The new Consoles, will they snuff out PC gaming?

how many revolutionary games are coming out for the consoles, I see Splinter Cell 3, Fable, and Halo 2 (im not gonna count PC and Console Ports)

And what, pray tell, is revolutionary about SC3 or Halo 2?

Games are getting more and more complex. You will need higher polycounts, larger textures, normal maps, specular maps, shaders, fancy lighting/shadows, and a good physics engine... just to meet the standards. You won't see anymore awesome games made by one person anymore. Teams of 20+ are starting to take years to develop top quality games.

it doesn't have to be cutting edge. As long as someone is willing to make a simple game in thier bedroom alone, PC gaming will carry one.

Yes, and after a year PCs will have already eclipsed them. Consoles are static, PCs get faster and better every year. Case closed.

Thats it really. Consoles are a snapshot in time. You fork out get a few games (which are uber priced) and play. They are great for that.

PCs evolve. If the PC market was gonna die it would of done so already, and such big name companies as Id and Valve would be jumping ship. They're still around, we're still around.

I personally don't think the PC market will ever die, it may go lower budget than the Xbox and co but thats understandable. However the humble PC always produces stuff that keeps its alive. SS2, Deus Ex, Champ Man, the list goes on. Stuff like that comes across second best on consoles.

That said Consoles have there uses. They're easy to use, fun to play, the games in general are more simplistic but less immersive. All in all a good time.

Guys in my previous post I talked about having like making mods and such on console. Well talk about ironic as today Digital Extreme announced that with the Xbox version of the game Pariah, there will be a Map editor called MAP (Map and Play)... Now this is exactly what I was talking about! They realize that the console is simply a cheap PC and they are utilizing that!

http://www.fappin.com/news/news_small.asp?Number=8526

That was ironic and not expected, but wow it fits with my post perfectly :D :D :D

*edit* Oh and of course PC's get the UnrealEd tools and MAP editor ;) But hey, at least the console genre is taking a step in the right direction!

Oh and one other reason which I love about consoles, is that you only have to upgrade like once every 4 years and you really don't have to worry about if it will run on your system or not! :D

Oh believe it or not, I'm definetely more of a PC Gamer although it is very hard to show :p

You do realise that Timesplitters, a game that has been out on the PS2 for four years, has a map maker as well? :p It's nothing to get excited over.

One thing i really like about my PC is that i can still, after all this time, play lemmings. Ok so the PS2 was backwards compatible but apart from that consoles a pain because to play the old games you have to have the old console.

Consoles are purely designed to be picked up for 1 hour and then put down again, that is it and games are designed around that principal. Pc games will always be more powerful and will always have the more engrossing games, generally.

Too be honest, consoles are for children and people interested in not really gaming seriously, serious gamers play pcs.

PC quality goes through a boom and bust cycle. Every time a console comes out, the console wil have better hardware and the same/ better games. Within about a year, PCs and PC games will have surpassed the consoles, and that is why a new 'generation' of consoles is released ever 4-5 years. One of the major attractions to PCs as hardware is they are selectively upgradeable. You can leave it the same (yeah right), upgrade processors, video cards, monitors, sound cards, sound systems, etc. individually or all together. The only upgrading you can do to consoles voids their warranty or is illegal.

And Razor, you know there are exceptions to that. There are people who play console games for MUCH more than an hour at a time, and spend more time with a console than many PC people spend on their computer. But like I said, they're an exception, not the rule.

The only reason I ever buy a console is for games that are for one specific console and get awards like "best game of such a year". That is why I own a gamecube and N64.

/me waits patiently for the new Zelda game on gamecube.

Yes, there are definately exceptions to that game, such as Final Fantasy, etc. But i think a lot of the console games are designed for ease of use and to be simple for all age groups, i have found pc games to be more engrossing, more complex and more involved in playing, which is what i prefer.

Perhaps the most complex and engrossing game that I have ever seen was made for the XBox. It was $200 because it came with a huge dual-joystick game pad with tons of buttons, switches, levers, and three pedals that all had different uses in the game. It was a mech simulation called Steel Battalion:

What a load of complete and utter bollox ......

//edit ...... which any 'serious' gamer would understand full well.

Just because they tend to be less complex than PC games doesn't make them for people aren't interested in taking gaming seriously.

Answer: No.

PC gaming will always be superior to consoles, hands-down.

If only there were the games to back this statement up. When titles as average as CoD or Max Payne 2 get hailed as great, you know the pc is in a serious decent game drought - and has been for quite a while.

(check out any 'greatest pc games ever' thread. All the titles mentioned are usually years old. In recent times the pc hasn't been the format of choice for gamers who want original, creative and innovative video games)

Hopefully HL2 and Doom 3 can change this trend.

(online play is its saving grace - and the only area the pc flourishes, imo)

CoD is super fun, it's on the Q3 engine but who cares, it's still super fun. I found it much more fun than Max Payne 2.

Don't be dissing COD. :D

PS. Online the only thing going for it? What about Radeon X800, Audigy ZS, EAX, superior graphics, Antialiasing, MODS, tweaks, multi-tasking, instant saves, no memory cards, less pricey, ...

Jesus, I could go on, consoles can't stack up against PCs.

hehe - i aint dissing CoD. It's a good, fun game.

But compared to something like Metroid Prime, it's a pile of unimaginative wank :) Not that there's anything wrong with that.

My point is - that it's been along time since we've had games the quality of HL, Baldur's Gate etc

Yah, that is true. Metroid Prime is very fun (though no multiplayer) :( . The reason to get consoles are to get exclusive games.

And don't get me wrong, consoles are excellent for renting games, playing instantly, no crashing, etc.

See this is why I find it so hard to have a nice expensive computer, sure it runs the games all nice, but when there isn't that many good games I have no problem getting a Console. My parents thought I was crazy to get a console too, oh well. I am having fun with my Gamecube.

console = pc with less versatility and no OS to work-around.
thus, console <> PC
it's that simple
there will be both for as long as you and I live

Personally, I think both will die out some day (might be sooner then we all think) because some company is going to get the ingenious idea to merge the two, and make them like the center of peoples houses. Controlling everything from temperature to the locks on the doors. All the phones would run through it, and different ports would be in every major room in the house (the office, living room, bedrooms, kitchen... actually thats all the rooms, cept the closets). I think the idea of ceperate OSs are going to die out. The two major ones are Mac Os and Windows. And look at wich one has the higher population. The unstable and crappy one. I just hope bill gates gets shot one day and then the microsoft corp will colapse, then real gaming and shit can happen, so I dont have to re-install windows every time some jerkoff plants a torjan and deletes a few Win32 files.

Dead horse.. what you mention sounds cool.. but if I somehow manage to hack into your houses system, youre screwed, i can lock you inside your house, make long distance fone calls, mess all your files, and probably burn your house down... heheh, just kidding.. why would i ever do that  hehehe

but serously, i dont see computer gaming dieing any time soon,, cus only with PC's can you instantly bitch aout you horrible/wondefull game you just had!... and have forums and stuff... i 'm not completely sure.. but i don't see any console game with a forum as active as this one, or doom or any other good PC game...

well im off to hack into Dead HOrses house... HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!.. o wait.. its still 2004... DAM!

actually I'm pritty sure that if farcry had come out on the Xbox only we'd be hereing all the usual gubbins about how its the next big thing in gaming.

I thin farcry fell victim to timing. It came out when everyone is waiting for the big 2, DooM3 and HL2. Everyone is playing it in the mindset 'Doom/hl2 will be better.' while this may be true it does put farcry up against the wall as it were.

I don't think so, an average game is an average game, regardless of the platform.
