I'd say it's more like a Venus-like planet, rather than Xen. Massively thick sulphur clouds. It fits with the idea of the Combine stealing the stuff of other worlds, seeing as they've gone and polluted theirs.

Beautiful, looks like mini-citadels, some spires the Combine need... there was a screen somewhere of those ground-thumpers on Xen, too, or something similar looking. It's almost certain now that Xen was under Combine control in HL1.

Oh, and I think I saw Breen's face for a moment in the portal during the last battle...

The ripple/filter effect of the portal was so poor that I simply thought valve placed a ripple effect over a really low resolution image.

If they had made the portal a little more clear it wouldn't have looked like a cheap effect...all that detail was lost.
