The Meat Industry

I watch videos like these and they don't convince me to be a vegetarian. They just reinforce my beliefs that animals should be given good lives before they are humanely slaughtered for our food.

When you handle things in such bulk, which is what meat has become in the united states and other parts of the world... that's when things start to become monstrous.

I agree the stuff in videos such as this is disgusting, but I'm fortunate to be living in a smaller country where we know what happens to our animals. I'll never be a vegetarian but this is definately an issue.

Yes, people are ****ed, but humans are omnivores, end of story.

OP is a spambot (most likely). I wouldn't put it past them veggies.

I like meat a lot, but lately I've become much more attached to vegitables.

I enjoy eating meat because it makes me feel like a hungry zombie, or a mad gorilla tearing a man apart and eating him, especially when I eat things like chicken wings, so sloppy and messy.

I love vegetables and meat equally.

The key to any sandwich of mine loaded with meats... is a mountain of delicious lettuce. Romaine is more nutritous but I love iceburg as well.

Poor old chickens. I used to have a pet chicken and it was one of the coolest pets I've ever had. With that said, I feel like a dick for laughing at that dude tossing a whole bag of chickens into that little slot at 1:48. How the hell did he land all those chickens in the slot? Anyway, I probably won't become a vegetarian from this, but it does open my eyes a bit.

I am not a spammer, I am just the same as you. A Half-Life fan posting off topic in the lounge forum.

I do not think that eating meat is bad and it does taste good. However, Raziaar and Sneaki are correct. Mass producing, factory farming, meat is what causes this inhumane treatment.

I think Americans eat too much meat. Americans eat almost everything in excess. (I am from America). Fruits and vegetables have many benefits. They help give you clear skin, they have many vitamins and nutrients. And for people that exercise as I do, veggies are a clean efficient fuel for your body to run on. Meat should be part of a meal, not THE meal. Do you ever notice how everything is STEAK burrito or BEEF sandwich or CHICKEN salad?

Also, while it is true that we can obviously eat meat. It is perfectly possible to be healthy and strong as a vegetarian or vegan (If not more so).

http://www.veganbodybuilding.com/

I am also not trying to get you to become vegetarian. Just be informed of this and consider buying locally and consider checking where your food comes from (you ARE eating it). Once again, I am not saying that eating meat is bad. I will eat meat if I know if was free farmed and killed humanely. Do as you will, I will not support this industry.

With 5 posts and a name "AAA" you don't strike me as someone who actually cares much about Half-Life or the HelpLife2.net community.

You sound to me like someone from PETA trying to spam everyone into vegetarian submission.

I've seen some of the PETA videos on KFC. They don't make me a vegetarian, they just make me stop eating KFCs. Which I hate them for. I like KFC and their delicious skin...

Bastards

Edit:

I do not think that eating meat is bad and it does taste good. However, Raziaar and Sneaki are correct. Mass producing, factory farming, meat is what causes this inhumane treatment.

How the hell do you think eating vegetables is going to stop this? They're just going to mass produce vegetables! Think of the conditions they'll be forced to live in!

I think Americans eat too much meat. Americans eat almost everything in excess. (I am from America).

Ever thought that lions eat too much meat? Or tigers? Or any other animal? Because that's what we are. If our natural instinct is to eat meat, I'm not going to stop.

Fruits and vegetables have many benefits. They help give you clear skin, they have many vitamins and nutrients.

Carrots help you see in the dark!

And for people that exercise as I do, veggies are a clean efficient fuel for your body to run on. Meat should be part of a meal, not THE meal.

You just contradicted yourself. So we only have to eat vegetables to excercise, but meat should still be a part of the meal?
I don't think many people just eat meat, and if they do, why stop them? I certainly haven't ever stopped anyone from being a vegetarian!

Do you ever notice how everything is STEAK burrito or BEEF sandwich or CHICKEN salad?

Do you ever notice how everything is steak BURRITO or beef SANDWICH or chicken SALAD?
Too much damn vegetables in our food!

killed humanely.

this is hilarious.

I hate videos like that.

Always promote oneside of the story.

Yes battery farming is disgraceful. and if i could afford organic freerange i would.

But as a poor ass student there is no chance in hell im paying for it.

Tho i do eat lots of veg too. It a balanced diet. u need protien meat is easy protein

With 5 posts and a name "AAA" you don't strike me as someone who actually cares much about Half-Life or the HelpLife2.net community.

AAA comes from my days of console gaming when I didn't feel like putting in KSA (my initials) for high scores, and I do care about Half-Life and the community. I only have 5 posts because I just read everyone else's stuff as a guest for long time before actually joining the forums. (I'm quite familiar with you, Druckles, and your malicious responses to a lot of posts and the fact that you were banned for a while). I then decided to join to ask a question about giving my extra copies of HL2 and EP1 to a friend (since I bought the orange box which came with them): http://halflife2.net/forums/showthread.php?t=138445

How the hell do you think eating vegetables is going to stop this? They're just going to mass produce vegetables! Think of the conditions they'll be forced to live in!

I didn't say that eating vegetables is going to stop this. I said that meat should be free farmed and not mass produced in factories like some kind of textile. All the meat industry right now is worried about is maximizing profits while minimized costs.

Ever thought that lions eat too much meat? Or tigers? Or any other animal? Because that's what we are. If our natural instinct is to eat meat, I'm not going to stop.

Yes, we can eat meat, and you go right on ahead eating it.

You just contradicted yourself. So we only have to eat vegetables to excercise, but meat should still be a part of the meal?

I said that vegetables are an efficient fuel for exercise and that it is possible to be healthy as a vegetarian. I didn't say "we only have to eat vegetables to exercise". Protein is good to eat AFTER you exercise (and meat can be one of the sources of protein), vegetables are good to eat BEFORE you exercise. It's called timing and moderation. Ask any nutritionist. Sorry for not clarifying that.

I don't think many people just eat meat, and if they do, why stop them? I certainly haven't ever stopped anyone from being a vegetarian!

I don't think many people just eat meat either. I said that Americans (and perhaps other countries - I don't know because I don't live in other countries) eat too much meat. If the demand for meat went down, perhaps in combination with a new industry (like mass free farming or something) then that would help alleviate this problem. Like I said before, I am not trying to get you to become a vegetarian.

killed humanely.

As in a gun to the head or lethal injection. Would you rather have a gun to the head or be hung upside down on a chain and then have your throat slit? Not to mention the animals are tormented throughout their lives, so I guess the dieing is the best part.

Do as you will, I will not support this industry.

ONCE AGAIN, do as you will. I only wanted to know what you all thought about this, not some troll biting my ass.

This thread made me hungry.
Hungry for WEEEEERMS?
No, hungry for WEEEEEEEEEEEERMS.

Don't do it. Turn back while you still can.

I've been a vegetarian for six years, and it really sucks and I wish I could eat meat again but I just can't. I can't make myself do it.

Go for buying locally-produced, free range meat instead. As long as you eat in moderation, it's healthier than being a vegetarian and you'll be supporting local farmers as well. WIN-WIN, MY FRIEND.

I'm all for buying locally, but besides that I've decided to steer clear.

"...millions of compassionate people have decided to leave meat off their plates for good."
Subtext: if you eat meat, you are a complete bastard of the highest order.

I have no problem with vegetarians (some of my best friends, etc.), but it's the smug, holier-than-thou arseholes who consider themselves in some way better people because they don't eat meat that I simply cannot abide.

Videos like this show off the horror stories but really there's a lot of humane treatment of animals bred for food that they carefully omit.

There was a program on BBC 3 recently called, rather bluntly, "Kill It, Cook It, Eat It".
In this program, they had a small studio built onto the side of a fully-functioning abattoir.
The audience (comprised of meat-eaters, vegetarians, vegans, all sorts - the farmers of the livestock about to be slaughtered were also present) watched the complete process of slaughtering an animal (it ran for five days and each day they showed what the process was with different animals) from beginning to end.
It focussed specifically on young animals like lamb, veal, suckling pig etc. as that's an even more contentious issue than usual livestock.
Then a butcher explained various cuts and meat standards etc., then a chef cooked it into some dish or other and the audience (if they wanted to) had a bite to eat. Then they debated about the morality/lack thereof of eating that type of meat.

Personally I felt it was actually done extremely well - it was candid without being sensationalist (a balance which could have been very easy to miss), which meant that it felt pretty even-handed.

The process itself was unpleasant. As these were younger animals, they didn't employ the metal-bolt-to-the-brain approach. Instead, they were stunned with an electric shock, hung up and their throats were slit and they were bled.
Like I said, this in itself is unpleasant, but as the animals were completely unconscious (and there are rigorous standards imposed on abattoirs to make sure their equipment does so) they could did not feel anything before they died.
I felt that, in that respect at least, meat isn't cruel.

Battery farming is of course a different matter, however I think the laws in Britain are fairly tough.

I'm quite familiar with you, Druckles, and your malicious responses to a lot of posts and the fact that you were banned for a while

Oh shit, he knows me! :O

"A lot of" is a grave exaggeration. As is "malicious". You might call it constructive criticism. Ignorance of ignorance should be dealt with swiftly.

I then decided to join to ask a question about giving my extra copies of HL2 and EP1 to a friend (since I bought the orange box which came with them): http://halflife2.net/forums/showthread.php?t=138445

Hm... I thought I'd commented in that thread. Yes, I read the thread, however there are certain actions in posting new threads which are inevitably going to lead to criticism. Posting one of these topics is such an example. You sound like PETA. We're all already aware of the things behind the meat industry and all feel really sorry, however there are a lot of people that are unable to do anything about it. Funnily enough, most of the people here fall under that category.

Such people include students, who are unable to afford the extra cost that comes with free range animals. Children, who are unable to purchase their own food as they're under the strong arm of their parents, and people who live in poverty.

While I couldn't say that anyone here except Darkseid falls under the last category, most people bar some are one or the other of the first two categories, unable to make a damned bit of difference to the world. You can scream all you want about how they can talk to their parents, or spend that extra cent/penny, but they can't do anything. My own mother bought caged hen's eggs, and nothing I could do could stop her. Despite being a Christian, her response was "I don't care about animals". Funny, that...

So there's little point in preaching here. The story's gone around enough already, and we don't want anyone else making us feel anymore guilty than we do.

If you want to make a difference, why don't you? Why don't you actually do something to change the world and speak to the companies themselves, or ask us something reasonable, not just show us something we've all seen millions of times. If you say that eating meat is fine, then be clear about that in your first post. If you say that a lot of people eat meat, be clear about the fact that you don't mean that, because you keep contradicting yourself.

There is no form of humane killing. Animals in the wild will constantly devour creatures, ripping their throats out. And if you ask "which would I prefer?" I'd certainly not like to have my throat ripped out, or even be mauled by a lion.

I'd not like to have my head chopped off either, but then apparently that's humane. And as to putting a bullet through my head... no, that's probably one of the last ways I'd like to die, so that's not going to get to me.

ONCE AGAIN, do as you will. I only wanted to know what you all thought about this, not some troll biting my ass.

I've been doing as I will for the past year, and I'm quite happy with it, thank you.

If you wanted to know what we thought, you should have been clear in the first place. You simply said "I am now a vegetarian" and "It's horrifying". Neither said anything about "thoughts" or "thinking".

Google - define: troll

Definitions of troll on the web: said:
  • a race of giants. They appear in various Northern mythologies. In Norse mythology Trolls are represented as a type of goblin.
  • To deliberately post false or controversial messages to gain attention for the sake of attention, usually from people who genuinely want to help. The act of posting false messages is called trolling.
  • A troll is a user of a newsgroup, forum or message board that posts messages with the intent of inciting an argument or flame-war.

I can assure you that I am not a member of any race of giants, and my posts were not intended to gain attention, and I certainly don't want you to argue back at me. And I don't think I'd put so much time and effort into my posts if all I wanted was attention or a flame-war.

Your post, however, could be argued to be "trolling". You've posted a controversial thread after posting about three times previously, and seem to intend for everyone else to be a vegetarian. Try looking up definitions of words before you use them. You new people use the word "troll" an awful lot, when you've been around for less than a month, possibly even just registered, and when don't like the fact that someone disagrees with you, you just throw out the word "troll". Even if it's at a moderator.

If you wanted to know what we thought, you should have been clear in the first place. You simply said "I am now a vegetarian" and "It's horrifying". Neither said anything about "thoughts" or "thinking".

When you post something in a forum, it's kind of understood that you want to start a conversation. But, I guess I should have stated my opinions more in the original post. I'm sorry. Next time, I'll be sure to make sure everyone knows exactly what I am doing before posting and looking like a troll.

Frankly, this video just broke my heart because I love animals and I wanted to see if anyone knew anything about the situation. I guess I wanted some sort of comfort because it bothered me so much.

"If you drink milk, you are supporting this"

That's absolute bullshit, or atleast the way they phrase it is. People that drink milk don't support what they do to the cows, its just a form of calcium and people think it tastes good.

These VegiVideos wont stop me from eating meat, they just make me feel sick.

what should solve this problem is strict government regulations.
like in most EU countries. I think we can all agree on the situation in the US.

here you go you:

yup americans are now officially fat ****s and should do something about it if they want to see animals being treated better

FACT: Scared cows taste better

Oh and Jverne it's not what we eat that makes us fat, it's that we eat too much. I blame weed and mcdonalds dollar menu.

umm...yea, that's what i meant all along. US in average eats too much.

i feel so proud that our local McDonalds went bankrupt due to few visitors.
like i said, our other local fast foods make much better and healthier burgers quite affordable if you don't eat them too often.

Not really around here. We still have taco bell, wendys, burger king, arbys...well every fast food chain pretty much. They are all pretty bad for you but just too delicious. <3 rodeo burgers from BK.

I came across this video today and it is absolutely horrifying!

I have considered becoming a vegetarian for a while now and I this has finally convinced me.

Maybe if we make lions in africa watch themselves on television eating animals alive they will change to?

Maybe if we make lions in africa watch themselves on television eating animals alive they will change to?

So you're saying that we, as animals can inhumanely treat other animals simply because we want to eat (a lot of) them? Does that mean we can poo and pee anywhere we please, **** our family members, eat our young and kill each other?

Also, There's a difference between living in the wild and living in an animal Auschwitz. The animals in the video can't do anything except exist and are tormented by their raisers.

By posting this I was trying to see if maybe someone knew about this and if something could be done about it. I wanted to see what everyone's opinions were. (I can't really contact CEOs of these corporations and expect something to happen).

Step 1. Join hippy group.
Step 2. Plan legal demonstrations.
Step 3. Gather are much media attention as possible.
Step 4. Execute demonstration.
Step 5. Don't look like a dick. (You're doing a good job of failing this step right now and you haven't even started step 1.)
Step 6. Profit.

Also, There's a difference between living in the wild and living in an animal Auschwitz. The animals in the video can't do anything except exist and are tormented by their raisers.

Remember step 5? Yes some workers are complete and utter arse hats, but it comes with the territory working in the animal industry is some of the worst and most stressful work around. Get this through your thick skull before labelling people like myself who've been in the industry. WE DO NOT HAVE A CHOICE. You either listen to your bosses orders or get sacked, plain and simple.

Frankly, this video just broke my heart because I love animals and I wanted to see if anyone knew anything about the situation. I guess I wanted some sort of comfort because it bothered me so much.

You're lucky I'm going easy on you. At least try and see the others sides view of things before ranting on about how cruel animal keepers are.

Good luck being a true vegetarian and traveling anywhere. All of the roads you drive on contain beef tallow.

Get this through your thick skull before labelling people like myself who've been in the industry.

I'm sorry if I labeled you or anyone else in the industry. If I could find where I said this, I would know what not to do again.

WE DO NOT HAVE A CHOICE.

I know people don't have any control over their job descriptions or the demands of their superiors, but they chose the job. I don't know anyone's circumstances that drove them to work in the meat industry; I hope that no one is forced to work in it. If that is the case, we have a whole new problem on our hands. A problem I thought we got rid of with the whole emancipation proclamation thing.

Step 1. Join hippy group.

To be so offended by labeling you seem to be quick to label others. I hope you don't think that all people supporting animal rights are hippies.
