The modding community contradiction

Well... I didn't want to post in the "Renegade X: Dead 6" help wanted thread because I didn't want to derail it, but well... it got me thinking about the modding community in general nowadays. I remember before like in the Duke Nukem 3D or Quake 1 days, people would get together enthusiastically and try to slap some stuff together in their spare time, knowing that people would want to try out their mod and have fun with it. Nowadays, most people hold such a high standard of themselves when looking at the "help wanted" posts, such that they would never want to associate themselves with a "fly-by night amateur project".

Where the hell are the people who are passionate about making mods because they like making something that is fun, rather than trying to prove their "street cred"? Are the only mods that are even looked at as being "successful" are the ones which are filled with "amateur mod professionals" (however contradictory that sounds)? I know that others would never want to join a mod lead by an "idea" person, but it seems to also apply to those who haven't made any game content for 4 years straight as well.

Right here, buddy. I ain't making myself out to be a "pro", because quite frankly I could care less about people who take themselves too seriously.
These "Fancy Lads" as I like to call em, or at least some of them, don't know any other way to gather respect, and really deserve your pity rather than your ire.

My 2 cents.

I have a strong background in the formula of what I'm doing. Using this particular medium is new. Of course, I'll take anyone as long they can learn the tools and produce what we need.

Only reason that i posted the way that i have, is that you would not believe the amount of people that have applied for the mod as a 3d artist, or texture artist and whatnot, and don't even know the basics of there hobby.

And when i did say "professional", i meant someone who either has professional experience (as most of our team does), or someone who very experienced with what they are doing, i.e. done quite a bit of mods etc...

As far as "street cred" or whatnot, i have released to my community over 30 applications, multiple game mods, and other gaming services. Ask anyone who has worked with me, or even knows me, i do what i am doing right, and like it that way, so asking for people who do it the same shouldn't be that bad of a request i think.

its not so much that, its more that people take modding too seriously nowadays. It just seems that mods aren't created cuz some guys goes, ooooo that sounds like fun, ill post my vague idea and see if people like it. Only mod i can think that has done that recently is the dooples mod on hl2w0rld.

I think it boils down to the fact that you used to be able to put together a mod without a lot of skill and still have it turn out just as good (graphics as well as gameplay) as the original game (sometimes better) but now if a mod team wants to make content that stacks up with what people expect from games these days, they need to behave in a more professional manner, or they'd never get anything done. I'd imagine there are still plenty of amateur modders who are toiling away at some awesome idea or another in their spare time, but they probably aren't organized enough to tell everyone about it just yet. Hopefully the more modders who exist on a quasi-professional level, the more able the community will be able to support the inexperience n00b with an awesome idea.

That's fine if you ask me... the thing I was a bit critical about was the person who responded right after you about you guys being the only mod that they should join since you guys actually knew what you guys were doing, and not some "amateur fly-by night" project. THAT was exactly what I found so oxymoronic, since mods are supposed to be amateur projects in the first place, not pre-professional projects to get yourself into the industry.
