The low poly gun project-WIP

i know that guns arent exactly the subject of a large scale project but im trying to do something new by experimenting with low detailed models and highly detailed textures.

the model is a concept gun that i drew up while i was bored. i first sketched out the gun on graph paper and then edited and redrew it in photoshop.

ive attached the sketch , painted sketch and flat shades of the gun.
the gun currently weighs in at 1003 polys which i think is alright.

tell me what u think so far.

nice design but i think the model lets it down, i know you said you wanted a low poly/detail but if you were to add form smoothing groups and chamer some of those edges it will go along way :) looking cool so far tho :cheers:
 
well thats the point really, initialy i thought of chamfering some edges and making it look smooth but still maintain a decent poly count but then i thot to myself i should practise what i preach and use hl2's new source engine to its extreme so im going to be playing with difuse , specular , reflective and bump mapping to fake the geometry. its jsut an exercise to see how good i cna get this model to look. i had to delete quite a bit of details but its all good.

im currently sknning the silencer i want this gun too look really dirty.
will post updates soon.. until then if theres something that needs criting pls go right ahead :D
 
There are a lot of polies going into the handle, and i think they'd be better off being used on areas of the gun that you'll see more of in game. Otherwise nice work.

I like your painted sketch btw :D
 
the back of the handle looks really weird... i dont know if it is on purpose but it like folds inward...

Wow, I really like the design, the painted sketch one... not in a realistic way but it just looks right! :) nice job on the model too
 
Why is it that almost every mod page I got to only seems to have gun screens?

yes i did post the initial concept a long time ago but the 3d was done recently .
about the fold on the handle i noticed it and thot it sorta looked cool so i left it alone.

my dsl got cut recently which is why i havent updated this but ive been working on it.
ive started texturing the barrel.

its still very much wip but i think that its coming along nicely.

btw: THIS IS NOT for a mod but will be tested in an engine ...ur coment was totaly invalid because this is just a test to see how detailed a low poly object could be made through mapping.

ps: thank u for all the replies i really thot that this wud be ignored.

this isnt really a small project and i will be posting all the updates in this thread so pls continue to reply i really think the barrel is missing something.
 
erm

looking good so far... the only thing i'd say is that maybe the silencer is a tad to large? and have u uvw'd the silencer on its own..?
 
well yes i have unwraped the silencer on its own because it wil be a diff part .

the big silencer is part of the design....it just looks exagerated from that angle.
any cc on the texture?
 
The texture is great, but if I had to criticise it, I'd say the shading on it looks a tiny bit too much like if it was plastic. Maybe harsher light on the highlights?

do you mind if i model it, then yo ucould skin it im going to stick to about 1000 polies.
 
i wudnt mind skinning it but whats wrong with my model that makes u want to model ur own :S ?
 
there could be alot more detail on it from your picture, ummm the handle looks to be high poly and teh flash light only needs to have like 8 sides if that
 
hmm well its my project so id rather do everything..
this is the first texture that ive made without using any photo references or overlays .
quite and acoplishment for me atleast.
 
alright sounds good dont mind if i model it and try to skin one myself :p could be my own project too, i need to learn how to skin and uvw map anyways

It should make you happy that someone else wants to model your concept. Also, your model looks like it's a lot less than 1000 polies.
 
well i just wanted to model it cause it looked cool but since you dont want me to i wont
 
lol its kinda steeling someones idea, but at the same time a complement catch22,

anyway i rly liked the concept sketch and model, cant wait to see it textured, well done on keeping to what u set out to achieve

Looking good so far, but just one thing.

If you truly want to, "use hl2's new source engine to its extreme" would it not be best to create a high poly version and use a normal map? You'd achieve way more detail that way with a low poly gun.
 
that really dosent look like 1000 polies, u can make that for around 600
what size is the silenecer texture? if its above 256 u really need to learn how to optimize, both your model and skin.
