The MechWarrior 4 Free Release is finally here!

**** YES!

I've been waiting for this forever. I lost my MW4 discs years and years ago. I'm also done with exams by this time next week, which means HL2NET MECHWARRIOR GAMES \o/

Dude, I used to LOVE this game. Certainly will want to pick this up :D

Only a full year later... Nice work Microsoft.

Too bad it has to use the MTX program, such a horrid piece of software.

Never played it, worth a download?

Definitely, if you've never played a Mechwarrior game you're in for a treat.

You can say that again, I've been struggling with this piece of shit all day. Almost done downloading though :D

Glad this finally came out, I heard they ran into some trouble but now it's out at least, MW/BattleTech has a special place in my heart.

*Hugs collection of every BattleTech-based commercial video/computer-game ever made*

Thanks, vikram.

Couldn't even tell if the MTX program was even ****ing downloading the damn game or not and I've had it running since last night.

Christ, why would they use this thing?

MTX is pretty notoriously buggy, but it's been out for about 6 weeks so they're still working on it. I play MW4 now and again, but I haven't played it in the last couple weeks since I've been too busy to just sit down and get my game on. If you guys see a server called "Maestro's Madhouse" then join, I should have my router set up to work with MW4 once I get around to playing again.

Remember, though, you will need many, many maps. The NBT-CDs are the most convenient way to get them. I also recommend the Mechstorm Mercenaries Co-op since that's what my server will be about.

It doesn't seem so.

The torrent files are .mtx files and even with those I can't get it working because MTX needs to connect to their site. I tried putting the files into the temp directory and opening with MTX, but nothing appears in Games Available.

Dumb idea to even invent this MTX thing. Is anyone who's downloading MW4 going to be so retarded that they can't download a patch the usual way?

I think the load is killing their server, probably why no one can get a connect. The torrent might still work, but you'll need an alternative program to torrent it.

I never played Mech Warrior but I did play Earth siege back in the day:

Back in 1998 I only played the Doom demo multiple times, a 3-1/2" disc with "Troubles with Tribbles" and Earth Siege. Man I used to pwn so hard in that game. I would put a plasma cannon on it and one shot own anything. The final level had you in a plane assaulting a moon base. You could also put the plasma cannon on the plane so you would dive bomb the base. Plus there was a old tough guy:

Yeah...nothing like MW4. MW4 is awesome though.

I played Starsiege in the 90s which is essentially the sequel to Earthsiege 2. I miss that game. MW is way better though.

So, um, has anybody actually been able to play this yet?

Also, **** yeah Starsiege was the shit.

HERCs 4 life

The spin-off strategy games based off the "Siege" universe were also great, Cyberstorm 1 and 2, if anyone here played'em.

I played the shit out of MW3 and only started MW4...

It'll be nice to play it again.. even though it won't download for me. Maybe in some time...

Lemme guess...too arcade-like? I disdain your purism.

Nope, it's just that it was the first BattleTech computer-game I ever played, so it has a very special place in my heart, y'know? Like nostalgia shit.

I just noticed Earth Siege... I really liked Star Siege... it had an interesting story and decent gameplay... but that was a long time ago.

I have a copy of MW2 I've never played. It's the original DOS3.1/95 and it won't work on my XP machine.

I just installed this MTX thing, got the actual game downloading from easynews, 1.1mb/s.

This better be worth it...

I'm going to make a recommendation for anyone thinking about getting this with MTX.

Just. ****ing. Don't.

I'd rather be buggered to death than waste another hour like that again.

They have fixed a critical error in the MTX architecture where you need to connect to the MekTek server. The server went down with the spike in traffic, so too did MTX. That isn't a problem anymore, they're also releasing a patch for those that wish to skip MTX until they work the kinks out.

Is this game really worth the effort?

EDIT: Downloading it now.

I'm really, really impressed with the MekTek team. They patched an offline mode into MTX (Download Link) and made it snappier within days, i.e. listened to the fans. And the intentions behind MTX are admirable (to keep the game patched and prevent community fragmentation, adding support for new hardware etc.) Let's hope a healthy community grows around this in the coming months.

I'm convinced that there's going to be a new Mech game eventually, why else would they resuscitate the franchise? :D

I am able to run the old DOS versions using DOSBox(Requires a quite good computer though)

I have never seen a more patient and capable mod group anywhere. Up until the rights were given they had to work without any access to source codes, it was all workarounds and jury-rigging until July last year. MP4 is going to kick some ass.

I don't know how many people will join the community, but when I get shit sorted out I'm going to work on starting a dedicated server for MW4 to help teach new pilots.

I think it's got the potential to be a lot bigger than it was after it was released. Cuz, you know, it's free. And everybody has a computer that can run it. Just got to get it all out there in the public's eye and whatnot. This game is sick. I can't wait to try out the campaign with all the mekpak mechs and weapons. Not looking forward to the dialogue though, but that's always been a problem with the Mech4 games.

So have enough people gotten it to actually download it now or am I still going to be uploading more than I download when I have like 2mb downloaded?

The installer still doesn't work properly. Keeps asking me for disk 2, won't update.

GAY.

Game Maker Switches to BitTorrent After Server Crash

The new release of MechWarrior 4 has crashed the game maker’s distribution servers. The central distribution server collapsed last weekend when tens of thousands of people attempted to download the free game. To distribute the game to the public effectively and without issues, the game’s makers will now switch to BitTorrent exclusively.
Sorry, I didn't think to post this before.
Update: MekTek already used BitTorrent in it’s original release. MTX was capable of using both http and BitTorrent, but the buggy system collapsed. They now have switched to BitTorrent only.
