The Next Big Thing

I was wondering. With the 3 big fps games of this past year really pushing the envelope of physics, lighting, and texturing, what do you think the next big thing, or the next push in graphical advancement will be? Just curious to see everyone's opinions.

You should Stalker and Battlefield 2 both look like very good games comming out this year

What is Radient AI if i might ask?

Radiant AI is being developed by Bethesda in the next installment of The Elder Scrolls series Oblivion.

Oblivion features a groundbreaking new AI system, called Radiant AI, which gives non-player characters (NPCs) the ability to make their own choices based on the world around them. They'll decide where to eat or who to talk to and what they'll say.

They'll sleep, go to church, and even steal items, all based on their individual characteristics. Full facial animations and lip-synching, combined with full speech for all dialog, allows NPCs to come to life like never before."

thats really cool. i was hoping that the next big thing would be to create some sort of fire wall protection so people cant install horrible horrible games like Breed. Anybody play that??

They can even make up there own style quests.
Lets say the decide to go a new town or something.
They get robbed on the way. The person might ask you to go find the items without any scripting.

Some of the coolest things in the world ^_^
I can only imagine what they will do after Oblivion. Very complex non scripted quests... :). A world where NPC's can build, destory, plant, birth...everything. That would be......insane...

Being able to see my characters legs / feet...they still can't seem to pull that one off.

One good thing about halo 2, is you can see your legs when you look down. ^_^

And you can see your legs AND arms in Operation Flashpoint, not that anyone here plays that...

I play operation flashpoint :)

F.E.A.R. is a game i am looking forward to.

Cheers,
bbyybb.

lol, don't go clumping everyone into a single category. Not that i've played OF for ages.

I am looking forward to games with the focus, quality, and excitement of Halflife2; yet with branching path story lines like KOTOR. Most importantly, the ability for people (friends) to cooperatively play seperate roles in this story, criss-cross paths and effect each others individual storylines.(World Of Warcraft) All of this in a super immersive FPS format.

When AI can out think me rather than brute force me, ill be happy.

That's when we should all run away and kill all technology :p

Sounds like hype-speak to me. I'll believe it when I see it.

Spugmaster - play Thief 3, it's got a body system thing that they mention a couple of times. Your character model is actually in the world, and if you move your head to the left/right you can see your arms, and down you can see your legs. You can also see your arms/legs get stuck on objects and they interact with the world and your other weapons fully.

So yes, they have actually pulled it off, it just seems that most companies don't bother because it's fairly pointless.

Scary!!! what if the a.i suddenly jumps out of da comp an suddenly we have the gman appearing all over the world offering us to jump into hes portal

I'm really looking forward to Unreal 3. It seems to have the best of Half-Life 2 (Texture Quality/Physics), Doom 3 (Lighting, but it's soft shadows, not stencil, so even better) and Stalker/Far Cry (More open enviorments)

Just my opinion.

They did a GREAT job of this in Riddick. (Escape from butcher bay.)

Liquid dynamics, better physics (not that i have any complaints) which means adding aerodynamics elastic objects (real ones) and stuff like that, true shaddows that blur correctly according to the location of the light source, more parralax mapping.

That's enough for graphics (high hopes, i know)

Now for gameplay I have only one 'request' and that's AI with learning abillity, which means that they will study your fighting style, personallity, and stuff like that and adjust their actions accordingly.

Oh and for half-life 2 to fix it's stupid shaddow system!!

I'm out

when we get to that point, the machines will already have control of the world.

I think the next wave will be heavy usage of post-process effects, such as depth of field blur, light blooms and glares, realistic motion blur, etc.

Water that actually behaves like water.

Yeah, that's what I was going to say too. It would be really cool to see water simulation implemented into an FPS game, but I don't think we'll see it any time soon

I don't know what your idea of water was, but i want to be able to put a bucket into water and be able to hold water in it and move it across a map, with the water level reducing everytime i take out a quantity. I don't care how hard that is, i want it :cat:

What an appropriate name, if I may say so.
Oh, this is called Fluid Dynamics / Hydraulics for anyone that cares. And it is BLOODY complicated. Trust me ...

The player base for OF is still fairly big. I still play it for example.

I would also like to see Radiant AI be implimented but I don't really see there being much chance of VALVe using it, do you?

Cool. Alls I know is I'd love to see it as well. I think its another key step towards the immersion of the player into a deeper sense of reality within a game, not unlike physics have done. Plus it would look pretty, and be fun to mess around with. :D

Dynamic shadows in large outdoor enviroments that actually look good. Stalker is supposed to have dynamic "soft" shadows, lets see if they can pull it off.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking.

About the real time shadows in large outdoor environment, maybe we'll see this in Quake IV? It's using the Doom 3 engine, and there are supposed to be outdoor environments.

Forget resident evil, doom 3 and even halflife
Operation Flashpoint is the most terrifying game ever
plus its really quite good and very challenging
not fun though

My hopes for the future are non linear levels and games, better ai and ever more realistic game worlds

Quake 4 all the way
+ pariah, stalker, battlefield 2, FEAR coming soon

Dice Sweeden (creators of BF1942, not BF:V) + Trauma Studios (Creators of the mod Desert Combat) = Battlefield 2.

Cannot argue with that. The game looks amazing, and BF1942 plays great. Should be a great game :)

Next big thing tech wise?

Xenon and PS3. These will up the baseline for the PC games in 2006-2007. We will begin to see Physics based animation in sports games; HDR; High poly count worlds and characters that use HW geometry instancing; high color pallettes, Shaders and more Shaders; Lots of AI and Physics in games; complex animations; Advanced lighting and shadowing (but not raytracing or anything nuts like that) that allow new game play elements and day-night cycles; And a lot of stinky games that try to be next gen but miss the boat trying to implement these features.

MS needs to create some new APIs: DX_AI and DX_Physics.

To me, STALKER looks like the next big advance in AI. Whether it will be, remains to be seen. For an online FPS, I have mixed feelings about Battlefield 2. On a good note, it looks the epitome of cool and some of the premises are great. But will it just be Counter Strike with vehicles? Who knows.

As for the fluid system, Meqon has done it. Being used in Duke Nukem: Forever later this year. Meqon is wonderful. It has the best ragdoll system I have ever seen. And it has cloth, gas and water physics. Meqon!

I want some like particle-based engines. Everything is made up of particles and act exactly as they would in the real world - gases, liquids, solids :D

Long way off though I think..

I repeat it again. MEQON! :bounce:

That radiant AI just sounds like The Sims without the control interface.

Actually wouldn't it kick ass if Sims-ish AI were applied to FPS enemies? :O

Two thoughts:

Tresspasser promised super physics and a living world. Don't get too excited until you get a chance to see Radiant AI for yourself. A game where I carry a bucket of water across a big map, losing a little bit every time it sloshes around, doesn't sound like very much fun. Point being, hydraulics sounds like a super way to plummet your FPS without contributing anything to the game experience.

Second, dozens of games introduced dozens of spiff innovations in the years since the original Half-Life, and HL1 still beats the pants off of the lot of them. Similarly, HL2 will probably pants every game to come out for the next five years. In a contest between good game design and sweet gimmicks good design wins every time.

Nods.
I don't know much about graphics or anything, but I do realise it is VERY hard to simulate fluid dynamics - I don't think it's been done at all, let alone being at the point of being put in a game.
