Okidoodle before i start my apologies, this was supposed to be posted in the 'Manhunt' thread that i started, because it's basically that, but for some reason it wouldn't let me post so i had to start a newey. Anywayz here's the basic design idea i was asked for
I've not gone for anything overly original with the story, i wanna try and keep it simple but at the same time interesting, and am perfectly willing to edit some areas depending on the ideas of others should it be taken further.
THE STORY
We're in the future (original so far?) and what we have before us is a segregated planet. Years ago it became painfully obvious to the main superpowers of the planet, that the world was truly going to shit, and something had to be done. It would be too large a task to destroy the world and start again, but that was what was basically decided. Countries were segregated into too areas, 'The heavens' and 'hell' (consider these the general slang terms used for the places).
The Heavens - not to different from our world today in terms of law and punishment, just much better. Generally without ignorance and predjudice, freedom of speach an encouraged thing, as if Louis Armstrongs 'What A Wonderful World' was the design breif to their construction. Very very little crime, a place without fear, and a perfect balance between nature and technology. (Unlike movies and games where 'the perfect world' is actually quite ironic (eg: Demolition Man), these places really are decent. No strings attached, no hidden agendas, this is fantasy afterall).
Hell - The total contrast. Oringinally it was intended that they would be prisons to the criminals of the world, but they would be far too impractical to maintain, so instead it was decided that the scummiest scum of the world would be sent there, to live in a community, just like those who lived in the heavens. Though the general 'look' and upkeep of hell was also a great contrast to that of the heavens. All the shit that had been cleaned out to make way for the Heavens, was sent to hell. Dark, cold, dangerous and falling to pieces (try and think of the surroundings as general expressions of the people living there).
Whereas the community's of the heavens were well built, good to eachother, worked together, and generally nice those of hell weren't. Rather than concentrate their hatred towards the heavens and form an army of sorts as was originally feared, they actually seemed to love where they were, and became deeply territorial. Gangs formed, some small, some huge, all fighting brutally to control turf. Wars bloodier than those of medieval times would take place. Gang members armed with chainsaws, bats, axes, anything that left a mess. The two areas, socially, and physically could not have been any more different, the one thing they heald in common though, was that their populations were much happer where they were, and wouldn't want to enter the others. Still though, the leaders of the heavens understood the curiosity, and sick interest that would be inevitable in certain areas of their population towards Hell, and so it was important to them to discourage this as much as possible, merely for the good of the people. The most powerful means of doing so was through the media, and their instrument became 'The Prey'.
The Prey was basically a TV show, used to discourage the interest of those who wished to know more about, or possibly enter Hell, but also as a way of entertaining. The lust for blood will never truly die, and through The Prey the pracital side of it'd at the very least be kept out of the Heavens. The Prey took a volenteer, or a criminal who became far too much for the Heaven's to handle, and put them in hell. Their actions would then be monitored via Satellite, the secutiry network implemented at the beginning of the segregation to keep an eye on the development of society in hell, and through actual camera crews if a group of individuals decided to try their might. The Prey is doing it's job. Although there is a huge interest and fan base in it, it's in the TV show, and not in the actual place.
Right that's the backshit out of the way, now for where the game comes in. The Player is a normal person who through a mistake or a setup ended up in The Prey, and is fighting to survive in the hope that they will escape and find a way home.
DESIGN
The mod is set in the furture because it'd obviously've taken a while to complete a task such as the segregation, but basically all the shit from the world before has been put there, so on the whole it doesn't need to look too classy or futuristic. Im aware that it'd be stupid to aim for something too complex but nevertheless i wouldn't want that to effect the quality. I'd want the source engine to be used as best we could, offering plenty of opportunities for the player to use the environment to their advantage, be it hiding, using objects to distract, or cleverly using objects big or small as weapons. On the whole think degraded but stylish, dark but interesting and believable.
WEAPONS
Mostly melee, and the few guns would be very basic, The Prey is about face to face blood sports. Talking chainsaws, axes, steel rods, it'd be cool if parts of the environment could somehow be picked up and used as weapons, not sure how that'd be done.
CHARACTERS
Not sure how many different characters/gang members there'd be, atleast 3. They'd have to look nasty, but intruiging. Some masked in kinda childish things to make it a little more disturbing. There'd have to be a degree of fear created too by the people you meet. As i've said before though if the project does begin i'm open to suggestions and ideas.
ANIMATION
This is probably one of the hardest areas, but atleast as good as morrowind... or doom 2. Just s'long as the right parts move;
GAMEPLAY
The use of design and character brutality would encourage an equal degree of stealth as it would violence and brutality.
These are some gameplay dealy's i'd like to see if possible :
fear : depending on how many enemies the player faces, or in just specific areas done by the level designers, fear would effect the acurracy of the player
adrenaline : if the player makes a number of successful kills close together they will become more dangerous for a minute or so
vehicles : it'd be ace if we could somehow include vehicles. Maybe have a big chase level where a shit load of gangsters are chasing the player through a load o skyscrapers or something. Open to suggestions once again
humour : although it's gonna be pretty sick and dark, there's rumour for humour in everything.
I haven't really thought of much more that i need to cover, cuz it's just a general thing. Like i say i don't like getting to indepth to an idea cuz i either ruin it, or it never happens. RAR!
