Does anyone know if we'll be able to use the manipulator on other players in Multiplayer?
 
I doubt it. Force grip was quite annoying in JK2, and this would practically be the same thing.
 
maybe.....cause it is a players weapon...if the Manipulator is fully upgraded, or errrm somethin maybe you can get it out thier HANDS and it goes to the floor, but u have to be v close maybe.
 
i'd like it... imagine... there is a cliff.... 1 on 1 deathmatch.... fight to the death.... he whips out a sub-machine gun.... u pull out ur manipulator. he'll type, "dude, do u wanna kill me or throw the pebble over there at me?" u walk up to him and turn the dirty bastard on. u throw him over the cliff... then he respawns and blasts u to high hell... he he he, that kick ass
 
it wont be in multiplayer and if it is then most servers will have it turned off or something
 
the gravitygun or manipulator has a weight limit and since everything in the source engine will have a weight to them means people will weigh something and i dont think its capable lifting very heavy things like people and monsters,only tables,ovens,boxes and other "lighter" objects

Unless you make a mod though,then you can make it capable of lifting what you want which would be an awsome mod hehe
 
I certainly hope not! It would produce some ridiculous situations in MP, imagine sneaking behind a player: you start shaking him violently while he has no clue what's going on until you toss him out the window like an old chair. Hey wait a minute... it could be fun :D
 
maybe u can only use it to move everything but players.... in the techdemo he uses it to throw a dead body around.. that maybe possible in mp.. i think
 
it would be fun but i doubt you will be able to shake other players or NPC's ;)

I bet you can, i read somewhere about someone asking if you can put a player in a dumpster and hurl it away with the player in it, i think the answer was a sort of a yes from gade.

i hope its in there hehe :D

even if its only available in SP it will be an easy task to make it work in MP aswell but it depends how well it will work on "living" persons with that i mean human controlled characters :)

I think your thinking of the e-mail where Gabe talked about the manipulators from the game and that demo and said only one of those would be in the single player, he didn't say anything about it not being in multiplayer.
 
As a mod I'm sure its fairly simple to program how much weight it can pick up. I remember seeing in the tech demo that a nondescript ragdoll was picked up with the manipulator to show off the physics interactions. I would think this could easily be programmed to affect moving entities as well. But like someone else on here mentioned, it would get really annoying kinda like force grip in JK. I would think it'd be cool to work kinda like a close-quarters situation similar to a knife. Its only effective when you're practically right up against another player, so your skills as a quick-reflex player come into account. It'd be hilarious to pick up someone else in multiplayer by their foot and have them dangling around in the air, all the while trying to shoot at you in a spinning fashion.
 
I don't think the manipulator would be as rediculous as force grip in JO was...for one thing the manipulator doesn't do damage when you pick things up. And I don't think in HL2 there will be bottomless pits all over the place :D

I'm pretty sure people are lighter than ovens.
 
If it was in multiplayer, to balance and make the game fair it would need to have a time constraint (eg. stop after 5 seconds) and option for servers (eg. Manipulator - No) and a weight constraint (eg. can't pick up cars (too heavy))
 
Force grip in JK2 was for lamers who were too retarded to use the sabre.

You forgot to mention the simplest solution: just like in Halflife DM, the vacuum laser thingamajig was well hidden in maps. They could hide it in obscure areas of the map, or hard to reach zones necessitating wild jumps etc...

sure but as someone is grabing you with the manip you just shoot them in the gut a few times with your USP. then of course they die and you fall to your death.

What if you can use the Manipulator on people for only a short while... yanno, just enough to push them around a bit, but not enough to actually pick them up and throw them 50 feet. Maybe it was designed only to work on inanimate objects because living things would wiggle and squirm too much for the manipulator to get a good grip on them.
 
Wait! i have a theory. I bet you will be able to pick someone up with the manipulator, BUT if they shoot you it stops the beam. This would definitly be good, because it would still put the manipulator to use and reduce manipulator whores at the same time.
 
I don't think Manipulator would work in MP. Look how crappy JKO turned out because of force grip. Ever grip someone the same time they grip you? You both can make eachother fly.. then you both die!
 
you fall to the manip gun, then you die a fraction of a second later ;)

Yes that's a perfect idea for implementing it, sneakin up and people and throwing them before they turn and shoot you turning off your hold is perfect.

Oh and that was me who mailed Gabe about putting someone in a dumpster and hurling them 100 yards. He said that's the typa playing that makes people cry or something...

didnt u guys hear from gabe, he said that there is a weight restriction, although he said its a system built on rules, the rules of a computer, some can be bent bent other can be broken, exp. get the console and type code in to change the physics of the manipulator and viola. there u have it... jeez(read EVERYTHING and u would o known this) huh.jk
