends (coolest co-op rpg ever) going through the story, fighting over who gets to be who :P

I miss playing all these classic games because there were so many great memories tied to them from playing with friends.

Now games seem to always have team-based combat or squad-based teamplay multiplayer etc. But they're not the same. I don't play much of these games because I don't know who I'm playing with. It just feels like I'm running through the battlefield alone playing against a bunch of smart bots. Everybody knows playing these games with a friend is 10x better because joining forces with people you know is MUCH better than playing along side randoms.

I just think more games need co-op. Take Halo 1 & 2 for example (not a popular one on these forums obviously but still), they have co-op. They're alright games when you play by yourself, but I'll be damned if I haven't had a blast playing through with a friend over and over again. I can't even remember how many times I've played Halo 1's campaign with a friend.

Bottom line: Co-op elevates any game's fun factor by like 10x and damnit I want more of it on consoles and PC.

yeah, sure is. but i have no friends to play with so ima stick with my CS:S :afro:

I'm a single player gamer. More people just make the experience less enjoyable.

Agreed. I remember playing many lame games because it had co op and it was more fun joking around with them and doing dumb stuff/owning them. Multiplayer is cool an all, but it's still not as fun as coop. Granted you need to have friends for coop to work and it helps to have funny friends so it wont be boring.

I remember the many times we would do an FFA in golden eye and then me and another good player would gang up on 1 person so they get wtfpwned. Or in donkey kong one person would crash into the 3rd player that was catching up. Ahh good times. Even when your not facing someone and teaming up it is still awsome. I agree that coop makes games fun by 10x.

All games should ship with coop.

It pisses me off that there are all these great games that would be made greater if played coop. It also pisses me off that I have no modding ability.

The last game I played with Co-op was Mario KArt Double Dash, and that was pretty cool. Made the game hundreds of times easier (as if it wasn't already).

I remember playing the fun but severely broken Far Cry coop.

He told me to wait for him, so I wait, then he runs all the way across the island and snipes me.

Yes! More co-op.

Secret of Mana played alone is merely a very good game. Played with 2 friends it's as good as gaming gets.

yes there's not enough co-op. Splinter cell chaos theory had the most enjoyable co op I've played in awhile

I dont understand why developers dont add co-op for there games. Like Doom 3 co-op would be insane! FarCry anyone?

Mmmmmm Co-op. The most fun game mode ever. There is always a bigger need for it.

Yeah except it was so buggy I could never even connect to a server, and if I was lucky enough to even do that I'd get disconnected...what a bunch of bull

I'm talking offline co-op on xbox

The developers probally figure people want more of a challenge instead of beating on the same friends so they add online capability and figure that will cover the coop. Truth is it doesn't have the same feel when you play with someone you don't even know. You can't even punch him in the face for TKing.

yea, BF2 squads are nice, but still people will punish me if i kill them accidently...what kinda team is that?

Sigh...

Co-Op is the single best experience for gaming.

Which is why Doom Co-Op is the best thing ever. Because it is. And I'm making a mod similar in concept. WTB C++ knowledge pst

1k gold and sexor in WOW and im your man pesh!

Good point, when I unload a doa-12 clip into someones face and they punish me it is rude. Also when I blow up a friendly blackhawk with 1 AT missle when its fully loaded is just funny and they should laugh with me.

COOP is definately need in more games, I still remember playing halo with my one friend. two greatest memories were mostly of the most dumb things but thats funny becuase the guy is right beside you.

like just as he's about the jump into the pelican and casually saying "hey man look to your right" which I then proceed to fire a rocket at him midjump, we couldn't stop laughing for 5 minutes.

or when you have to swipe a phantom and fly up to that one entrance thats really really high up in the snowy area. he had gotten his blown up somehow and he had to wait at the bottom while I flew up their and then carefully pushed it off the ledge, it took 30 seconds to hit the ground (15 of those seconds it was out of sight on both screens).

good memories...

Co-op is the reason why WoW is so damn good.

no, i mean like i'll be unloading on some enemy and my teammate will run in front of me, or i'll throw a grenade and they will chase after it like i dropped it or something...

war is hell...

I got back into Heretic and Hexen a while ago when I got like Jdoom or something to play them coop. OMGWTF Fun.

OMG JDOOM COOP IS THE BEST.

Doom 3 Co-oP is the WIN.

Halo Co-op was good.

Tenchu Co-op was bettah. (Not really, but i like ninja games).

Perfect Dark Zero has co-op! w00t Its going to be fun as shit fighting together against the bad guys

I've been looking for some more co-op games recently. Everybody should start listing some good co-op games new or old for PC or console.

I'll get the ball rolling with some obvious ones -

Splinter Cell:Chaos Theory had some fun co-op for Xbox - didn't play it for PC
Only 4 levels but they were decently long and took some good teamwork.

Halo 1 & 2 both have co-op for the main campaign

Keep the ball rolling :)

It's too bad the stupid devs of S.T.A.L.K.E.R decided to remove the co-op, imo with the extra dev time they have now they should use it to add co-op again..
Co-op in such an open-ended RPG AND FPS environment would be great.:)

Yah I wish Halo PC had co-op.. Anyone knows if Halo 2 PC will have co-op?

Man, i doubt if that will even come out.

*doesn't keep up with the news*

nothing beats a pro evo soccer tournament with mates via multitap

so much fun....

I've not had much experience with co-operative games myself - Quake, Serious Sam and the obvious side-scrollers like Streets Of Rage were all good. Also Sonic 2 and 3, although no-one wanted to go Tails as he could hardly do anything!

But I think even multiplayer, on the same system, has died out a bit too. Fuzion Frenzy on Xbox is absolutely brilliant fun in 4 player, as is Worms 3D (and the 2D series of Worms too!). Also Micro Machines, Bomberman etc were fantastic 4 player games back in the day :dozey:

It's so stupid. Co-op is so brilliant and so rare that nowadays it's a big plus point for any game coming out - "ooh, I wouldn't mind buying that, it's got co-op." Are publishers and developers too lazy to code it? Do they not recognise the divinity of co-operative play? Or have the men in suits somehow come to the conclusion that co-op doesn't sell and that we don't want it?
