The technology all by itself is a great thing, although I doubt its really all that effective yet. You can attach as many scary implementations as you like, but it probably is just gonna be a cool toy for a long while.

I imagine they patented it because their R&D department invented it. Thats how patenting stuff works.
(The other scenario is that a private inventor made it, and Sony made him a very, very rich man for the patent rights. Still not evil.)
