The official ANDROID thread!

Yeah, I downloaded the file and used Astro to install, running 2.2 now!
 
Just put 2.2 on my Desire. OMNOMNOM.
 
I've still got a few weeks or so I think till 2.2 comes for my Droid X! D:
 
So, I was playing around with my Rooted Droid, and found some new Kernals from Chevy! They finally bring CPU temp monitoring. So I thought I'd be silly and try 1.2 GHZ. Oh god, it works stable! .........Let's try 1.25.....OH **** CAN'T GET PAST THE MOTOROLA SYMBOL ON STARTUP. So I had to spend all day at work yesterday trying to fix it without going all the way back to 2.0.1. No go. Ended up going to 2.1 unrooted, and was going to go straight to 2.2 unrooted....but then I tried a friends unrooted 2.2 Droid. No fun. Too slow *Compared to my 1.1 GHZ...* and I just like Bugless Beast. So I just 2.2 rooted and did a restore. All is well!!!

Moral of the story, rooting isn't scary at all!

I <3 times like that. I hope that I'll be able to use different ROMs on my X!
 
I've been using my girlfriends Galaxy S and my HTC Desire for a few days and my god android is awesome! When I first tried the iPhone I was like "meh, fun." But with the Android I'm like a little girl screaming "OMG OMG OMG!" Every day I keep finding something awesome. Hell even my girlfriend hasn't used her laptop for 5 days, since she can do the same things with the phone.
 
Also waiting for 3 to get around to upgrading my Hero from 1.5.
 
Also waiting for me to get off my lazy ass and update my N1's ROM to CM6-RC2.

Wow, that is actually really cool. I haven't used the voice actions once, actually thought they kind of got in the way. But I didn't know how well they worked.
 
I think I'll get the Epic 4G when it's released in late August. I've been waiting for a slider phone on Android, with 4G. The samsung media hub is cool too.

I just hope it's rootable.

there is one I am using now because 2.2 still isn't out. gunna check engadget like a hawk tonight. download Vlingo Voice its just as good and Free as well!

The Epic will be rooted instantly. All Samsung Galaxy variants (Captivate, Epic, etc) are extremely easy to root. The Captivate was rooted before it was even released, and I'm pretty sure Cyanogen has created a custom ROM for it as well.

I don't care very much for keyboards anymore. I love just touchscreen devices. No keyboard necessary for me! :)

On my Droid X, Motorola added a few voice commands to the phone. I'm not sure which ones are added, but the 'call', 'navigate', and a few others work pretty well. I'm not sure if they were just implemented on Android 2.1 in general or if Motorola added them in.


Also, in unrelated news, I purchased an extended battery for my phone for $23. The official battery only adds 1 mm thickness and works with a bunch of cases still. I'm excited for this to get here already. :)
 
yeah I tried the Voice Commands while driving and they work awesome. It got me right to where I was going. Now all I need is the vent clip so Its hands free

Did you see the mod a forumumite from Android Forums did with the Tetrax XWAY and a SoundGate M2?

Here are links to both products at the cheapest prices I've found them for:

Tetrax XWAY

SoundGate M2 - For this guy, use coupon code "woot" to get it for 5$ and then 4$ shipped.

Anyway, what you do is remove the holder or something on the M2 and the XWAY clips onto it perfectly like it's a vent. It allows you to place the device anywhere you want it. Also, the only way it will hold it is if you put the little metal disc on the back of your phone, but I don't see that as a problem.

Koush, an amazing Android developer/hacker, is going to release the first ROM for the Droid X tomorrow! He cracked the recovery so you can launch and restore with a custom ROM! :D :D :D

EDIT: $10 is cheap for a holder. I want one that will play through my speakers too but thats probably asking for a lot

I just use the AUX port on my radio. Many newer radios can also play through bluetooth.
 
Well I was soon to root to install 2.2 but Three & HTC finally shipped their 2.2 update this morning and I'm updating now. At last! :D

Just got this in, looks cool. Mounting it seems like it might require a degree in rocket science but I should be able to figure it out. I'll post pictures when I have it installed.

They say they will. At the moment I'm sitting on my hands going "Oh...! Wait, no" every time I see something cool. Hell, even the IMDB app requires 1.6.

It's become a lot more noticeable recently, and 3 are being dicks about it.
 
Are you not able to root the Hero? If so, I'd assume there are custom roms with 1.6 *or whatever is newest coming out*
 
Yes. I could. I was going to at one point. I'd have to wipe my phone, and I'd rather not. I'll get around to it one day.

I'm not sure about your phone, but with the Droid, you can back up most things to Google, like your contacts and such, and when you reinstall it should sync up and redownload most of your apps...?
 
Yeah, the Hero's got Google sync, so that's not an issue. It'd be things like photos, apps, messages etc. Just a hassle, and I probably shouldn't start now when I have other things to get around to doing first.
 
Does the app 'mybackup' work on 1.5? It's got a free trial for 30 days which backs up everything you need either to their servers or your SD card (including apps). Really useful and makes starting fresh a considerably less painful process.

You can easily back up everything using an app called Titanium Backup. You have to root your phone first, then install TB, and you can back up EVERYTHING. Then you can install a custom 2.1 ROM and restoreeeeeeee. :)
 
this is really scary, I just bought that holder as mentioned and it arrived all ready. like 3 days is really fast shipping too. I usually get this fast when I spend like $20 for just the shipping
 
Yeah, they used USPS first class mail which is much faster than UPS and Fedex. I don't know why everyone doesn't ship using that or priority mail. It's cheaper too.

I did get the holder installed and I'm liking it. I'm a bit skeptical of how well the tape will hold and how durable the plastic will be. But for $10 I really can't bitch.
